Wollywogs are a species of frog-like creatures found in both Pikmin games that live in the bowels of subterranean areas. As an adaptation to environments with little or no sunlight, they have lost most of their skin pigmentation, giving them an albino-like appearance. In the PAL version of New Play Control! Pikmin 2 they are known as "Wollyhops". They can jump much farther then their yellow cousins. Some consider it to be the most irritating enemy in to fight in both games, due to their exceptional ease of crushing large quantities of Pikmin. They have less defense than Yellow Wollywogs.
The Wollyhop (マロガエル; known as the Wollywog depending on the game and region) is a frog-like enemy found in subterranean areas in p1, p2, and p4. ==Strategy==
Pikmin
Swarm it with a large group of Pikmin. The more Pikmin are attacking at once, the more likely the Wollywog will be weighed down and unable to jump (50 or more will keep it grounded almost every time). If it does get airborne, call back the Pikmin and get them away from the Wollywog’s shadow (the area where it will land). Re-swarm when it lands. Note this strategy can cause the crushing glitch to occur. In reality, Pikmin only need to be touching the Wollywog in order to weigh it down.

An alternative method is to get two Yellow Pikmin and give each a bomb-rock. Throw an armed Yellow Pikmin into the Wollywog’s vicinity and the Wollywog will target the Pikmin. When it does, immediately call back the Pikmin and by the time it lands, the bomb-rock will explode next to it. Repeat once more to kill it. In the New Play Control! version of the game, as Pikmin no longer drops the bomb-rocks when whistled at, a bomb-holding Pikmin must be thrown close to the Wollywog while it is in the air so the Pikmin throws it while it is on the ground.

The alternative strategy mentioned for Pikmin 2 also works here, but it takes longer than swarming since throwing is slower in the first game.

Pikmin 2
Swarming is less effective here, so attack by repeatedly throwing Pikmin, preferably Purple Pikmin, onto its back. It appears to be easier to pin the Wollyhop to the ground here than in Pikmin, so it is in fact easier to kill. Once again, in the event that it does get off the ground, call the Pikmin back immediately and move them out of the way. An alternate strategy (if you don't have Purple Pikmin) is to use a group of about 10-20 Pikmin and throw all the Pikmin before the Wollyhop takes off. It should become airborne, and the moment it starts to land, recall the Pikmin. Because of the falling speeds of Pikmin and the Wollyhop, and the fact that Pikmin are invincible when airborne, this is a very viable strategy.

Pikmin 4
Ride on Oatchi and use a charge to send all of your Pikmin onto the Wollyhop, or continuously throw Rock Pikmin at it if the terrain is soft, but keep in mind strategies from the first two games work here too, as well as the Yellow Wollyhop strategies.

The Wollyhop (マロガエル?, lit.: "Maro Frog"; known as the Wollywog depending on the game and region) is a frog-like enemy found in subterranean areas in Pikmin, Pikmin 2, and Pikmin 4. As an adaptation to environments with little or no sunlight, Wollyhops have lost most of their skin pigmentation, giving them an albino-like appearance.

Note this strategy can cause the crushing glitch to occur. In reality, Pikmin only need to be touching the Wollywog in order to weigh it down.[2]

Pikmin 2[edit]

Pikmin 4[edit]

Ride on Oatchi and use a charge to send all of your Pikmin onto the Wollyhop, or continuously throw Rock Pikmin at it if the terrain is soft, but keep in mind strategies from the first two games work here too, as well as the Yellow Wollyhop strategies.

Notes

Olimar's voyage log

There is a troublesome creature by the water. It immediately tries to jump on and squish the Pikmin, so if I don't quickly issue commands, the Pikmin get flattened. If they could use their strength to hold the beast down, could it still jump...?

Reel notes

This creature's coloration results from remaining sheltered in its cavernous dwelling.

