The Creeping Chrysanthemum (びっくり菊?, lit.: "Surprising Chrysanthemum") is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. When dormant, Creeping Chrysanthemums greatly resemble large flowers used for level scenery. When Pikmin or the leaders get close, they will spring out of the ground, revealing their root-legs and their bulbous bodies.
In Pikmin 2, they resemble Margarets when dormant, but they can be told apart from the normal flowers, as they have one fewer flower, no leaves on their "stems", slightly visible patterns on their stem, and their large flowers have the Chrysanthemum's eyes visible. They have large red mouths that emerge from their tallest flowers. They move moderately slowly, and will return to their original spots if left alone for a while. They replant themselves by standing above the spot where they originally came and sucking themselves into the ground until only the "flowers" remain. These enemies cannot be petrified while they are in the ground.
The Chrysanthemums were heavily redesigned in Pikmin 4. They now have white flowers resembling Fleabane, their mouths are at the top of their bodies instead of on stalks, they have large tongues which they launch to attack and their legs now resemble those of frogs. When they launch their tongues and miss, they will take a while to retrieve them.
The Creeping Chrysanthemum is also a collectible trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Behavior[edit]
When idle, the Creeping Chrysanthemum will remain hidden in plain-sight, camouflaging itself as a harmless flower. The flower it mimics is a Margaret in Pikmin 2, and in Pikmin 4 it resembles a Fleabane. This mimicry allows it to blend into its surroundings and avoid detection – although it can be spotted upon closer inspection due to a pair of eyes that are visible on the plant. The Creeping Chrysanthemum stays dormant until either a leader or Pikmin enter its territory, at which point it quickly emerged from the ground, revealing its true body.
Once the Creeping Chrysanthemum emerges from the ground, it will attempt to attack any Pikmin or leaders. In Pikmin 2, it does this by swinging down its large, red mouth to hopefully capture any Pikmin. The mouth acts like a carnivorous plant, as it attempts to snap shut on unsuspecting victims. If it succeeds in its attacks, Pikmin will be consumed quickly. However, if the Creeping Chrysanthemum fails or misses its attack, it will instead slam its mouth into its own body, causing it to fall onto its back. The Chrysanthemum will then struggle to right itself for some time, shuffling left to right before it stands up once more. In Pikmin 4, due to its drastic change in appearance, the way it attacks has changed a bit. It no longer relies on the large, red mouth but instead relies on the mouth on its actual body. It shoots out a large, frog-like tongue that is covered in spiky protrusions from its mouth in attempt to eat any Pikmin. It if connects, it will consume any caught Pikmin. If it misses, the tongue quickly retreats, lightly hits the top of its body, and then hangs outside its mouth for a few seconds. During this short timeframe, the Chrysanthemum will be stunned, leaving it vulnerable before it attacks once more.
Once there are no more leaders or Pikmin nearby, the Creeping Chrysanthemum will return to its flower-like form, waiting for another disturbance. To shake off any attackers on its body, the Chrysanthemum will inflate its body to shake off the attackers.

Strategy[edit]
The following article or section contains guides. |
With Pikmin[edit]
Creeping Chrysanthemums hide in plain-sight, so you should remain vigilant when interacting with Margarets or Fleabanes depending on the game you're playing. Your best bet in defeating this creature is to first bait it into attacking, as when it misses it stuns itself for a short time. During this short time frame, you should rush in with a moderately-sized group of Pikmin. Its entire body is vulnerable to damage, so swarming it with your Pikmin will deal a good amount of damage quickly.
In Pikmin 2, Purple Pikmin are your best option, as they have the chance to stun the enemy, increasing the time you have to deal damage, as well as the fact they are strong attackers. In Pikmin 4, Ice Pikmin are able to freeze the beast, also increasing your time to deal damage. Also in Pikmin 4, Winged Pikmin are useful for bypassing the creatures tongued-attack, although they are unlikely to be available when you first encounter the Chrysanthemum as they can first be unlocked in the Serene Shores, whereas the Chrysanthemum first appears in the Blossoming Arcadia.
Alternate methods[edit]
If you want to reduce the chance of Pikmin losses, you could simple punch the Chysanthemum until it's defeated, although this will take some time. You could bait it into attacking, causing it to miss, giving you a brief window to strike. In Pikmin 4, Oatchi is a great way to defeat the Chrysanthemum, so long as he has a decently leveled Chomp and Rush. Make sure to dodge its attack and circle around to its backside. If Oatchi's Rush skill is maxed out, he'll be able to stun the Chrysanthemum, extending the time it remains stunned. Finally, using a single Bomb Rock will instantly put an end to the creature – both throwing and feeding it.

Olimar's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]
“Like Pikmin, the Creeping Chrysanthemum is a member of a group of creatures with ambulatory root structures.
This creature is known as a "mimic," but because it is actually a form of plant, this label is not entirely accurate. It uses its mimicry to lie in wait and ambush prey, unrecognized even by Pikmin despite being members of the same class of organisms.
It relies on preying upon other creatures to provide sustenance, so it has no need of leaves for photosynthesis.
Generally speaking, the role of plants within an ecosystem is as a producer species, and thus plants are generally found at the bottom of the food pyramid. However, on this strange planet, the line between producer plants and consumer plants is blurred.”Louie's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]

Trivia[edit]
- Despite its appearance, Pikmin 2's Creeping Chrysanthemum uses the same AI that is also used for the Red Bulborb, Hairy Bulborb, Orange Bulborb, and Fiery Bulblax.[2]
- The Creeping Chrysanthemum shares a genus name with the Dandelion even though they are in separate families; in real life, this is impossible, as different species cannot be in the same genus and different families. This is likely a mistake.
- In Pikmin 2, the Creeping Chrysanthemum is voiced by Takahiro Watanabe.[3]
- Despite the Creeping Chrysanthemum's drastically different appearance from Pikmin 2, Olimar and Louie's Piklopedia notes remain mostly unchanged in Pikmin 4, meaning that Olimar still states that the creature has no need for leaves despite it now possessing them. This is made even more bizarre considering the fact that Olimar's notes are updated to say that Pikmin are fooled by the mimic, contrary to them supposedly seeing past it according to Pikmin 2.
- While not stated within Pikmin 4, the Pikmin Garden website's page for the Creeping Chrysanthemum has a section stating that its appearance can vary depending on its host while showing the Pikmin 2 design, implying that both are the same creature despite their drastically different appearances.
- Olimar's notes on the Creeping Chrysanthemum in the Japanese version of Pikmin 2 are the first mention of the Ambuloradicis class, which would go unnamed in English until Pikmin 4.
