The Greater Spotted Jellyfloat (オオマンマン?, lit.: "Giant Manman") is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. Greater Spotted Jellyfloats are members of the Jellyfloat family, and as the name implies, they resemble a large, pinkish version of the Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat. In Pikmin 4, they appears much more solid, looking similar to gelatin. They have much more visible segments, more consistent and dull spots, purple luminescent organs, and more subtle lines on the oral arms. This species is considerably more rare, as it is alien to the region, but its population is quickly displacing that of its smaller cousin. Greater Spotted Jellyfloats have slightly more health and can be defeated in the same manner, but can suck up more Pikmin at once, and even leader if the player is not careful. It is possible to get out of a Jellyfloat quickly by rapidly rotating / . Likewise, all undigested Pikmin and leaders are returned when one is defeated. Throwing Purple Pikmin will knock one to the ground, where it can be easily killed by swarming. Like their lesser cousins, they explode in a flurry of sparkling lights when defeated, but unlike them, they do not emit a song-like sound.

“This lovely floating critter sucks up food by stretching and contracting its body. It's hard to imagine such a graceful creature could be of this world. It would be rather exciting to get sucked in with all the treasures and Pikmin to float on forever. But if that really happened, I wouldn't be of this world for long either!”

Text
“ピンク色の体に、スカート状に一体化した触手と、5本の口腕を持つ陸棲のクラゲ。頭の発光器官で獲物をおびき寄せ、体の下部にある口柄から吸い込んで捕食する。
特徴 その1 空を飛ぶ
- 体内の気圧を下げることで、外気との密度の差で浮力を得ている。
- (Image text:
- (Image text:
- 大型で消化器官が発達していて、一度に捕食する獲物の数も多い
- 口腕の数や長さが異なるほか、体は一回り大きく、渦の向きが異なる)”
Translation
“A terrestrial jellyfish with a pink body, skirt-like unified tentacles, and five oral arms. It attracts prey with the luminescent organ in its head and sucks it up through the orifice on the lower part of its body.
Feature #1: Flying
- By lowering the atmospheric pressure inside its body, it gains buoyancy from the difference in density with the outside air.
- (Image text:
- "It approaches its prey silently and sucks it up by taking advantage of the difference in atmospheric pressure between the air inside and outside its body"
- "It has no nematocysts on its tentacles and oral arms and does not use them to capture prey")
Feature #2: Non-native species
- It is a non-native species that has flown in from another region in the wind, and has become established.
- (Image text:
- "Its large and well-developed digestive organs allow it to feed on a large amount of prey at once"
- "In addition to the number and length of its oral arms being different, its body is one size larger, and the orientation of its spiral is different")”
Strategy
In Pikmin 2. the Greater Spotted Jellyfloat is a large target and therefore can easily be hit with Purple Pikmin. Just one of them will bring the creature to the ground; 6 Pikmin will be needed, otherwise. Once on the ground, the player should either continue to throw Purple Pikmin at it, provided they have enough, or swarm it with a squad of considerable size. Both ways will ensure a quick defeat.
In Pikmin 4, Greater Spotted Jellyfloats are much more dangerous. They can not be weighed down, and kill Pikmin much faster. Any non yellow Pikmin will latch onto the tentacles, where they can be inhaled, excluding Purple Pikmin. As Yellow Pikmin are not usually brought to any caves that contain these Jellyfloats, fighting them will usually be a pain, as they are also quite sensitive to damage, and will shake Pikmin off quickly. Winged Pikmin (who are useful in the Ultimate Testing Range, where a few of these Jellyfloats can be encountered.) can also be used to attack the main body, though due to their low attack power, it's not a fast process without the use of Ultra-spicy spray. Much like the Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat, it can be defeated instantly when Ice Pikmin freeze it, due to its gelatinous body crashing into the floor when frozen. Like in Pikmin 2 Purple Pikmin are still an option, however, due to their lowered throw height and the incresed floating height of the Jellyfloat, it is much more difficult to hit it with Purple Pikmin. In exchange, Purple Pikmin do particularly massive damage when latching onto these beasts, all it takes is to find a single opening where the Jellyfloat lowers down and Purple Pikmin can quickly cause its demise. If you happen to miss, it doesn't matter much since Purple Pikmin are immune to the creature's sucking attack. Another option is Rock Pikmin, who are thrown higher than Purple Pikmin and do not mind the enemy's frequent shaking, since they don't latch on anyway. A small squad Rock Pikmin can quickly and easily defeat the beast within a few consectutive throws. Or, if you just give up, throw 3 Ice Pikmin at it and wait for it to eat them.
An alternate method is possible with only leaders in Pikmin 2. Have the Greater Spotted Jellyfloat absorb one leader, and then switch to the other leader and use an ultra-bitter spray to petrify the Jellyfloat. Switch back to the leader who is currently swallowed, and wiggle the Control Stick to break free. The Jellyfloat will be defeated. It's possible to do this with a single leader by spraying it as he is being sucked in, but this is very difficult.[1]
To note is that in Pikmin 2, if a Greater Spotted Jellyfloat digests a White Pikmin, it will not take damage from it. This is also the case with the Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat.
