The Withering Blowhog (アオケダタラ) is an enemy in p2 and p4. Withering Blowhogs are a smaller variation of the Puffy Blowhog, and have orange-red skin with yellow spots that seem to form a flame design and a white underside. They also seem to have two whisker-like appendages under their snouts that are white in color. When Pikmin are nearby, they unleash gusts of air (or orange gas in Pikmin 4) which, although significantly weaker than a Puffy Blowhog's breath, will cause the Pikmin's flowers to instantly wilt. In Pikmin 2, Withering Blowhogs can reach Pikmin behind gates or thin walls, which makes destroying a gate guarded by one an incredibly frustrating task. To attack one, several Pikmin must be thrown onto its body, or at least one Purple Pikmin. The weight will ground the Blowhog for a few seconds, utterly helpless; they have less vitality than Puffy Blowhogs, but several attacks may still be needed depending on how many Pikmin are on hand. In Pikmin 4, they can also wilt sprouts, and can rapidly escape after shaking off Pikmin by blowing a burst of gas, flying off and reappearing a short distance away.

If their air blast successfully hits and wilts any Pikmin, they will stop and giggle, potentially leaving it open for a counterattack. While the air cannot shove Purple Pikmin around, it will wilt them anyway. When defeated, they deflate like a balloon.

In Pikmin 4, they will try to fly away and not attempt to blow if the Pikmin squad being targeted is under the effects of the ultra-spicy spray, as powered-up Pikmin can't be withered as long as the effect lasts. This can also happen if the player's Pikmin squad have no flower Pikmin.

Although one might think that the a Withering Blowhog is far out of reach of the leaders down below, the Rocket Fist is actually capable of hitting the creature while in the air with its third punch, but each hit does so little damage that trying to kill it in this manner would be extremely time consuming.

In 2-Player Battle, the Withering Blowhog is one of the selections on the roulette. When chosen, these creatures appear near the opponent's Onion, and act the same as they do in the main story mode.

The Withering Blowhog (アオケダタラ?, lit.: "Aoke Bellows") is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. Withering Blowhogs are a smaller variation of the Puffy Blowhog, and have orange-red skin with yellow spots that seem to form a flame design and a white underside. They also seem to have four whisker-like appendages under their snouts that are white in color. When Pikmin are nearby, they unleash gusts of air (or orange gas in Pikmin 4) which will cause the Pikmin's flowers to instantly wilt. In Pikmin 2, a Withering Blowhog's wind can reach Pikmin behind gates or thin walls, which makes destroying a gate guarded by one an incredibly frustrating task. To attack one, several Pikmin must be thrown onto its body, or at least one Purple Pikmin. The weight will ground the Blowhog for a few seconds, leaving them near helpless. They have less vitality than Puffy Blowhogs, but several attacks may still be needed depending on how many Pikmin are on hand. In Pikmin 4, they can also wilt sprouts, and can rapidly escape after shaking off Pikmin by blowing a burst of gas, flying off and reappearing a short distance away.

In 2-Player Battle, the Withering Blowhog is one of the selections on the roulette. When chosen, these creatures appear near the opponent's Onion, and act the same as they do in the main story mode.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The withering blowhog is a close relative of the puffy blowhog, but its breath is significantly weaker. However, its breath does contain a petal-withering plant hormone that causes flowers to instantly lose their petals. Although its breath has not been studied in detail, analysis of the chemical compounds involved hold great promise for the biotechnology sector.

Louie's notes

Hang this creature on a rack and sun-dry on a hot afternoon. When suitably crisp, grind the sun-dried beast into powder. Makes a great

substitute for cayenne or curry powder!

Dalmo's notes[edit]

You can have a bit of fun with this one by giving it a good poke and watching it wobble and sway through the air like a balloon. Poke it too much, though, and it may spew gas and fly off. It's a mischievous little darling, and the way it scatters flowers and cackles is quite charming!

Olimar's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

The Withering Blowhog can exhale with so much force that it blows the bloom off a Pikmin and turns it into a leaf-bearing sprout. After you battle one of the beasts, chances are your troops will be in need of nectar.

Strategy[edit]

Pikmin[edit]

Throw Pikmin (preferably Purple Pikmin) at it, taking care to avoid the nasal blast, as the loss of flower Pikmin can be frustrating. Purple Pikmin cannot be knocked around by its air blasts, making them ideal candidates for fighting one, although they will still be wilted if hit.

If it does successfully wilt any Pikmin, it will stop and giggle. Use this opportunity to counterattack.

Leaders[edit]

Despite appearances, a Leader can hurt a Withering Blowhog exclusively in Pikmin 2; the third hit from the Rocket Fist combo can hit if performed directly underneath it, although it would take a very long time to kill it exclusively with punches.

In Pikmin 4, if Oatchi's Big Chomp skill has been learned, enabling him to bite in midair, he becomes an ideal candidate for attacking one, as the Withering Blowhog obviously cannot wilt him, although note that it may shove him around with air blasts unless the Brace Boots have been purchased.

Naming[edit]

See more: Blowhog family#Naming.
 • Common name: Withering Blowhog. This blowhog's main ability is to wither away Pikmin's flowers and buds, hence the name.
 • Japanese nickname: アオケダタラ?. The name includes the word たたら? (lit.: "Tatara"), which refers to a type of furnace known for its large bellows. This refers both to the creature's strong breath and flame pattern. The first half of the name, アオケ?, doesn't have any applicable meanings and was likely made for the sound of the word rather than meaning.
 • Japanese name: ミカゼアオケダタラ?, lit.: "Three Winds Aoke Bellows".
 • Scientific name: Sus decrepitia. It uses the main genus name on the blowhog family, and decrepitia is very similar to the Latin word decrepita, meaning "feeble". This is because of its ability to weaken Pikmin.
 • Internal names: Internally, it is known as hanachirashi, where hana is はな? (lit.: "flower"), and chirashi is らし?, which means "to scatter" or "to disperse". This name could have been decided due to the fact that when a Pikmin's flower is blown off, its petals scatter everywhere.
 • Prerelease: None.

Trivia[edit]

 • In the Japanese version and in an early version of the English translation, the plant withering hormone is said to be an ethylene-like compound.[1]
 • Interestingly, when the game is paused or a cutscene is active, the light bands of color that flash across the Blowhog's skin will still move, even if the Blowhog itself is motionless.
 • The Withering Blowhog resembles the iwagen, an unused object in Pikmin.
