The Burgeoning Spiderwort (ピキノツユクサ) is a plant in p2, p3, and p4 that produces berries with the nectar that is needed to make ultra-spicy- and ultra-bitter sprays. They are found in the Awakening Wood, Perplexing Pool, and Wistful Wild in Pikmin 2, the Tropical Wilds, Garden of Hope, Distant Tundra, and Twilight River areas in Pikmin 3, and all areas in Pikmin 4.
In Pikmin 2, Ravenous Whiskerpillars can appear in their vicinity, as well as some type of mold that shows up and keeps the plants from growing. This can be destroyed sufficiently quickly with a medium-large group of Pikmin.
In Pikmin 2, | Each plant can have up to five berries at once. In Pikmin 2, some only contain red berries, some only purple berries, and some a mix of the two. In later games, since the ultra-bitter spray does not return, only the red-berry Burgeoning Spiderworts exist.

| |||

| |||

Pikmin that fall off from the top of the plant will fall in a random direction, and if they land near the base of the stem, they will climb back up and repeat the process. Otherwise, they will become idle or follow the leader, if he is nearby. This means that leaving Pikmin behind to work on the next batch of berries is not very effective, since the Pikmin will not climb up the plant automatically, and the ones that do will likely end up falling out of the stem's reach eventually. In addition, because Pikmin will not drop down of the plant until all the berries are gone, the player runs the risk of a berry falling down, no Pikmin coming down to get it for a while, and the berry disappearing. | Pikmin that fall off from the top of the plant will fall in a random direction, and if they land near the base of the stem, they will climb back up and repeat the process. It is worth noting that the timer that ticks down how long until the next berry shows up will keep ticking if the player is in a treasure collection cutscene.
When the plant is born, i.e. when it is free to start growing because the nearby [[ | When the plant is born, i.e. when it is free to start growing because the nearby mold has been destroyed, it blooms straight into a tall stalk, with the end facing straight up. It stays in this first stage for around 30 seconds, after which it blooms into the next stage, where it is a bit taller, and the end faces an angle. Finally, after 20 seconds, it blooms into its final stage, with the end of the stalk pointing forward. When it does this, it also becomes populated with all five berries, and if there are Ravenous Whiskerpillars around, this is when they show up and go for the plant. If at the start of the day, the plant can grow uninhibited (because there is no mold around), it starts in the first stage right away.
The moment the Spiderwort grows its berries after entering the final stage, a countdown of 120 seconds starts. When this time reaches 0, the countdown restarts, and if it's not already full, the plant regrows all of its berries at once. This cycle repeats until the end of the day. When Pikmin attack the Burgeoning Spiderwort, they seem to slow down the time by a bit, so the longer the Pikmin take to harvest the plant, the longer it will take until the next recharge. | The moment the Spiderwort grows its berries after entering the final stage, a countdown of 120 seconds starts. === Pikmin 4 ===
Burgeoning Spiderworts are taller than they are in previous games, as most Pikmin types can only barely reach the bottom of the berry cluster, and Purple Pikmin cannot hit the berries at all. The lock-on system will only target the berries when Winged Pikmin or Yellow Pikmin are selected. However, the berries can be weighed down significantly to be more easily hit. Purple Pikmin are considered 10 times heavier for this feature and it takes the weight of around 50 standard Pikmin to weigh the berries down all the way.
Rock Pikmin can now only pick one berry at a time when directly thrown at a berry cluster. Due to the way Rock Pikmin attack targets they can latch onto, they will perform a single attack on the berries that either immediately picks a single berry or deals no damage at all at random, then drop from the Spiderwort immediately. Despite the chance of missing, this makes them by far the most efficient berry-pickers, often out-pacing the speed of carrying offered by small squads of White Pikmin and Winged Pikmin.
Berries now act as their own individual objects rather than respawning at the Spiderwort, as when a Pikmin is interrupted while carrying a berry, it will just drop the berry. Like several treasures, the berries have an advanced physics system and can roll around. There can only be 50 berries in an area at a given time. If a Burgeoning Spiderwort grows some more, older berries will disappear.
If Oatchi rushes a Spiderwort, all its berries are knocked loose at once. Oatchi cannot otherwise attack Burgeoning Spiderworts, but he can carry berries.

