Unmarked Spectralids (or Unmarked Spectralid, see below; サンショクシジミ?, lit.: "Tricolored Lycaenids") are insects in Pikmin 2. They resemble small butterflies and can be red, purple, or yellow. They are one of the harmless enemies in the Pikmin series, having no means of attack and doing nothing but fluttering around. They are located in specific patches of plants and appear upon being disturbed, though in some caves they are readily visible. They will leave the area's boundaries some time after Pikmin and leaders come within range of a swarm of them. Their color indicates what they drop when killed - a drop of ultra-spicy spray (red), ultra-bitter spray (purple) or nectar (yellow). Underground, they only have a 20% chance of dropping these rewards. These creatures instantly collapse and die if touched by a single Pikmin. Upon being petrified, they will fall down to the ground and crumble; in the Piklopedia, however, they will remain intact.

The only area aboveground they appear in is the Awakening Wood, with one group hidden in a Margaret near the Sunseed Berry, and another in a nearby Figwort (next to the bridge there). Red and purple Spectralids do not appear above ground, and can only be found with yellow Spectralids in rest sublevels of certain caves, usually found in clusters of 20 or more. In the Awakening Wood, only four of them appear together in each spot.

Unmarked Spectralids do not appear in Pikmin 3 or Pikmin 4, and have been replaced with Red Spectralids, Yellow Spectralids, and White Spectralids. However, they are referenced in Olimar's notes for the White Spectralids in both games.

When strolling through the forests of this planet, clouds of these creatures are seen dancing overhead. Like flower petals drifting in the breeze, the sight of flitterbies dancing in the lush green undergrowth is unforgettable. Flitterbie collectors drool over specimen sample boxes lined up in order, highlighting the slight color gradation changes from blue to red to yellow. Such items fetch particularly high prices at auction.

Spectralids don't provide a lot of meat, but the exquisitely elegant wings are surprisingly tasty, particularly when expertly prepared with a sweet candied glaze.

The butterflies offer more atmosphere than gameplay challenge. If you have the time, you may toss some Pikmin into a flock of the colorful creatures and collect their bodies for Pikmin sprouts, color-matched nectar or Pokos.

Interactions

Unmarked Spectralids seem to not fear creatures that are idling. If there is a Mamuta in the same level as a swarm of Unmarked Spectralids, it is possible to spot some of the Spectralids land on the creature as it idles. In addition, after both the Unmarked Spectralids and the Red, Orange, and Hairy Bulborbs have been added to the in-game Piklopedia, the Spectralids can be seen flying around the former two bulborbs in their respective Piklopedia files.

Spectralids merely flutter about without waking up the bulborb and may occasionally land on it, but due to the way collisions work in the game they are unreasonably strong. As a result, they can push the bulborb around, sometimes even shoving it out of the regular map boundaries.[1]

If you have many Pikmin with you, throw them rapidly into the air in all directions in an attempt to knock them down. Otherwise, you can spray a large group with an ultra-bitter spray, since spraying them makes them fall to the ground, burst, and instantly die.

They cannot be damaged with punches in any way, not even while petrified or resting atop a Mamuta.

Naming

  • Common name: Unmarked Spectralids. The word "Unmarked" is used because these creatures do not have any markings on them. "Spectralids" relates to the word "spectral", referring to their vibrant colors. Given that the name of entries in the Piklopedia is always in singular, and there is no instance in the game of the term "Spectralid", it is likely that "Spectralids" both refers to one creature, singular, as well as multiple, plural. This trend continues in Pikmin 3. That said, there is no specific mention of the creature in singular, outside of the Piklopedia entry name, so it is possible its singular name is something else, albeit unknown.
  • Japanese nickname: サンショクシジミ?, lit.: "Tricolored Lycaenids".
  • Japanese name: モンナシモリシジミ?, lit.: "Patternless Forest Lycaenid".
  • Scientific name: Fenestari prismatus. Fenestari is close to fenestra, which is Latin for "window". Prismatus is similar to "prism", possibly a nod to how triangular prisms can disperse light in a colorful rainbow; color variety being a strong theme in the naming and nature of the Spectralids.
  • Internal names: The internal name for the Unmarked Spectralids is shijimichou, or "シジミチョウ?", which is a butterfly belonging to the Lycaenidae family.

  • Although their health is specified to be 200 in the game files, they are programmed to die instantly when a Pikmin is thrown at them, making this health value unused.
    • In addition, even if they are hit by a bomb rock's explosion, their health will drop to 0, but they will continue to be alive.[2]
  • Unmarked Spectralids are the only creatures to appear in another creature's Piklopedia file.
  • If the Spectralids is resting on a Mamuta, and the player sprays the Mamuta, the Spectralids will fly off and flutter about for a bit. Killing the petrified Mamuta and leaving the scene can cause the Spectralids to return to its original position, which means it will stand in mid-air.[3]
  • The Beady Long Legs is fully programmed to drop 25 Unmarked Spectralids upon death if it has no treasure. However, due to a mistake from the programmers, this does not occur, and it simply drops nothing.[4]
  • While Unmarked Spectralids fall to the floor and shatter when petrified, this is not the case in the Piklopedia.
