The Burrowing Snagret (ヘビガラス?, lit.: "Snake Crow") is a boss in the Pikmin games. It appears to be a combination of a bird and a snake, and is a member of the Snavian family. It has low health for a boss, but it often appears in groups. In Pikmin 4, fledgling versions called Downy Snagrets can be found.

Behavior
When idle, the Burrowing Snagret will stay hidden underground; only emerging once Pikmin or a leader enters its area. Once Pikmin or a leader enter its area, it will emerge from the ground and will begin to attack. In Pikmin and Pikmin 2, Snagrets usually emerge from the ground extremely quickly, although they infrequently get stuck in the ground, significantly stalling their accents and leaving their heads wide open to Pikmin attacks, especially by swarming in Pikmin. In Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, they will always struggle to unburrow themselves. It does this by first emerging, and then shaking its head, before fully appearing. If the leader and/or Pikmin leave its territory, it will burrow itself back into the ground until its territory is once again approached. If the leader or Pikmin are in its territory, but far away enough that it cannot attack, it will stay above ground and keep watch.
The Burrowing Snagret's main method of attack is to quickly peck nearby Pikmin and grab them. It will attack any Pikmin its beak can reach, giving the creature a deceptively large range of attack. Once Pikmin are caught in its beak it will swallow them soon after, although Snagrets prefer to grab other currently reachable Pikmin before doing so, allowing it to only swallow after multiple consecutive pecks. In the first two games, the Snagret is able to grab 3 Pikmin in its beak before having to swallow. In Pikmin 3, the Snagret will be able to grab 5 Pikmin before swallowing. In Pikmin 4, the Snagret will attack 3-4 Pikmin before it stops to swallow; although it will peck at the ground 5 times. Whilst it gets attacked in Pikmin and Pikmin 2, it rocks its head back and forth; In Pikmin, the amount of rocks it does depends on how many Pikmin are attacking it, while in Pikmin 2 it will always be four in a row, followed by an attack if any Pikmin are in range. In Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, it gains an additional attack. This attack has the Snagret stab its beak into the ground to attack the leader. If the leader is caught, the Snagret swallow them, damage them slightly, and then regurgitate them; although if it misses, it will slam its beak into the ground, leaving it immobile for a few seconds. If enough Pikmin are attacking its head, it will shake off all attackers before quickly burrowing itself back into the ground. In Pikmin, if a Snagret has Pikmin in its beak and is receiving heavy damage, it will sometimes re-burrow itself without swallowing, killing the ensnared Pikmin in the process. In Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, once a Burrowing Snagret receives enough damage, it begins to lose the feathers off of its head, until it becomes wholly featherless.
In Pikmin, In Pikmin, Burrowing Snagrets can be harmed by bomb rocks and eat bomb rock holding Yellow Pikmin the same as it eats any other Pikmin; although bomb rock explosions deal miniscule damage. In Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, they are only capable of eating one bomb rock at a time, which take out a third of its health. Additionally, they only grab the bomb rock, leaving whoever was holding it unscathed. Once the bomb rock is eaten, its stomach expands due to the explosion before it quickly burrows itself back into the ground. This is also the case for mines and trackonators.
The Burrowing Snagret has had a different death animation in each game. In Pikmin, it will scream into the sky before falling onto the floor in the direction it was facing. Its body will then lightly and harmlessly explode, leaving a trail of dust and feathers, starting from its head and leading to the end of its exposed torso. In its place, there will be a randomly colored five-pellet where its head was and seven randomly colored one-pellets where its torso once was; although the last one pellet, created by the explosion of the last exposed bit of the Snagret's body, will instead be the Geiger Counter in the case of the Snagret holding the ship part in The Forest of Hope. In Pikmin 2, the Snagret goes limp the same way as it does in Pikmin, however the explosion is more violent (though still ultimately harmless) and is limited to its torso, starting at the bottom and ending at its top. The explosion's force causes the Snagret's head to briefly go airborne, before crashing back down to the ground as a collectable corpse. While exploding, scales and, in the case of its top body segment, a mess of feathers, fly out of the exploding creature before quickly disappearing. In addition, the scream it does in Pikmin 2 echoes far more compared to its scream in Pikmin, making it appear louder. In Pikmin 3, the Snagret will jump out of the ground and scream, revealing a single avian leg, before falling on to the floor, leaving its whole body behind to be dragged by the head by the Pikmin. The same behavior happens in Pikmin 4, except its body coils up after it jumps out of the ground instead of lying straight, allowing the Pikmin to more easily carry it.
