Shearflea

Main article: Shearflea.

The Shearflea is an enemy found in Pikmin 4. They are small reddish creatures that resemble fleas. They can be found in several caves and the Hero's Hideaway. Unlike most enemies, when they grab a Pikmin, they don't instantly try to eat them. They instead attempt to jump away from the player and then eat them.

Naming

The family's name, Springjab, can be split up into two words: spring and jab. The word spring means to 'move or jump suddenly or rapidly upwards or forwards' which is in relation to how the Shearflea hops around. The word jab means to 'poke roughly or quickly, especially with something sharp or pointed', this is in relation to the way the Shearfleas attack their prey, using their spike-like mouth.

The genus Suprictis could be derived from supra and ictus, Latin for 'above' and 'stab' respectively.