The two Burgeoning Spiderworts are located directly next to Foot of the Stairs, located on the staircase. A tunnel can be found by nearby vases that leads up the first step, although a Gildemandwee hides inside a vase. The other Spiderwort, sitting on the second step, requires riding a rail from the kitchen counter to access. A rope can be pushed down to create a direct shortcut between the it and the base.

==== Giant's Hearth ====
The two Burgeoning Spiderworts are found next to the stage's central crystal wall. Its close proximity to Abandoned Throne and The Central Flame bases provide quick and easy access to the berries at any time, provided the nearby Mama Sheargrubs and Bulbears are defeated.

| |||
A single Burgeoning Spiderwort can be found on top of the Climbing Wall, right next to the Golden Vaulting Table, surrounded by Honeywisps. With its close proximity to The Maple Bridge base, this plant is relatively safe and easy to collect as long as the bridge is built. If the bridge isn't built, Pikmin will be far more likely to carry the berries into danger.
Two more Spiderworts are located directly outside of Cavern for a King, across a pool of Mud, covered in Sticky mold, and guarded by two Bogswallows. After defeating the enemies, these are best collected either by freezing the mud or by using Winged Pikmin, helped by a nearby geyser that lands all Pikmin right next to The Maple Bridge base.

== Mold == | |||
| |||
Some Burgeoning Spiderworts are occasionally found in patches of mold, which prevents their growth until the mold has been destroyed. This mold appears as a bulbous structure lurking where Burgeoning Spiderworts had once grown. This fungus is destructible, so if spotted, one should take a medium-large group of Pikmin to the area and have them attack it. Soon enough, the mold and its thread-like hyphae will slowly disappear, allowing the Burgeoning Spiderwort and any Pellet Posies that were there to grow once again. This is not harmful to the Pikmin, only to the plant. Mold will form on its own if a Spiderwort plant is not tended to, excessive Ravenous Whiskerpillar activity will cause the mold to grow back and cover the plants.
In Pikmin 4, a different substance named sticky mold is also used to suffocate Burgeoning Spiderworts, along with treasures and Candypop Buds.
=== Locations === | |||
In the Awakening Wood, starting on day 7, there is a large piece of mold near the landing site, where two Spiderworts grow. It seals away both of the plants, but when eliminated, they will grow back.
In the Perplexing Pool, there are two of them across from the landing site (near the location of the Gherkin Gate). There is a Swooping Snitchbug there as well as a Fiery Blowhog, so it is advised to defeat them first.
In the Wistful Wild, there are three patches of mold in a large clearing near the drainable lake which coincides with The Final Trial's landing area in Pikmin. Each one covers its own berry plant, so it may take a while to get rid of them all.

