Jumbo Bulborbs will either patrol an area or hide within vegetation and wait to ambush nearby prey. Like most Bulborbs, they have a defined territory, and will disengage a chase to return to it if it is far away enough. Due to their size, they are not particularly good at hiding - in fact, it is usually quite obvious, as their eye stalks and parts of their snout can be seen poking out from the foliage.

Once they notice prey, they become aggressive and will run towards nearby Pikmin, Leaders, and Oatchi, lunging at them three times with a scream. If it manages to catch any Pikmin, up to a max of 25 per attack, it will stand up and eat them; otherwise, it will trip and then try again. If there are a lot of Pikmin attacking it at once, it will shake them off and then immediately lunge 5 times.

The Jumbo Bulborb (ジャンボチャッピー?, lit.: "Jumbo Chappy") is a massive enemy found in Pikmin 4.

As their name implies, Jumbo Bulborbs are gigantic Bulborbs, dwarfing almost all other Grub-dogs and rivalling the Emperor Bulblax in terms of sheer size. Outside of the size difference, they appear identical to normal Bulborbs. Jumbo Bulborbs can be found belowground and during night expeditions.

Unlike most Bulborbs, they are never found sleeping. Instead, they are usually found actively wandering their territory in search of prey, similar to Spotty Bulbears. Additionally, they sometimes can be found hiding in foliage, waiting to ambush passing Pikmin.

Behavior[edit]

Jumbo Bulborbs will either patrol an area or hide within vegetation and wait to ambush nearby prey. Like most Bulborbs, they have a defined territory, and will disengage a chase to return to it if it is far away enough. Due to their size, they are not particularly good at hiding - in fact, it is usually quite obvious, as their eye stalks and parts of their snout can be seen poking out from the foliage.

Once they notice prey, they become aggressive and will run towards nearby Pikmin, Leaders, and Oatchi, lunging at them three times with a scream. If it manages to catch any Pikmin, up to a max of 15 per attack, it will stand up and eat them; otherwise, it will trip and then try again. If there are a lot of Pikmin attacking it at once, it will shake them off and then immediately lunge 3 times.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Pikmin[edit]

Jumbo Bulborbs that are actively wandering should be treated similarly to Spotty Bulbears, although note that they have a noticeably higher amount of health compared to them.

Rushing into its back with a large squad of Pikmin on Oatchi can be a very effective opener, should one be approached undetected. It is especially easy to sneak up behind one if it is hiding, as they don't have particularly good spatial awareness. If Oatchi's Rush has been sufficiently upgraded to stun the Jumbo Bulborb, it is entirely possible, with a sufficiently large Pikmin army, to kill it before it can react.

If detected, or in a particularly bad position, locking onto it's back and attempting to circle behind it while throwing Pikmin is another good, if risky, strategy. Red and Purple Pikmin are useful due to their higher attack power. Note that, when it shakes Pikmin off, that it tends to buck them directly in front of it - perfectly positioned to be grabbed by its lunge, which it often immediately retaliates with. To avoid this fate, you could use Rock Pikmin. Due to the fact that they never latch on at all, this creature's flailing is practically useless against an army of them, making the Jumbo Bulborb's lengthy attack the perfect opening for an assault from Rock Pikmin, where other types would simply bounce off.

If your army is on the small side, lacking the power to justify a frontal assault or to instantly kill it with an ambush, kiting its attack - that is, prompting it to lunge and dodging the attack - will offer an opportunity to counter with Oatchi's Rush.

Leaders[edit]

Punching a Jumbo Bulborb to death is highly impractical, both due to the weak power of the punch, and its high health. Should one wish to take one on without risking Pikmin lives, sending Oatchi to do the task is recommended. If he has been sufficiently upgraded, it is entirely possible for him to take out a Jumbo Bulborb on his own. Ensure Oatchi is upgraded with his Pup Air Armor++, Pup Tuff Stuff++, and has a fully trained Big Chomp, or he will likely be knocked out by the Bulborb's powerful attacks.

Notes[edit]

Dalmo's notes[edit]

Jumbo. That word sets an image in your mind. Being larger than others of its species means its heart is proportionately bigger too, so its devotion to its family also grows! When it savagely bites, it's only doing so to protect those it cares about. The most loving critters can sometimes also be the fiercest.

Olimar's notes[edit]

During reproduction, after an egg is fertilized by a sperm, any excess chromosomes are usually discarded through a process called meiosis. But occasionally, this process fails to occur, and a Bulborb individual will develop irregularly due to this chromosomal abnormality.

Specimens like this one are stronger than the average Bulborb and can exhibit more aggressive behavior. However, they are not able to procreate, as they will never reach sexual maturity.

Louie's notes[edit]

It's a large creature, but the meat is tender and flavorful. It's impossible to eat in one sitting, so store some portions for later. Coat the fattier meat in cooking oil and freeze. Leaner cuts should be smoked.

Trivia[edit]

  • An abnormally large Bulborb is also present as a boss in Hey! Pikmin, with similar behavior of hiding in foliage and charging at Pikmin. However, it is unclear if it has the same condition as the Jumbo Bulborb.
  • Both Olimar's notes, and the creature's scientific name suggest that Jumbo Bulborbs suffer from some variant of polyploidy, a condition usually stemming either from failed meiosis during the production of gametes or from an egg being fertilized by multiple sperm at once. Increased size and infertility are known side effects of this condition, both traits Jumbo Bulborbs display.
