Jumbo Bulborbs (ジャンボチャッピー^?, lit.: "Jumbo Chappy") are massive enemies found in Pikmin 4.

As their name implies, they are gigantic Bulborbs, dwarfing all other Bulborb species and rivalling the Emperor Bulblax in terms of sheer size. Outside of the size difference, they appear identical to normal Bulborbs. Jumbo Bulborbs are cathemeral, and therefore can be found both aboveground, belowground, and during Night Expeditions.

Unlike most Bulborbs, they do not sleep, instead usually actively wandering the area in search of prey, similar to Spotty Bulbears. They can sometimes be found hiding in foliage, waiting to ambush passing Pikmin.

Behavior

Jumbo Bulborbs will either patrol an area or hide within vegetation and wait to ambush nearby prey. Like most Bulborbs, they have a defined territory, and will disengage a chase to return to it if it is far away enough.

Once they notice prey, they become aggressive and will run towards nearby Pikmin, Leaders, and Oatchi. They will then scream and proceed to lunge at them 3 times to try and eat them. If it manages to catch any Pikmin, up to a max of 15 per attack, it will stand up and eat them; otherwise, it will trip and then try again. If there are a lot of Pikmin attacking it at once, it will shake them off and then immediately lunge 3 times.

Pikmin

Using a large number of Pikmin and throwing them all onto the Bulborb's body at once using Oatchi's rush ability can be very effective. Like with all Bulborbs, it's best to do so from behind to avoid it attacking prematurely. It is possible to also fight it by circling around it whilst throwing Pikmin onto the back of the Bulborb. However, this is riskier than it would be with a normal Bulborb due to its increased health. Regardless of your strategy, however, your greatest strength will be numbers, as once it begins its lunging attack, most (if not all) Pikmin close to it or on it are flung forward and perfectly into its attack. If you don't have many Pikmin, it's better to bait it into attacking, then dodging until it tuckers itself out to retaliate with a Rush from Oatchi.

When it savagely bites, it's only doing so to protect those it cares about. The most loving critters can sometimes also be the fiercest.”

“During reproduction, after an egg is fertilized by a sperm, any excess chromosomes are usually discarded through a process called meiosis. But occasionally, this process fails to occur, and a Bulborb individual will develop irregularly due to this chromosomal abnormality.

Specimens like this one are stronger than the average Bulborb and can exhibit more aggressive behavior. However, they are not able to procreate, as they will never reach sexual maturity.”

“It's a larger creature, but the meat is tender and flavourful. It's impossible to eat in one sitting, so store some portions for later. Coat the fattier meat in cooking oil and freeze. Leaner cuts should be smoked.”

• Japanese name: ベニデメマダラ 倍数体^?, lit.: "Spotted Crimson Bug-eye (polyploid)". ベニデメマダラ^? is the Japanese name of the Bulborb. 倍数体^? directly translates into "polyploid". Polyploidy is a condition that causes a creature's cells to have more than one chromosome, which can cause them to be larger than normal or cause more severe deformities.
• Scientific name: Oculus kageyamii russus (polyploid). This is the same scientific name as the normal Bulborb, with the added "polyploid" distinction.
• Internal names: BIGCHAPPY_NIGHT. Chappy is the Japanese name for Bulborbs. The night distinction refers to these creatures more commonly appearing during night expeditions.

Trivia

• An abnormally large Bulborb is also present as a boss in Hey! Pikmin, however it is unclear if it has the same condition as the Jumbo Bulborb.
• Olimar's notes suggest that the Jumbo Bulborb likely suffers from some variant of down syndrome, being that it has an extra pair of chromosomes due to failed mitosis. This may explain its infertility.