The Burgeoning Spiderwort (ピキノツユクサ?, lit.: "Piki Asiatic Dayflower") is a plant in Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3, and Pikmin 4 that produces berries with the nectar that is needed to make ultra-spicy- and ultra-bitter sprays.
Each plant can have up to five berries at once. In Pikmin 2, some only contain red berries, some only purple berries, and some a mix of the two. In later games, since the ultra-bitter spray does not return, only the red-berry Burgeoning Spiderworts exist.
Notes[edit]
Dalmo's notes[edit]
Olimar's notes[edit]
“Like the Pellet Posy, while nectar is its primary source of nutrients, this Burgeoning Spiderwort produces fruit with high amounts of a super-spicy compound. Both this plant and the Pellet Posy are part of the Pellet weed family, but the Spiderwort does not crystallize nectar because of the different fungi that parasitize its roots. Instead, it produces alkaloids that contain those extra-piquant compounds. The alkaloids are then extracted and collected by way of the plant's fruit.
Whether or not a plant produces super-spicy or super-sweet compounds seems to depend on the type of fungus with which it interacts.”Louie's notes[edit]
Berry[edit]
The berries are small, tiny fruits that come in red or purple based on the nectar. They grow on top of the Burgeoning Spiderwort, and can be knocked down after the plant has been attacked enough. Once on the ground, a Pikmin can pick it up, and deliver it to the ship. 10 berries of a given type are necessary in order to concoct one additional spray.
New berries will show up after some time, which depends on the game. After a berry has been dropped, it can vanish, but the rules for this also depend on the game. Both of these points are elaborated below.
If there are Ravenous Whiskerpillars nearby, they will climb up the plant and begin eating the berries, one by one.
Gameplay mechanics[edit]
In all games, Pikmin that are ordered to harvest a Burgeoning Spiderwort will go up to the base of the stem, climb up, and once they reach the berries, they will begin pummeling. Periodically, as damage is caused, a berry drops down.
Each game also has more specific rules about how the Pikmin, the plants, and the berries behave.
Pikmin 2[edit]
In this game, berries can only remain on the ground for 40 seconds, after which they burst and disappear. Having a Pikmin carry them freezes this timer, but does not reset it. It is worth noting that the timer that ticks down how long until the next berry shows up will keep ticking if the player is in a treasure collection cutscene.[1]
When the plant is born, i.e. when it is free to start growing because the nearby mold has been destroyed, it blooms straight into a tall stalk, with the end facing straight up.
When Pikmin attack the Burgeoning Spiderwort, they seem to slow down the time by a bit, so the longer the Pikmin take to harvest the plant, the longer it will take until the next recharge.[2]
When a leader is near a Burgeoning Spiderwort plant, an additional instrument is added to the area's music, it being slow strings or a pad synthesizer. This music will persist as long as a leader is near a Burgeoning Spiderwort or one of its berries.
Pikmin 3[edit]
An idle Spiderwort has all of its berries, and does nothing special. The second any berry detaches from the plant, a countdown of 60 seconds starts, and once it reaches 0, the plant will regenerate all of its berries at once.
In this game, when the Pikmin are pummeling away at cluster, one Pikmin will drop whenever a berry does, in order to pick it up right away. This makes the berry harvesting faster than in Pikmin 2, where the player has to wait for all the Pikmin to drop off at the end of the attack, or issue some Pikmin to the berry manually. When the Pikmin fall off of an empty Spiderwort, they will idle next to the plant, but will not climb back up unless there are new berries to be harvested. This allows the player to keep a few Pikmin busy with the plant throughout the day and be assured that they will continuously harvest it. On top of that, unlike Pikmin 2, a Pikmin that delivers a berry will return to the Burgeoning Spiderwort on its own.
If a bomb rock explodes near a Spiderwort, or a Rock Pikmin is thrown directly at the center of the berries, then all of the plant's berries will drop at once.
Any berry that is left on the floor for 30 seconds will disappear. If a Pikmin carrying a berry is whistled, it will drop the berry, which will also cause it to disappear.
Pikmin 4[edit]
If a Burgeoning Spiderwort grows some more, older berries will disappear.[3]
If Oatchi rushes a Spiderwort, all its berries are knocked loose at once. Oatchi cannot otherwise attack Burgeoning Spiderworts, but he can carry berries.
Locations[edit]
Pikmin 2[edit]
Awakening Wood[edit]
The Awakening Wood has more Spiderworts in the region than any other area in the game. There are two Spiderworts a short walk away from the landing site, which both produce red berries. In this area, two Ravenous Whiskerpillars appear. Mold may also appear here. Due to the fact that there are two of them, and that they are so close to the landing site, this is possibly the best berry-harvesting place in Pikmin 2. A player can gain about three or four sprays a day if they dedicate the day to berry harvesting.
There is one next to the area where the Iridescent Flint Beetle is, near the Pilgrim Bulb but it does not appear until day 11. It is on a ledge and only produces red berries.
There is a final one near the entrance to the Bulblax Kingdom. To make reaching it easier, Blue Pikmin can be used to destroy the water gate behind the landing area. Then, by having them attack the clog there, the water will disappear. This Burgeoning Spiderwort only produces purple berries.
Perplexing Pool[edit]
On the Perplexing Pool, there are two near the Gherkin Gate, both of which produce purple berries. A Fiery Blowhog and Swooping Snitchbug hang around here, as well as three Ravenous Whiskerpillars and the occasional mold.
Beyond the entrance of the Citadel of Spiders, there is a plant stemming from the water, so only Blue Pikmin can attack it. Only red berries are produced from it.
Wistful Wild[edit]
Near the path to the entrance of the Hole of Heroes in the Wistful Wild, there is a large field with the most number of Spiderworts known in one spot: three. All of them produce both kinds of berries, with each berry being decided at random. There are three Whiskerpillars here and a mold will cover each individual plant. A Fiery Blowhog and a Watery Blowhog keep watch over the area.
Pikmin 3[edit]
Tropical Wilds[edit]
There is a single Burgeoning Spiderwort plant located in the very center of the Tropical Wilds. It is behind the landing site and just beyond the small body of water that holds a Cupid's Grenade. Once the nearby reinforced wall is blown down and the nearby bridge built, Pikmin will be able to more easily take these berries to the ship.
Garden of Hope[edit]
There are two Burgeoning Spiderworts in the Garden of Hope. The first is fairly close to the S.S. Drake and Onion. Unfortunately, it is in a part of the Garden of Hope that can only be accessed after the player rescues Louie. It is across a brown bridge, which must be built by the Pikmin, being guarded by a Waddlepus. It is one of the best places to get Spiderwort berries from, because there are no enemies between it and the Drake, aside from the Waddlepus.
The second one is located even closer to the base, but only appears when the Data Glutton has been retrieved, and will disappear the day after the player has obtained Blue Pikmin. It is located behind the landing site, near a pond with a Toady Bloyster, Skitter Leaves, and a pair of Yellow Wollywogs. Once these threats have been cleared, Pikmin can quickly gather berries en masse.
Distant Tundra[edit]
There are two Burgeoning Spiderworts in the Distant Tundra. The first one is located near the exit to the Vehemoth Phosbat's cave and where the Dodge Whistle upgrade can be found. After clearing the area of the nearby Joustmite and Swooping Snitchbugs, Pikmin can harvest these safely. This plant will not appear until the day after Alph and Brittany have been reunited in this area.
The other Spiderwort is located on top of the pot where a pile of bridge fragments are initially located. As such, this plant will not appear until the day after Alph and Brittany are reunited. If the player uses Winged Pikmin to harvest it, they can fly over the river, safely bypassing the Joustmites sleeping below.
Twilight River[edit]
There are two Burgeoning Spiderworts in the Twilight River. The first one is located just across the river behind the Drake and behind an electric gate. Once the nearby Yellow Wollywogs have been dealt with, Pikmin can harvest these safely. Oddly, Winged Pikmin take the lily pads back to the Drake, even though they can clearly fly over the river.
The second one is located right at the entrance of the area's second outdoors segment. There is a nearby Arachnode, although it should not be much trouble if the player uses any type other than Winged Pikmin to harvest the berries. It is also highly recommended the player has Pikmin move the nearby box so they can have a much easier route back and forth between the berries and the Onion.

