In Pikmin 1, these creatures slept, (maybe because of an inactive activity season) or hibernated, hence the name and bloodshot eyes when they woke up. They had about 1.5 times the health of a red bulborb. Their red spots constantly grew and shrank, even after death. You may have had a hard time making your Pikmin carry this creature due to a glitch. Bulbears were once worth 15 pikmin sprouts.

Spotty Bulbears are creatures in both Pikmin games that resemble Red Bulborbs with different looking mouths. They are black with red spots, different from Red Bulborbs, who are red with white spots. The large mouth allows it to eat more pikmin. Sometimes, a spotty bulbear might be followed by numerous Dwarf Bulbears. They follow this parent/guardian since they are juveniles and they obviously would need help finding nourishment. This creature also has the ability to move literally anywhere in the field/cave that you are in, they may even enter the vincinity of your base. It is best to try using sprays, or using the simple bulborb killing strategy (purple Pikmin) to defeat them. The juveniles may also hinder you when you ambush the bulbear so be cautious. If you do defeat the creature, and its body is still there, it will try to revive itself. After what may be minutes, it may come back to conciousness, and you will have to go to the menial task of beating it again, so try to put it in an Onion/the Ship's pod if you can. The only on-land area where they are found is the Perplexing Pool. (Pikmin 2)

Olimar's Notes

A midsize subspecies within the grub-dog family, the Spotty Bulbear's unique feeding habits set it apart from other grub-dogs. The Spotty Bulbear patrols a set path searching for prey, instead of passively feeding on creatures that wander into a limited territorial range. When entering Bulbear habitat, it is wise to proceed with extreme caution until the Bulbear's patrol path can be clearly identified.

Louie's Notes

For an unrivaled green curry, peel away the Spotty Bulbear's skin, pulverize the juicy innards, and stew until curiously fragrant.

How to Kill

Pikmin 1

The exact same strategy for the Red Bulborb is effective here, but take care of the Bulbear's increased health. A large group of reds or three bomb-rocks will do it in.

Pikmin 2

Spotty Bulbears do not sleep here and are constantly roaming the map, making a surprise attack impossible. It is possible to trick the Bulbear into attacking and missing, allowing you access to its backside, but they frequently have Dwarf Bulbears following it, making this tactic risky. If you have purple Pikmin with you, it makes the battle easier as they can injure and stun the adult and children, but with other colors it may be wise to use an Ultra-Bitter Spray. Good luck dealing with three of these things at the Subterranean Lair! A surprisingly good strategy is to also turn the case around and hunt the Bulbear itself before it can pick up any Dwarfs and then stun and attack it.
