The Mamuta <span style="line-height:20px;">(</span><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;line-height:19px;">ミウリン Miurin)</span> is a peculiar enemy found in the first two Pikmin games. It is fairly large, and has two small eyes with dark markings around each one. Its body is notably asymmetricaland is covers in tiny white and grey hairs. It has markings on its arms, hinting it might be sentient. In the first game, it just stands and watches when Pikmin walk by. If any harm comes to it, however, it becomes enraged and pounds the Pikmin into the ground. This doesn't kill them, but replants them and turns them into flower Pikmin by some unknown process, which can be used to one's advantage, though it can get very annoying when it comes to plucking the Pikmin if one is in a hurry. However, with the Pluckaphone, a Mamuta can do more good than bad, as the planted Pikmin can simply be called out of the ground.

Captains, as opposed to Pikmin, do take damage, although only a small amount, and are similarly pounded into the ground. In the first Pikmin game, this causes the creature to stop attacking and appear to relax; it will only attack again if Pikmin are plucked or if it is attacked.
The Mamuta (Help:IPA/English Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key, Japanese: ミウリン) is an enemy found in p1, p2, and p4. It is fairly large, seemingly rocky and has two small eyes with indents around each one.  Its body is notably asymmetrical with large, muscular arms that have strange markings around the wrists, and it is covered in tiny white and gray hairs. The hairs are more visible in Pikmin 4, and upon closer inspection in this game, the markings are actually wristbands, which also have thicker lines in this installment. The single Mamuta in the first game is neutral, and just stands and watches when Pikmin walk by; if any harm comes to it, however, it becomes enraged and retaliates. In Pikmin 2, despite being initially so gentle that Unmarked Spectralids can land on them, Mamutas become aggressive when approached. In Pikmin 4, they return to their behavior from Pikmin. They are found relaxing and sometimes even purring, with White and Yellow Spectralids fluttering about and resting on the Mamuta.

The Mamuta is found at The Impact Site on even-numbered days (on odd-numbered days, the Goolix is encountered instead), starting on Day 8. In Pikmin, the Smoky Progg is thought by Olimar to be a larval Mamuta suffering from a birth defect, although this is just a theory.
These creatures attack by pounding Pikmin into the ground. This doesn't kill them, but replants them and turns them into flowered Pikmin by some unknown process. Leaders, as opposed to Pikmin, do take damage from Mamuta attacks.

In Pikmin 2, Mamutas are only found underground, and are more aggressive, attacking any Pikmin that approach them. They have less health than they did in the first game, yet their attacks have the same effect as before. A Mamuta inside the Frontier Cavern holds the Brute Knuckles, making it the only non-boss enemy that holds a piece of the Explorer's Friend Series, which constitutes the Exploration Kit.

Behavior
In the first Pikmin game, the creature starts off just wandering around the area randomly. If attacked, it will start raging and will attack back, smacking both Olimar and Pikmin. It can slap directly in front of itself, to the side with one hand, or slightly to the side with both. Hitting Olimar will cause the creature to stop attacking and appear to relax, after emitting some odd donkey-like noises. It will only attack again if Pikmin are plucked or if it is attacked. It will eventually get up and start walking around again. If Olimar leaves the Mamuta's range, it will swing its arms around and smash the ground to vent its anger, leading it to become neutral again.

In Pikmin 2, they are motionless &ndash; they are so still that Unmarked Spectralids will land on them, if there are any nearby. Once a leader or Pikmin approaches however, it will enter an aggressive state, and any Unmarked Spectralids on it will fly off. Unlike in Pikmin, a Mamuta in this game will not rest after attacking. If nothing is in its range after it has been alerted, it will tend to wander for awhile before becoming motionless again.

Battle Strategy
Their behavior in Pikmin 4 is closer to how it was in the first game. They will start off relaxing, even purring, surrounded by gentle Spectralids. When enraged they will bounce up and down before pounding the player, Oatchi, and Pikmin, using both its front pound, and side pounds from Pikmin. After calming down, it will lumber around aimlessly. If it plants any Pikmin, it will return to sitting, getting enraged if the sprouts are plucked.
Pikmin
There is no threat, only the problem of having to pick planted Pikmin, which can take a while without the Pikmin 2 exclusive Pluckaphone, although it can be troublesome if the Mamuta hits the captain, incapacitating him for a second or more. Throwing Pikmin onto it from a distance is often more effective than swarming, unless Olimar is accompanied by a large group of Pikmin. Attacking from behind is also advantageous. Don't use bomb rocks on it; they do very little damage.

