The Fiery Dweevil (ベニショイグモ?, lit.: "Crimson Carrying Spider") is an enemy in Pikmin 2, and Pikmin 4. Fiery Dweevils, like other Dweevils, like to pick up treasures and defeated enemies and put them on their bodies. When there is something on their bodies, they can't be damaged by Pikmin or leaders until the body or treasure is taken off. To take it off ones body, just throw Pikmin on the Dweevil's body or punch it several times. This particular species of Dweevil, when agitated by attacks, will release searing flames that will set Pikmin on fire. This makes Red Pikmin, Bulbmin or Glow Pikmin the best choices in battle. However, since Purple Pikmin can stun any common Dweevil, they will also work well.

Olimar's Notes (Pikmin 4)
“Members of the Dweevil family are known for carrying objects of astounding size on their backs, then mimicking them. The Fiery Dweevil is one species in this family.
Generally, this is a very gentle insect that feeds on grass nectars, but when faced with danger, the Fiery Dweevil ignites flammable internal gasses, juts out its jaw, and spews scorching flames.
As this clearly makes it a rather dangerous insect, it is best not to linger directly in front of it.”Louie's Notes (Pikmin 4)

Behavior
Fiery Dweevils scurry about randomly and take no note of the presence of any leader or Pikmin if left undisturbed. When provoked one will attempt to defend itself by releasing fire below it. The fire will scatter any attacking Pikmin (excluding Red Pikmin, Bulbmin and Glow Pikmin) and will kill them if they are not whistled back to a leader over a period of time. Fiery Dweevils are frail creatures and will die quickly if attacked by even a few Pikmin, or by the punches from a leader.
When a treasure or a corpse of another creature is nearby, a Fiery Dweevil will lift it up onto its head and carry it, making it impossible for Pikmin to collect until it is broken free. When a Dweevil has an item in its possession, it will stay at rest, crouching down, appearing as if it is only the item, until it is approached by a leader or Pikmin, at which point it will stand up and run away.
In Pikmin 4, as with all dweevils, the Fiery Dweevil's range of objects it can carry has increased. Any object that is directly carryable by Pikmin, notably useable items from the Pack, can now be carried by the Dweevil. This even includes fire starters, although this can only be seen with this specific type of dweevil in the Giant's Hearth in-game. Items that can explode, like bomb rocks or ice blasts can be used by the Dweevil when it has a target in its sights, replicating the ability of the Volatile Dweevil from Pikmin 2. It should be noted that Dweevils are not immune to the effects of these bombs, and will immediately die or become frozen as a result of the blast.
Strategy
The following article or section contains guides. |
Pikmin
It's generally safest to attack a Fiery Dweevil with Red Pikmin, Bulbmin or Glow Pikmin. However, the Dweevil itself is frail enough that, in practice, virtually any kind of squad can quickly kill one. If you are not using fire-immune Pikmin, make sure to keep your whistle at the ready in case it gets an attack off.
Purple Pikmin in particular are an incredibly effective option; if they land near the Dweevil, they are guaranteed to stun it, and if they happen to stomp directly on their head, they will inflict massive damage, almost instantly killing it. Rock Pikmin can also kill one extremely quickly with good aim.
Leaders
Simply run up to the Dweevil and start punching. When it prepares to attack, run away, unless you are upgraded with the Scorch Guard, in which case, keep attacking. Even without the Rocket Fist, the Dweevil should go down very quickly.
Oatchi can kill one extremely quickly, even if his Chomp skill hasn't been trained very much. If his Rush skill has been sufficiently upgraded, he can bowl over it for an instant kill. Be careful if he does not have his Pup Scorch Guard though.

Trivia
- The Fiery Dweevil was one of four enemies that were planned for the roulette wheel in Pikmin 2's 2-Player Battle, but ended up being removed. It would've paired with the Hydro Dweevil. The remaining two enemies are the Spotty Bulbear, and the Antenna Beetle.
