In Pikmin 4, Wild Pikmin in caves appear to supplement your squad. Pikmin that appear in caves do so regardless of whether you have discovered their Onion in the overworld, and you will be allowed to keep the Pikmin on future days- although you will not be able to grow more through nutrients until the Onion is found.

Wild Pikmin spawn conditions

Each group of 5 wild Pikmin is controlled by a single invisible group object. This object controls the type and state of the wild Pikmin, such as being sprouts, idle, or fighting an enemy. Every wild Pikmin group object and Candypop Bud can be replaced with a Nectar Egg, Candypop Bud, or simply removed if the player has too many of the object's set Pikmin type. Some wild Pikmin group objects specify a unique position for their replacement Candypop Bud to be placed at. After processing these replacements for each object, the game checks how many Pikmin in are in the sublevel, both in the player's squad and wild. If there are more than 100, then every wild Pikmin group is replaced with a Candypop Bud of the same color. If a group object has a unique position specified for its Candypop Bud replacement, then it will use that position. Then, the game checks for any newly spawned Candypop Buds in improper locations. These include areas with a low ceiling, platforms that are too high, inside of bushes, and too close to enemies. If any such Candypop Buds are found, they are deleted.

Candypop Buds also feature a Pikmin type limit, meaning the player can never obtain more than 6 Pikmin types at once, not including Glow Pikmin. This behavior can only be seen in Cavern for a King. The first spawned Candypop Bud checks whether its type would allow for more than 6 Pikmin types to be on the players squad. If so, it changes its type to one already in the player's squad, in this order of priority: Ice, White, Purple, Winged, Rock, Blue, Yellow, Red. If it doesn't break the type limit, then the Candypop Bud remains its original color. This process repeats for every Candypop Bud in the sublevel in the order that they were spawned.