Captains
Strategy
Although very difficult, Olimar can defeat the Mamuta by attacking it from behind. However, it is recommended that Olimar uses Pikmin, as attacking the Mamuta alone is very time-consuming.
guide
Pikmin 2
The same strategy for the first game applies here, except now there is less rush since they are now cave-exclusive enemies. Purple Pikmin work well for defeating the Mamuta. It should be noted that the Mamuta is easier to beat with Captains as well.
Pikmin
There is no threat to your Pikmin, only the problem of having to pluck planted Pikmin, which can take a while without the Pluckaphone (Pikmin 2 only), although it can be troublesome if the Mamuta hits the leaders, incapacitating him for a second or more. Throwing Pikmin onto it from a distance is often more effective to avoid this than swarming, unless Olimar is accompanied by a large group of Pikmin. Attacking from behind is also advantageous. Purple Pikmin allow for an especially easy defeat. One must try to be careful; some Pikmin being planted is inevitable, but if all (not possible in Pikmin 2) of your army is planted, then it is likely that you will have to either resort to throwing and calling back two or three salvaged Pikmin, as the Mamuta will attempt to attack you if you pluck any more than that; or, you could be forced to use the below strategy, which is marginally simpler and much harder.

Leaders
Although very difficult, Olimar can defeat the Mamuta by attacking it from behind. However, it is recommended that Olimar uses Pikmin, as attacking the Mamuta by himself is time-consuming. In Pikmin 2, this is less of a problem due to Mamutas only appearing in caves with no time limit. Also, the Mamutas in both games cause major damage to Olimar and, at least in the first game, can land multiple hits on him while he is incapacitated. This can damage him even to the point of death. Inexperienced players, beware.

*Interestingly, the patterns on the Mamuta's wrists are the same as the patterns on the Onions. This may suggest some deeper relation to Pikmin as a species.
*In Pikmin, the Mamuta appears to be resistant to bomb rocks, taking minuscule damage when struck.
*The Mamuta's recipe is very different in the Japanese Version, instead saying to be quick about boiling it as it spoils quickly, but to be kept for 2-3 days when boiling. Coincidentally, the early recipe for the Mamuta is exactly the same as the Japanese version.
* In Pikmin 2, if there are 99 Pikmin buried in the same area or sublevel, then it will be impossible for a Mamuta to bury the 100th Pikmin. That Pikmin will simply get knocked back.
* Mamutas will try to pound Glow Pikmin into the ground even though that type is impossible to bury: the Glow Pikmin will only stay embedded for a few seconds before popping up, and unlike other Pikmin types, they do not gain flowers from the Mamuta's burial. This interaction can be observed in the first sublevel of The Mud Pit.
** Also in the same sublevel, if a Mamuta pounds Pikmin onto a hard surface (in this case, frozen mud), this will knock back the Pikmin instead of killing it.

*According to the Creature Montage, the Smoky Progg is believed to be the larval form of the Mamuta, which is ironic since the Smoky Progg is hostile while the Mamutas are generally peaceful. Interestingly, in Challenge Mode, the Mamuta is found at the Distant Spring, the same area that the Smoky Progg is found at in the Story Mode.

Attacks Pound Pikmin into the ground

The Mamuta (/mə.ˈmu:.tə/ mə-MOO-tə, Japanese: ミウリン?) is an enemy found in Pikmin, Pikmin 2, and Pikmin 4.

These creatures attack by pounding Pikmin into the ground. This doesn't kill them, but replants them and turns them into flowered Pikmin by some unknown process. This can be used to one's advantage, though it can get very annoying when it comes to plucking the Pikmin if one is in a hurry. With the Pluckaphone, however, a Mamuta can do more good than bad, as the planted Pikmin can simply be called out of the ground. Leaders, as opposed to Pikmin, do take damage from Mamuta attacks.

In Pikmin, the Mamuta is found at The Impact Site on even-numbered days, starting on day 8 (on odd-numbered days, the Goolix is encountered instead), but in Pikmin 2, Mamutas are only found underground, and their health and weight is less than in Pikmin. A Mamuta inside the Frontier Cavern holds the Brute Knuckles, making it the only non-boss enemy which carries a piece of the Explorer's Friend Series, which constitutes the Exploration Kit.

Behavior[edit]

In the first Pikmin game, the creature starts off just wandering around the area randomly. If attacked, it will start raging and will attack back, smacking both Olimar and Pikmin. It can slap directly in front of itself, to the side with one hand, or slightly to the side with both. Hitting Olimar will cause the creature to stop attacking and appear to relax, after emitting some odd donkey-like noises. It will only attack again if Pikmin are plucked or if it is attacked. If Olimar leaves the Mamuta's range, it will swing its arms around and smash the ground to vent its anger, leading it to become neutral again.