Olimar's notes

It is believed that juvenile wollywogs were once carried by underground current into caverns, where they thrived in the dark habitat. This troglodytic species of wollywog's coloration results from generations of cave dwelling and lack of sunlight. Comparative differences between the size and shape of this wollywog and other species are thought to be the result of natural selection at work, choosing traits better suited to life in a subterranean environment.

Louie's notes

Wollywogs are best ground up, shaped into a patty, and flame-broiled on a grill. Slap on tomato slices, lettuce, onions, ketchup, and slide the patty between a sesame-seed bun for the ultimate beast-burger experience.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

With a distinct pallor, almost like it was painted with white face paint, it gives off an air of a performing mime. This cutie can jump with quiet refinement, never moving its plump jowls at all. It's graceful and expressive in the most unexpected ways.

Pikmin Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

When the wollywog hops, keep your Pikmin clear of its shadow, the moment the wollwog lands, use the C Stick to march your Pikmin into the belly-flopper. Rotate the C Stick in circles to ensure that your Pikmin stampede has the wollywog fully surrounded. Around 60 Pikmin can easily make it croak.

Pikmin Nintendo Power booklet[edit]

Wollywogs appear in two varieties: white and yellow. Neither type considers Pikmin to be a food source, but both are equally quick to pounce on any creature caught too close to its personal space.

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Standard Wollywogs are pale because they never get any sun. You'll find them in underground areas exclusively, and often in the water. Attack the hoppers with small squads of tossed Pikmin. If you swarm them, chances are some of your troops will get squashed.

New Play Control! Pikmin European website[edit]

These chunky frog-like creatures leap into the sky and then slam themselves to the ground, crushing anything beneath it. Wollyhops can often jump into the sky when Pikmin are still latched onto them. It takes a swarm of Pikmin to weigh one down enough to stay on the ground.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

The Wollyhop appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The Wollywog trophy from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Description:

A member of the amphituber family known to be quite quick witted upon spotting enemies, despite its slow-moving, easygoing nature. Be aware that wollywogs will make aggressive attempts to smash Pikmin. It is believed that the wollywog's whitish coloration is a result of a lack of sunlight over its generations spent in caves.

Naming[edit]

See more: Amphituber family#Naming.
  • Common name: Wollyhop or Wollywog, depending on game and version.
The enemy is called the Wollywog in both American English and British English versions of Pikmin and Pikmin 2, but in New Play Control! Pikmin and New Play Control! Pikmin 2, the enemy is called the Wollywog in the American English version and the Wollyhop in the British English version. In the Nintendo Switch Versions of Pikmin and Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4, the enemy is called the Wollyhop in both English versions.
Although never addressed by Nintendo, it is a common belief among fans that the change was made due to the word "wog" being a racial slur in British and Australian English.
The Wollyhop's original name, and its current name by extension, seems to be derived from pollywog, another word for tadpole.
  • Japanese nickname: マロガエル?. ガエル? means "frog." マロ? could be interpreted multiple ways. 麻呂? is a common name among the kuge, a class of individuals who wear makeup to make their faces pale white. It could also be the tail end of the word マシュマロ? (lit.: "Marshmallow"), given that the Wollyhop looks marshmallow-like. Another word it could come from is the front of the word マロン?, meaning "Chestnut."
  • Japanese name: マロイモガエル?, lit.: "Maro Potato Frog".
  • Scientific name: Amphicaris albino. Albino refers to the creature's pale skin. In the Pikmin Nintendo Player's Guide, the scientific name is instead Amphicaris frodendum, the same as the Yellow Wollyhop's.
  • Internal names: In Pikmin, it is internally known as frow, which is frog (the Yellow Wollyhop's internal name) but with w, likely short for "white", standing in for the last letter. In Pikmin 2, the internal name is marofrog; "maro" is a part of its Japanese common name.
  • Prerelease: In the GameCube Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc Version 18, this enemy's genus name is mistakenly the same as the Water Dumple's, making its scientific name Ichthyosa Albino.[3]