Locations
In Pikmin, 3 Burrowing Snagrets are found in the same area of The Forest of Hope, one of which contains the Geiger Counter. One is also found in The Final Trial in Challenge Mode, blocked by a white reinforced wall.
In Pikmin 2, a Burrowing Snagret is the main boss of the White Flower Garden, found on sublevel 5 (this one contains the Five-man Napsack). Many are encountered throughout the Snagret Hole, with one even near the entrance. On sublevel 3 of the Snagret Hole, one contains the Meat Satchel and another on sublevel 6 contains the Triple Sugar Threat. Another is on sublevel 4 of the Hole of Heroes, and yet another guards the Pink Menace in the Valley of Repose. Burrowing Snagrets are the most common boss-class enemies in Pikmin 2, having eight different in-game occurrences outside of Challenge Mode.
In Pikmin 3, there is a Burrowing Snagret in the Twilight River, holding the Insect Condo. There are also Burrowing Snagrets in Mission Mode levels, including Silver Lake, Tropical Wilds Remix, Garden of Hope Remix (which contains 4 of them), Twilight River Remix, and Shaded Garden Remix. In the Side Stories, 1 can be found in Looking for Louie. In Bingo Battle, 1 can be found in layout C of Arid Metropolis, and 2 can be found in layout B of Parched Brook.
In Pikmin 4, a Burrowing Snagret is present in the Blossoming Arcadia, where it holds the Brush of Wisdom. Another one is present in the same area in Olimar's Shipwreck Tale, but in a different section and instead holding an Extraordinary Bolt. A group of three Burrowing Snagrets appear on sublevel 3 of the Cavern for a King. One of the Snagrets holds the Talisman of Life (Phoenix).
Strategy
The following article or section contains guides. |
Pikmin
In Pikmin, they are extremely hard to beat without losing Pikmin if thrown at the head, as they have very high health and are quite large. Its striking speed will also allow it to eat some Pikmin and burrow back into the ground before any significant damage is done. When trying to defeat it in the first game, the best strategy is to throw Red Pikmin at its head while it's emerging from the ground as fast as you can, then whistling in your Pikmin right before it shakes them off to prevent them being eaten. Another effective, but risky way is to swarm the head in hopes of making the Burrowing Snagret retreat underground. Try to run directly to the Snagret closest to the ledge on the side of the ship to avoid the other two Snagrets and collect the Geiger Counter more easily.
Pikmin 2
In Pikmin 2, defeating one is an easier task because of its lower health; even so, it remains a good idea to use Purple Pikmin. It is easy to take advantage of the fact that sometimes, the beast will not fully emerge from the ground, getting stuck for some time. It is best to attack the Snagret then, as it is possible to defeat it without losing any Pikmin. With quick and accurate throwing, however, this is not necessary to secure the battle. Throw many Pikmin at its head as soon as possible and the Snagret should die before managing to swallow any of the Pikmin that it may have snatched up from the ground. In Pikmin 2, attacks to the body will only cause 10% normal damage. Statistically, both in Pikmin and Pikmin 2, every time the creature emerges it has a 40% chance of getting stuck.[1] That said, a Burrowing Snagret will never get stuck the first time of the day that it unburrows, in Pikmin.
In the first two games, if it burrows back underground without swallowing Pikmin it has caught, these Pikmin will die. In the first game, it was the root of many glitches involving the counter.
Pikmin 3
In Pikmin 3, the health is even lower, and Winged Pikmin can be charged directly onto its head to defeat it quickly, especially under the effects of an ultra-spicy spray. The boss can only eat Pikmin on the ground. It is helpful to stay away from its beak, as if it eats a leader, it can take a while to get all your Pikmin back into your squad.
It is not possible to defeat the Burrowing Snagret with leaders alone.
Pikmin 4
In Pikmin 4, it has the same health as in Pikmin 3, but comes out of the ground much slower. The Snagrets head will take a moment to shake its head a bit and then it will come out of the ground. An easy way to beat it is to simply use Oatchi to rush and attach all of your Pikmin on its head to deal massive damage (if you don't want to use Oatchi or can't, then you can charge instead). This will either kill it immediately or cause it to immediately retreat underground. Without Oatchi, the Snagret can be beaten the same way as it would be in Pikmin 3.

