The Iridescent Glint Beetle (オオガネモチ?, lit.: "Large Riches Holder") is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. Iridescent Glint Beetles resemble golden, sparkling Iridescent Flint Beetles, but are much rarer. “The golden shine on its gleaming carapace really is gold! It's in this little darling's nature to collect gold from the soil. As you might expect, it's extremely rare to see one in person. I'd never hurt it, so I hope to have one appear before me someday!”
Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide
Behavior
Glint Beetles move fast, making them difficult targets to pin, but at the same time, they have no offensive attributes, so an encounter with one can only end up as a chase. They hide underground, emerging only when approached. Much like the Iridescent Flint Beetle and the Doodlebug, the Glint Beetle can only be damaged by a direct throw to its back, which will cause it to flip over and drop nectar, or in some cases, a treasure. Purple Pikmin can hit the creature with much more ease, as the shock wave caused by the impact of one is enough to flip a Beetle over. Once a Glint Beetle has dropped all it was carrying, it will quickly scurry back underground. It will do the same thing if left undisturbed for too long.
Behavior
The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 4. |
The Iridescent Glint Beetle will move slightly more erratically than its relatives, but not too much so. Once activated, it springs out from the ground, and will move quickly, usually away from the captain. If a Pikmin is landed directly onto one's back, it will flip over briefly and drop something (depending on which game). Once a Glint Beetle has been flipped over three times, it will quickly retreat underground. The same thing will happen if the bug is simply left undisturbed above ground for too long.
Pikmin 2
When spawned above ground, the Glint Beetle drops three random-colored 5-pellets when first hit, and then a dose of ultra-spicy spray on the second and third hits. Underground, the pellets are swapped for three doses of nectar. If the ultra-spicy spray has not been unlocked yet, it just drops more nectar (three doses) in place of the sprays. Some of the Glint Beetles that are underground drop treasure instead, and the Beetles in Challenge Mode always drop a Lustrous Element. A Glint Beetle that drops a treasure will disappear after being hit the first time, dropping no nectar or sprays. If a Glint Beetle that would drop treasure is allowed to disappear before dropping its treasure, it will reappear elsewhere in the sublevel. Just like the Iridescent Flint Beetle, if it's killed whilst petrified, it will shatter instantly, leaving nothing behind except any potential treasure.
Pikmin 4
Glint Beetles will never drop Pellets above ground in this game. By default, they will drop six doses of Ultra-spicy spray- one dose on the first hit, two on the second, and three on the third. However, the Glint Beetle found in Giant's Hearth will drop a Disk of Amusing Wisdom instead on the third hit, replacing the triple dose of spray. The Glint Beetle in Trial of the Sage Leaf's third story Dig Deep will drop a Difficult-Choice Totem, Chance Totem, and Go-with-the-Flow Totem when hit three times, dropping no sprays.
Strategy
The following article or section contains guides. |
Simply throw Pikmin at the creature's back while it is standing still for a few seconds and repeat until you have reaped all its items. Try to predict the creature's movements, and throw your Pikmin one step ahead of it. Be accurate but quick, as the Glint Beetle will only remain active for so long. Purple Pikmin work especially well, and if you have a good number of them, you can throw quickly without worrying about accuracy at all.

In the Super Smash Bros. series
This article or section is a short summary on the enemy in the Super Smash Bros. series. |
The Iridescent Glint Beetle appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as an enemy in each version's exclusive mode, as well as a trophy.
On Smash Run on the 3DS, the Iridescent Glint Beetle, like in the actual game, is a harmless enemy, and will drop gold if the player hits it. The quantities increase the more the player hits it, just like in Pikmin 2. Similarly to the actual games, they move rather fast, and are hard to hit. Most enemies that fall off edges drop their spoils; the Glint Beetle will not do so.
On Smash Tour on the Wii U version, it is an enemy that moves around the board, and bumping against it will make it drop some fighters for the player to use.
The Iridescent Glint Beetle also appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Naming
- See more: Iridescent Flint Beetle#Naming.
- Common name: Iridescent Glint Beetle. The creature's name is a pun on the Iridescent Flint Beetle's name. A glint is a shimmer of light, found on very shiny things.
- Japanese nickname: オオガネモチ?. It translated to "Large Riches Holder", as opposed to the Iridescent Flint Beetle's "Small Riches Holder". It also means "millionaire", referring to how gold is often associated with richness.
- Japanese name: ショウヤコガネ?, lit.: "Village Head Scarab".
- Scientific name: Pilli auricus. The word Pilli means the same as in the Iridescent Flint Beetle's name, while auricus is related to aurum, the Latin word for gold.
- Internal names: Internally, its name is
wealthy
, which is a translation of its Japanese nickname. In Pikmin 4, it is changed toOOKOGANE
. The internal name of the Iridescent Flint Beetle isKOGANE
. - Prerelease: In an earlier version of the game's script, inside the Japanese Disc, it is revealed that the enemy used to be called "Giant Flint Beetle".[1] This is likely due to its Japanese nickname translating to "Large Riches Holder" as opposed to the Iridescent Flint Beetle's "Small Riches Holder".

Trivia
- Though they bury underground after a while, this does not happen in the Piklopedia; this is the same with the Iridescent Flint Beetle and the Doodlebug.
- An early script for Pikmin 2 names the Iridescent Glint Beetle as the "Giant Flint Beetle", suggesting that earlier in development, the Iridescent Glint Beetle was meant to just be a larger variant of the Iridescent Flint Beetle. Internally, all enemies in Pikmin 2 are programmed to function even when resized to abnormal sizes, but only the Iridescent Flint Beetle and the Emperor Bulblax have editable scale parameters.
- The Iridescent Glint Beetle is the only enemy in the Pikmin series that doesn't appear in Pikmin 3 but appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
- As of Pikmin 4, the Iridescent Glint Beetle is said to be a "variety of Beetle", with the word "Beetle" being strangely capitalized. In the Japanese version, it is stated to be a type of 鋼虫? (lit.: "Steel Bug").
