The Horned Cannon Beetle (フタクチカブト?, lit.: "Two-Mouthed Beetle"), known as the Armored Cannon Beetle (フタクチドックリ?, lit.: "Two-Mouth Tokkuri") in Pikmin is a boss found in Pikmin and Pikmin 4. In Pikmin, it is a large, black, almost shiny beetle with a thick, rounded shell of armor and a blowhole above its head. In Pikmin 4, it's shell is less metallic and has more segmented shell, along with longer mandibles. The blowhole is also larger and higher up on the shell, pointing at an angle instead of being front facing. It's overall more detailed, but as these details are shared with the Arctic Cannon Beetle, these differences are likely due to graphical improvements. It attacks by inhaling through this opening and subsequently firing a rolling rock from its mouth that travels in a straight path, which crushes any Pikmin in its path, and only stops when it hits a wall or another enemy. To defeat the creature, one must attack its abdomen: attacking other parts of the creature (like its legs) won't damage it.

Behavior
Before engaging it will wander within a set area, scanning its surroundings. Upon noticing a threat, it will lock onto it, and after a moment, start inhaling. After it inhales, it will spit out a massive boulder, which will crush Pikmin, including Rock Pikmin when fighting it in Hero's Hideaway, due to the hard surface. If a Pikmin is thrown into the horn while it's inhaling, the Beetle will choke, opening it's shell to vent heat through the holes in its fleshy back, providing an opportunity to attack. Once defeated, the beetle will fall over forwards, its shell slightly exposed. In Pikmin 4, it's behavior is the same, the only differences being longer charge time, larger boulders, and the fact that it doesn't idly shake.
Locations
- Pikmin
- The Forest of Hope: It is found behind two Bramble Gates at the farthest northern part of the area, guarding the Radiation Canopy.
- The Distant Spring: Within the central stump of the area. Defeating it rewards the player with the Bowsprit.
- Pikmin 4
- Hero's Hideaway: Found on the coffee table where Olimar fights a Porquillion in the prologue and in Shipwreck Tale. Holds a Divine Balloon.
- Subterranean Swarm: Found on the third sublevel. Holds the Creativity Conduit.
- Sun-Speckled Terrace (Olimar's Shipwrecked Tale): Guards the Meandering Slope landing site.
Strategy
The following article or section contains guides. |
The Horned Cannon Beetle is a deceptively simple and easy fight. Once the player begins to engage it, wait for the Beetle to inhale through its top blow hole. Once it does, you have a rather generous amount of time to throw a single Pikmin into it to clog it. Once stops, the beetle's rear shell opens up, exposing its abdomen for attack. Then throw the Pikmin onto its back. Once it shuts its shell, whistle your Pikmin back and repeat the process until the boss is defeated. In Pikmin 4, the strategy is the same, with the added ability of rushing the back with Oatchi and a squad of Pikmin. Rock Pikmin and/or Purple Pikmin is recommended.

Olimar's voyage log
“This creature spits out massive rocks and boasts an impenetrable shell that repels all Pikmin attacks. Just before spitting out a boulder, it sucks in large breaths of air... Perhaps its air hole will provide a clue to it's weakness.”
Reel Notes
“This migrant lithopod has developed a stronger carapace than its relatives.”

Olimar's Notes
“Males of this species are known for their hornlike blowholes. When females reach maturity, their blowhole closes and they lose the ability to launch rocks.
At the start of breeding season, the females lay eggs on rocks launched by a male. The rocks then become food for the growing larvae.
Though once mistaken for adult Armored Cannon Beetles, this species is actually a naturalized non-native species that migrated here from another continent.
The Horned Cannon Beetle can breed with adult Armored Cannon Beetles, but only about half of the eggs will actually hatch. This hybrid species has the potential to seriously pollute the gene pool. Furthermore, it exhibits aggressive territorial behavior, sometimes launching boulders at young Armored Cannon Beetles, which has driven the latter species to the verge of extinction.”Louie's Notes
“Drop into boiling water, and let it cook until the shell turns red. Remove from the pot and peel. Sprinkle the drained meat with rock salt.”

“頭頂部にある角状の吸気口から空気を吸い込み、餌として体内に溜め込んでいた岩石を、ひと塊にして吐き出す甲虫。縄張り意識が強く、自分と食性が同じヤマトイシツツミの幼虫を攻撃する。
特徴 その1 岩を吐き出す
- 岩を吐くのがオスで、メスは成虫になると上の口が閉じ、岩を吐かなくなる。
- (Image text:

Translation
“A beetle that sucks in air through the horn-shaped blowhole on the top of its head, and spits out rocks it has stored in its body as food in a single mass. It is highly territorial and attacks Armored Cannon Beetle larvae, which share its feeding habit.
Feature #1: Spitting out rocks
- The male spits out rocks, while the female's upper mouth closes as an adult and she no longer spits out rocks.
- (Image text:
- "It uses compressed air to spit out rocks with great force"
- "In addition to using them to attack, it lays its eggs on them to feed its larvae")
Feature #2: Spiracles and waste heat
- If something gets stuck in the blowhole, it becomes unable to spit out rocks, and heat builds up inside the body.
- (Image text: "It opens its shell and expels heat through its spiracles")
Feature #3: Non-native species
- In recent years, it has been expanding its habitat, which is affecting the ecosystem.
- (Image text:
- "Granitus ferrous (non-native species)"
- "Granitus chukkulinae (native species)")”
