The Fiery Bulblax <span style="line-height:20px;">(</span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;line-height:19px;">ヤキチャッピー) </span>is an uncommon enemy found in Pikmin 2. Its body parts appear to be melting away from its body's intense heat waves, and more strangely, one of its eyes is smaller than the other. Its fiery aura is caused by the glands and oils on this creature's body that result in a chemical reaction, which causes fire to ignite on its hide. Only Red Pikmin can withstand the blaze of this creature's body. However, if lured to water, the flame will go out, making it a prime target for Blue Pikmin. If it enters water, it will try to go back to where it was it was sleeping, and will sometimes ignore any Pikmin attacking it. It is recommended to use a spray against this enemy, because it is more aggressive than other members of its family. Due to the Bulblax's curtain-esque shape, Pikmin may get stuck under its body when they carry it. If that happens, call them and try dismissing them to pick it back up. As well as sharing the name with it, the Fiery Bulblax's melted features make it resemble the Emperor Bulblax, despite being the same size and having the same attack strategy as the smaller members of the Grub-Dog species. Also, this is one of the few members of the grub-dog family without a dwarf that replicates it.
The Fiery Bulblax (ヤキチャッピー) is an uncommon enemy that appears in p2 and p4.

Notes
Fiery Bulblaxes are constantly ablaze, and appear to be melting from the extreme heat they put off, most noticeably on their faces. Red Pikmin are often the only type that can safely attack them due to their fire-resistance. However, if lured into a body of water, their flames will be temporarily extinguished, allowing all types to safely attack.

Killing Strategy
Stats
Obviously, Red Pikmin are desirable due to their resistance of the flames emitted from the Fiery Bulbax's abdomen. Defeat it as if it were a standard Red Bulborb, by peppering its back with reds. Fiery Bulblaxes have high health for a grub-dog and can sometimes attack after shaking Pikmin off. Fiery Bulblaxes can also eat Pikmin much faster than a normal Bulborb can. An Ultra-spicy Spray may be desirable for killing it effectively and without danger. Additionally, simply swarming it with a squad of 50+ red pikmin can kill it within seconds without any casualties, even without sprays, but this is best done quickly, and from the back, while the creature is sleeping.

However, sometimes a Fiery Bulblax must be fought with Blue Pikmin, such as the lone one at the Valley of Repose. To kill it here, lure it into the water. The flames on its back will go out, but it will soon realize this, turn around, and head for dry land. During that time its primary urge will be to leave the water and re-ignite, so in this short space of time Pikmin will be safe from attack. Since repeatedly throwing blues at it puts them at high risk of being eaten, simply use an Ultra-bitter Spray and beat it. Note that spraying a Fiery Bulblax that has not been extinguished will still have flames coming out of its back.

Environment permitting, it is possible to lure the Fiery Bulblax to the limit of its natural roaming space, where it will look around before turning back. If attacked while it is moving back, it will shake off the Pikmin without attempting to eat any before it takes a few more steps and turning around. Repeating this a few times will be sufficient to kill.

A more risky way of defeating this creature is to throw many Purple Pikmin at it, and each will deal some damage before bursting into flames. Save them and, while the Fiery Bulblax is still stunned, attack again. This eliminates the need for Blue or Red Pikmin.

Pikmin
Naturally, Red Pikmin are best to fight this creature due to their immunity to fire. Beat it as if it were a standard Red Bulborb, by peppering its back with a group of 50 or so reds. Fiery Bulblaxes have high HP for a grub-dog and have a fierce shake to fend off Pikmin. An ultra-spicy spray may be desirable for killing it before it can shake off attackers. Swarming a sleeping Fiery Bulblax with 50 or more Red Pikmin can also kill it quickly, but this is riskier since not all Pikmin will latch on to the beast, leaving them more vulnerable. Ultra-bitter sprays are also effective, but it should be noted the Bulblax's fire continues even while the creature is petrified.

Sometimes a Fiery Bulblax can only be fought with Blue Pikmin, for example in the Valley of Repose where one sleeps across a small lake. In these situations, awake the Bulblax, and then lure it into the water to extinguish its flames, attacking as soon as the flames go out. Using an ultra-bitter spray in these situations is strongly advised to minimize Pikmin losses, as the Bulblax will continue attacking while in the water. In p2 the foe will re-ignite the moment it leaves the water, but in p4 it will remain extinguished until it prepares to go back to sleep, giving a much longer window of time to attack.

If Red or Blue Pikmin are scarce in these situations, you can also throw Purple Pikmin, since they will each cause it damage through their smash and have a chance of stunning it. The Purple Pikmin will either be ignited by the flames or&mdash;if the Bulblax is lured in water&mdash;risk drowning, so this dangerous method must be done hastily if attempted at all.