In Pikmin 2, they are motionless – they are so still that Unmarked Spectralids will land on them, if there are any nearby.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Pikmin[edit]

Leaders[edit]

Although very difficult, Olimar can defeat the Mamuta by attacking it from behind. However, it is recommended that Olimar uses Pikmin, as attacking the Mamuta by himself is time-consuming. In Pikmin 2, this is less of a problem due to Mamutas only appearing in caves with no time limit. Also, the Mamutas in both games cause major damage to Olimar and, at least in the first game, can land multiple hits on him while he is incapacitated. This can damage him even to the point of death. Inexperienced players, beware.

Notes

Olimar's voyage log

This seems to be a gentle, flower-loving creature, but if angered, it is fierce. Its mighty open-handed smack... It reminds me of the time back home when a mosquito landed on my head, and my wife tried to get it...

Reel notes

This creature seems fond of flowers, but only for their decorative properties.

Olimar's notes

The imbalanced, asymmetrical arms of the mamuta are among its most notable features. Feeding on seeds and fruit, the mamuta is known to actually sow and grow plant species. While other species have exhibited seed-burying behavior for the purpose of storage, the mamuta is the only species so far known to actually cultivate fields of plants.

Louie's notes

Inedible. Tastes like chicken.

Olimar's voyage log (Nintendo Switch)[edit]

This seems to be a gentle, flower-loving creature, but if angered, it is fierce. Its mighty open-handed smack was so powerful I feared my helmet might crack open.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

A gentle creature removed from the fierce competition of the strong eating the weak. It sits in gardens in a pool of sunlight, looking content as it gazes out its big round eyes at a plant it has raised that's just starting to sprout. Don't tease this mild-mannered beastie by messing with the delicate sprouts it's tending.

Pikmin Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Displaying a powerful body covered with short white hair, this creature seems to enjoy the presence of beautiful flowers and other decorations. The armbandlike attachment makes one think that this creature might be intelligent, but no details are known. Usually prone to peaceful behavior, this creature will go mad when attacked and retaliate with scissorlike chopping motions of its powerful arms that bury any opponent in the ground.
If you visit the Impact Site on an even-numbered day (between Days 8 and 30), you'll encounter the mamuta on the big tree stump. If the mamuta attacks your Pikmin, it won't harm them—it will merely pound them into the ground, and your replanted Pikmin will instantly bloom into flowers.

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

A Mamuta cannot defeat a Pikmin, but it can pound the trooper into the ground with its heavy arms. In fact, one rock beast can bury several Pikmin with a single blow. After you defeat the Mamuta with flying attacks, be sure to pluck your buddies from the soil—their tops will be in full bloom.

  • Japanese nickname: ミウリン?. This name also seems to have no real meaning.
  • Japanese name: ミウリン?. It is the same as the Japanese nickname.
  • Scientific name: Hortulanus asymmetria. Hortulanus is Latin for "gardener", referring to its tendency to grow plants, and asymmetria is a reference to its asymmetrical shape.
  • Internal names: The internal name in both games is simply the Japanese name (ミウリン?), although written as miulin instead of miurin in Pikmin 2.
  • Prerelease: Its scientific name in the GameCube Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc Version 18 is Mamuta.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • Interestingly, the patterns on the Mamuta's wrists are the same as the patterns on the Onions. This may suggest some deeper relation to Pikmin as a species.
  • In Pikmin, the Mamuta appears to be resistant to bomb rocks, taking minuscule damage when struck.
  • The Mamuta's recipe is very different in the Japanese Version, instead saying to be quick about boiling it as it spoils quickly, but to be kept for 2-3 days when boiling. Coincidentally, the early recipe for the Mamuta is exactly the same as the Japanese version.[2]
  • In Pikmin 2, if there are 99 Pikmin buried in the same area or sublevel, then it will be impossible for a Mamuta to bury the 100th Pikmin. That Pikmin will simply get knocked back.[3]
  • Mamutas will try to pound Glow Pikmin into the ground even though that type is impossible to bury: the Glow Pikmin will only stay embedded for a few seconds before popping up, and unlike other Pikmin types, they do not gain flowers from the Mamuta's burial. This interaction can be observed in the first sublevel of The Mud Pit.
    • Also in the same sublevel, if a Mamuta pounds Pikmin onto a hard surface (in this case, frozen mud), this will knock back the Pikmin instead of killing it.