Sun-Speckled Terrace[edit]
There are two Burgeoning Spiderworts in the area, which are located across the body of water near the Rugged Scaffold base. One is located on the lower ledge near the Geyser and the other one is located just above the Climbing wall. The best way to gather the berries here would be to either freeze the water with Ice Pikmin or Ice Blasts, or use Blue Pikmin.
Blossoming Arcadia[edit]
The two Burgeoning Spiderworts can be found on a hill next to the Sunwashed Plateau base, protected by a Waddlequaff. Other than the lone enemy, these plants are minimally protected, providing clean access to more sprays.
Serene Shores[edit]
Two Burgeoning Spiderworts are located right next to the Water's Edge base, with no real complications for collection.
Hero's Hideaway[edit]
The two Burgeoning Spiderworts are located directly next to Foot of the Stairs, located on the staircase. A tunnel can be found by nearby vases that leads up the first step, although a Gildemandwee hides inside a vase. The other Spiderwort, sitting on the second step, requires riding a rail from the kitchen counter to access. A rope can be pushed down to create a direct shortcut between the it and the base.
Giant's Hearth[edit]
The two Burgeoning Spiderworts are found next to the stage's central crystal wall. Its close proximity to Abandoned Throne and The Central Flame bases provide quick and easy access to the berries at any time, provided the nearby Mama Sheargrubs and Bulbears are defeated.
Primordial Thicket[edit]
Mold[edit]
Locations[edit]

Trivia[edit]
- Despite there being no Burgeoning Spiderworts in the Valley of Repose, the musical data for the area does have a specified Spiderwort mix.[4]
- Burgeoning Spiderworts were planned to also be found in caves, as there are unused cave themes with Spiderwort mixes in the game files.[5]
- Olimar's notes on the Cupid's Grenade seem to be describing the Burgeoning Spiderwort, possibly implying that at some point it was planned to get its own Piklopedia entry.