Olimar's notes (Pikmin 4)
“The majority of Snagret species lie in wait to ambush and capture prey, with a body type perfectly adapted to such sudden strikes. It violently attacks small, surface-dwelling insects.
Distributed across a relatively wide range, subspecies of Snagret suited to the varying soil conditions have emerged, making the Snagret the most geographically represented species besides the Bulborb.
Visually resembling the Burrowing Snagret is the Burrowing Snarrow, the range of which partially overlaps with the Snagret's range. While the two may appear similar, when pulled from the ground, they can be distinguished by the presence or absence of tail and wing markings.”Louie's notes (Pikmin 4)

Pikmin Nintendo Power Booklet description
“Snagrets usually hang out in groups of three, and their agile beaks are capable of plucking up devastating numbers of Pikmin. When attacked, they temporarily retreat underground.”

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide
“As its name implies, the Burrowing Snagret spends most of its time underground. When it senses potential prey, however, this creature emerges and uses its powerful beak to snatch up any victims in range. The Burrowing Snagret's body it protected by scales, making the creature's head its only weak point.
Each time a Burrowing Snagret emerges from the ground, there's a brief pause just after the creature's beak appears -- this brief window is the only opportunity you'll have to execute a successful charge. If your Pikmin can latch onto the creature's head before it's fully exposed, they'll be able to do a significant amount of damage in a very short time. Winged Pikmin can charge the Burrowing Snagret's head whenever it's above ground, but you'll need a large squad to compensate for the Winged Pikmin's low attack power.
If you can't seem to land a successful charge attack, flank the Burrowing Snagret's side and toss your Pikmin directly onto the creature's head. This method makes it fairly difficult to keep your squad out of harm's way, but it does allow you to deal reliable damage for the duration of the battle.”Pikmin Garden

“A foot-long bird doesn't sound all that large, but when you're the size of a Pikmin, a foot is massive! This member of the avian[sic] family will emerge from underground, hunting for Pikmin, its favorite snack. Act fast—or this bird of prey will prey on your poor Pikmin! | |||

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Assist Trophy
The Burrowing Snagret appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy, in its Pikmin 3 design. When summoned, it will emerge from the floor (even go-through platforms) near an opponent, and will idle for a second before unleashing three quick stabs towards the opponent. It can peck at the ground or the air. It will then bury back down and reemerge elsewhere, repeating the process. Like other Assist Trophies, it can be KO'd if it takes enough damage. It makes the Burrowing Snagret death sound from Pikmin when it emerges, and also when it is KO'd.[2]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit
The Burrowing Snagret also appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Primary Spirit. It can be obtained by fighting a Charizard in the Spirit Board, buying it from the Shop or by being Summoned. It lowers the fighter's speed.

Naming
- See more: Snavian family#Naming.
- Common name: Burrowing Snagret. "Burrowing" refers to its habit of burrowing and remaining underground until prey approach. Although the Pileated Snagret also burrows, it is a less important characteristic. "Snagret" is a portmanteau of either "snake" or "snag" and "egret".
- Japanese nickname: ヘビガラス?, lit.: "Snake Crow".
- Japanese name: オジロへビガラス?, lit.: "White-tailed Snake Crow". The name refers to the white tail feathers that grow when the Snagret's tail scales are removed, as mentioned in the Downy Snagret's notes on the Pikmin Garden website.
- Scientific name: Shiropedes anacondii. Anacondii is similar to "anaconda", a dangerous type of constricting snake.
- Internal names: The internal name in Pikmin is quite straightforward –
snake
– and in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, it is the same as its translated Japanese name, snakecrow
. - Prerelease: None.

Trivia
- The Burrowing Snagret can be seen in a pre-release video of Pikmin, where it appears to have a light or white body. This most likely originates from its Japanese name which means "White-tailed snake crow".
- The Burrowing Snagret aboveground in the Awakening Wood has been reported to sometimes spawn with only 750 health. The cause of this is unknown. [1]
- In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Burrowing Snagret trophies contain a few mistakes.
- The Brawl trophy states that no one has ever seen a Burrowing Snagret's tail before. However, Olimar states in the Piklopedia that the Burrowing Snagret and Snarrow can both be distinguished by the markings on their tails, implying that Olimar has seen its full body, or at least its tail. Pikmin 3 further confuses the matter by showing that the Snarget has no tail, as seen by defeating it.
- The Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy erroneously omits Pikmin 2 from the list of games. The Pikmin trophies in Smash 4 always list the first two games, except for this one. In addition, the Snagret is more common in Pikmin 2 compared to Pikmin 3, especially considering it appears the most in the second game's story mode, and only once in the third game's. This makes the Pikmin 2 omission a mystery.
- In the US version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the description claims that the creature belongs to the "avian" family, instead of the snavian family.
- The Burrowing Snagret is the most commonly fought boss in the first 3 games, as it can be fought 4 times in the first game, 9 times in the second game, and 10 times in the third game. In Pikmin 4, it is fought 5 times, beat out by the Emperor Bulblax at 6.
- If one only counts story mode, then this title is lost in Pikmin 3, as it is only encountered once. It is also fought in the Pikmin 3 Deluxe Side Stories mode once.
- The enemy reel mistakenly states that its body is lined with feathers.
- This mistake is not present in the Japanese version, where the method given for distinguishing the Burrowing Snagret from the Burrowing Snarrow is the same that would later be described in the Piklopedia.
- In Pikmin, internally there are actually two different Burrowing Snagret bosses. Both variants are used and are nearly identical, with the only difference between the two are that the collision area that causes them to rise from the ground is a different shape, with one having a spherical fight area, while the other has a box-shaped fight area.
- In Pikmin 2, this enemy and the Pileated Snagret shake the least when damaged, meaning their model stretches the least amount of all enemies.
- It is the only boss that appears in every mainline Pikmin game.
- In Pikmin 2, when the creature dies, its body shrinks while the head remains the same size. With the closest zoom settings, it is possible to see its small body in-game. The same happens with the Pileated Snagret, Toady Bloyster, and Ranging Bloyster.
- The Burrowing Snagret lays eggs, as seen in Pikmin 4 where Downy Snagrets can be found inside nectar eggs, and to a lesser extent, the nest on sublevel 5 of the White Flower Garden, and the eggs found there.
- In Pikmin 2, The Burrowing Snagret's full eating animation can't ever be seen properly in the Piklopedia, due to the carrots exploding and disappearing instantly upon being pecked by the Snagret.