It should be noted that, although Fiery Bulblaxes do not wake up until touched, they are more sensitive than other Bulborbs when returning to their homes, and can stop in their tracks if Pikmin or leaders enter their territory. This can earn you a little time if you attack a returning Fiery Bulblax just as it pauses to notice you.

Leaders
It is possible to kill a Fiery Bulblax with leaders, but without the Scorch Guard upgrade they are in overwhelming danger of getting burned. And even with that upgrade and the Rocket Fist, the task takes so long that it isn't recommended unless you are in a cave, without a time limit. But if you are to beat the Bulblax with just leaders, simply punch the creature and dodge its bites, as with other Grub-dogs.

Pikmin 4
Similar to the Pikmin 2 Strategy, but you can instantly freeze it with the Ice Blast item. Then rush into the Bulblax. Even after the ice wears off, the Bulblax will stay extinguished.

Notably, if the flames are quenched by leading the creature into water, the Bulblax does not immediately reignite itself upon leaving; it will only do so after any captains or Pikmin have left the area and it is about to go back to sleep. This means that it can be lured into water to extinguish the flames, and then lured out again into a dry area to more safely battle it with Rock or Purple Pikmin.

The Fiery Bulblax (ヤキチャッピー?, lit.: "Sizzling Chappy") is an uncommon enemy that appears in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Bodily excretions of a highly flammable waxy substance interact with the cell structure of this grub-dog's skin, causing a chemical reaction that produces extremely high temperatures. The skin benefits from a spongy cell structure that diffuses the surface heat, protecting the creature's inner organs. Due to the astonishing amount of heat produced by this beast, it should be observed with great caution.

Louie's notes

No stove? No problem! This sizzling beast practically cooks itself. Remember to thoroughly extinguish the steaks prior to eating.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

When I see this blazing beastie, I get a rush of excitement. It's easy to lose track of time while staring fixated at the flame-enshrouded form of the Fiery Bulblax. Its appearance brings to mind ancient molten landscapes from an era before our earliest ancestors!

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Flames rise from the Fiery Bulblax. If you can draw one of the specimens into water, you'll extinguish the flames and open it up to attack from any Pikmin type. If not, you'll have to use red Pikmin or Bulbmin to beat it. Like large Bulborbs, Fiery Bulblaxes devour Pikmin. Keep troops away from their mouths.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Pikmin 2[edit]

Pikmin[edit]

In Pikmin 2 the foe will re-ignite the moment it leaves the water, but in Pikmin 4 it will remain extinguished until it prepares to go back to sleep, giving a much longer window of time to attack.

If Red or Blue Pikmin are scarce in these situations, you can also throw Purple Pikmin, since they will each cause it damage through their smash and have a chance of stunning it. The Purple Pikmin will either be ignited by the flames or—if the Bulblax is lured in water—risk drowning, so this dangerous method must be done hastily if attempted at all.

Leaders[edit]

It is possible to kill a Fiery Bulblax with leaders, but without the Scorch Guard upgrade they are in overwhelming danger of getting burned. And even with that upgrade and the Rocket Fist, the task takes so long that it isn't recommended unless you are in a cave, without a time limit. But if you are to beat the Bulblax with just leaders, simply punch the creature and dodge its bites, as with other Grub-dogs.

Pikmin 4[edit]

Naming[edit]

See more: Grub-dog family#Naming.
 • Common name: Fiery Bulblax. The word "fiery" in its name is clearly due to the fact that it is always ablaze, and "Bulblax" is a different name used for the most powerful Bulborbs, perhaps in relation to a possible planned boss status. The Fiery Bulblax also shares the melted features and protected hide of the Emperor Bulblax (which are more prevalent in Pikmin 4), as well as deeper vocalizations shared with the Empress Bulblax in Pikmin 2. The meaning of the word Bulblax is unknown.
 • Japanese nickname: ヤキチャッピー?. The name could be translated to "Sizzling Chappy", with "Chappy" being the Japanese name for Bulborb.
 • Japanese name: ヒノデメマダラ?, lit.: "Fiery Spotted Bug-eye".
 • Scientific name: Oculus vulcanus. Vulcanus is Latin for "volcano". According to an unused early English script in the game's files, the species name was initially going to simply be volcano.[1]
 • Internal names: Internally, it is simply called firechappy.
 • Prerelease: None.

Trivia[edit]

Piklopedia icon.
 • The Fiery Bulblax's Piklopedia icon is an 80x80 image. This size is only used for bosses. This could mean that at some point during development, the Fiery Bulblax could have been a boss.
 • In Pikmin 2, if a Fiery Bulblax is fought while in water with Blue Pikmin, as soon as it gets out of the water, the fire starts again. However, the Blue Pikmin that are still latched on to its body will not get burned until whistled or shaken off.
