The Gildemander (タカラサンショウ?, lit.: "Treasure Salamander") is a boss only Pikmin 4. These creatures are rare, only being spotted in a few locations. These are adult versions of the Gildemandwee.

Gildemanders are large, four-legged, salamander-like, creatures that have a flat and muscular body colored in a deep brown shade. Their most distinctive feature is their backs, adorned with large, jagged, chunks of golden-like stone that shine under the light. These act as armor for Gildemanders, protecting themselves from their one weakness—their bright red spots. These spots are underneath the golden stones and they are only exposed once said stones are knocked off from their backs. Gildemanders have a broad, slightly flattened, head with beady little eyes surrounded by little brown, bumpy, protrusions—heavily resembling scale-esc growths; giving its face a more weathered look. At the top of a Gildemander's head lays a bioluminescent lure protruding from their foreheads, similar to that of an anglefish. Finally, Gildemanders have large tongues, capable or extending far from their mouths and large flexible feats. Their legs, similar to their eyes, are covered in these bumpy protrusions, and they are also equipped with three claws.

Behavior

Gildemanders will either wander about or lie and wait until the leader and their Pikmin enter their territory. Once they do, Gildemanders will begin crawling toward them and will attempt to eat the Pikmin using their large, flexible tongues. Unlike other creatures that typically have a limit to how many Pikmin can be eaten at once, Gildemanders can eat as many Pikmin as they can catch with a swipe of their tongues, making frontal attacks inadvisable due to the possibility of eating most, if not all, of the Pikmin in a player's squad in one fell swoop.

When Gildemanders cannot find any leaders or Pikmin, they will look about and then begin wandering again. When the gold-like stones on a Gildemander's back are knocked off, reattaching them will become a Gildemander's main priority. If knocking a piece off exposed one of the weak points on their backs, Gildemanders will be stunned for approximately four seconds. When this gold chunk is knocked off, any Pikmin in your squad that are not on Oatchi or Moss, or are not attacking their weak spots, will automatically begin to attack the fallen nuggets. This further endangers Pikmin from being eaten by Gildemanders, due to the previously mentioned lack of a cap to their eating capacity. They will pursue the gold one piece at a time and grab it with their tongues, ensnaring all Pikmin currently attacking the gold as well. They will then toss the gold piece onto their backs, covering its gemstone-like weak spots and knocking any Pikmin attacking it off.

If many Pikmin are attacking a Gildemander at once, they will shake their body to scatter them. When one of the weak spots on their back shatters, it is briefly stunned. Once all three weak spots are destroyed, the creature is defeated.

If a Gildemander is active in the current area or sublevel, your Treasure Gauge will be disrupted and will not be able to accurately show you where treasure is, though this usually isn't an issue due to its boss status limiting it to areas where no treasures are particularly difficult to find.

Strategy

With Pikmin

A Gildemander has 3 weak spots on their back, the only spots capable of being damaged. These weak spots are covered in golden-like stones that need to be removed beforehand. Using a large squad of Pikmin, throw them at the Gildemander's back until they knock some of the golden stones off. Once a stone has successfully been knocked off, a red spot will appear. Have your Pikmin attack this red lump until it is fully destroyed. The same tactic should be applied for the remaining gold chunks. However, it should be noted that Pikmin (both idle and in your squad) can get distracted by these golden chunks on the floor, causing them to rush over to them. These golden chunks should be destroyed when the time is right; this can be done simply by charging or swarming them with a large squad.

A much quicker way of defeating the Gildemander is to use a somewhat large squad of Winged Pikmin, more than 40 units being preferable. Before engaging the enemy, use an Ultra-Spicy Spray and circle towards its back before charging with your Pikmin. Because Winged Pikmin have the ability to hone in and repeatedly attack both nuggets and weak spots, they will quickly take care of most of them within seconds. Winged Pikmin sometimes will not home in on the top weak spot in the middle of the Gildemander's back; in this case, whistle your squad and rush again towards this spot from the side of the beast. If all goes well, this should mean a swift end to the Gildemander.

Alternate methods

If you lack a decent amount of Pikmin, a decent method involves a mixture of Oatchi and Bomb Rocks. Having Oatchi's Mega Rush be at level 1 allows for him to stun the Gildemander and knock off one golden chunk. Having his Big Chomp also be at level 1 allows for Oatchi to attack mid-air. Oatchi would be able to get the Gildemander to around half health, but he will be unable to attack the final weak spot on the top of the Gildemander's back. By throwing around 5 Bomb Rocks, the beast should be defeated. You could also feed the Gildemander 8 Bomb Rocks, each dealing 1/10th of its health.

Notes

Dalmo's notes

Notice the gold sparkles on its back. In order to survive, this delight of a creature spends a mind-boggling amount of time collecting those special gold stones. Though it isn't real gold, it can confuse the sensors. That's another marvel of the natural world for you.

Olimar's notes

The ore-like growth on its back is a coagulated bodily fluid that includes a substance similar to sparklium, which can make our mechanical sensors "go berserk," to use the technical term. This living ore emits a scent that lures the creatures' prey, so it's also important for their feeding process.

The lantern-like organ atop its head emits electromagnetic waves that are known to affect Pikmin and Onions, confusing them into thinking the Gildemander is their leader, allowing it to withdraw Pikmin directly from the Onion. However, it cannot go so far as to command them as a squad, so the Pikmin will often hide under cover and are able to avoid ingestion.

Louie's notes

The meat gives off a faint aroma similar to a hot pepper. The flavor itself is subtle and elegant. Chargrill the lantern until blackened, and you've got a nutritional superfood.

Trivia

  • The Gildemander and it's juvenile counterpart have the glow removed from their lanterns when all the fake gold is destroyed. The interesting part is, when using a Lightning Shock (which normally disables most animations) and destroying the fake gold while it's stunned, the lantern will dim immediately rather than waiting for the stun to end.
  • According to the History and Stats page, the gold on its back is an enemy.

Translation

A relative of terrestrial salamanders, it carries on its back a biomineral consisting of a coagulated bodily fluid. It has a gentle disposition but a strong appetite, and will try to swallow anything that comes near it.

Feature #1: Large mouth

With its large mouth and tongue, it licks its prey.
(Image text: "Its eyes are small and round and its eyesight is not good, but it uses its sense of smell and air vibrations to locate its prey")

Feature #2: Biomineral

The biomineral contains elements similar to sulfide minerals and has a metallic luster.
