The Vehemoth Phosbat is a boss in Pikmin 3, and the second boss encountered in story mode. It is a large, bioluminescent moth-like creature with massive orange wings, yellow eyes, small stumpy limbs, and a large gaping whale-like mouth.
The hideous creature resides in dark caves, where it renders itself completely invisible by turning off all of its biolights, which also allows it to safely roam the cave undetected. When a captain approaches the Vehemoth Phosbat, it lights up its entire body with bioluminescent hairs which glow pink, and an orange torso. Upon lighting up, it will opens its mouth and inhale ferociously, creating a powerful vortex that will trap pikmin and the captain. After a few seconds, any number of Pikmin up to 5 will be inhaled into its mouth and become the Phosbat's meal.[1] When distressed, it will also frantically flap its wings, releasing a cloud of toxic dust that chokes nearby Pikmin. Since White Pikmin are not in the Story mode of Pikmin 3, no Pikmin types are immune to this attack.[2]
Purple Pikmin are not affected by the vortex due to their bulky build. If enough Pikmin are thrown onto its back, it can be weighed down and grounded, where it will try to crawl around with its small feet. In Mission Mode, it becomes slightly easier to fight, as Alph can now distract the creature while Brittany throws Pikmin onto its back, grounding it.[3]
Battling the Vahemoth Phosbat
when fighting this boss you will find wires every where. you must use them to light a small part of the cave by using yellow pikmin to connect them. Also make sure that you light up the mushrooms that are hiding in the cave. they should help you by repeling the larvas of the Phosbat since they hate the light as well. once you lit up most of the cave, you must find a large crystal nodule that holds a pile of fragments. use you pikmin to carry the fragments to make a brige. once it's done, throw Brittany or Alph across a gape and 20 yellow pikmin. there you should see a power cell that you need to connect to light the intire area thus removing the Phosbat's abillity to turn transperint. once that is done you must now attack the monsterus beast. The strategy to fighting it is to lock on to it, then make it do it's inhaling attack. Then walk behind it and throw your yellow pikmin to reach it and bring it down while it's doing it's inhaling animation. once it's down do you charge attack to send all your pikmin to attack it to do massive damage . once it had enough, it will shake all the pikmin off and release a powder that will send you pikmin panicing. however this attack does not kill them. the Vahemoth Phosbat will them retreat on a rock. Follow it and use non rock pikmin to stick to it. it will shake the pikmin off and start flying agian. let it follow you to a flat area and repeat the attack method. Do this and the boss will be beaten. the Phosbat will then fly up to the light bulb and get electrufied and final ending it's life.
Background
At the beginning of the game, Charlie takes shelter in a cave, where he finds larval Phosbats crawling on the cave floor. He uses his Yellow Pikmin to kill them, which leads to the parent Phosbat abducting him. He is not discovered by Alph and Brittany until sometime later, presumably Day 6.[4]
