The Volatile Dweevil is an enemy in Pikmin 2. At first glance, it appears to be Bomb Rock with legs, but are actually Dweevils that have picked up bomb-rocks, much like how other members of the Dweevil family pick up treasures and corpses; unlike other members of that family, Volatile Dweevils are known only to carry bomb-rocks, and are never seen without one. They are considered the "suicide bombers" of Pikmin games.

A Volatile Dweevil's Bomb Rock will start the count-down fuse as soon as the creature is startled, it will chase captains and Pikmin until the bomb explodes, killing itself, and anything else caught in the blast. With that in mind, the best way to deal with a Volatile Dweevil simply to run away from it until it blows up. They cannot be directly attacked unless petrified, which also freezes the bomb-rock in mid-detonation, making it useful in an emergency but often impractical because it wastes a spray on an enemy which will drop no corpse.

In terms of gameplay, Volatile Dweevils are more-so hazards than enemies. They can unexpectedly drop from the ceiling and are often found around treasures, making them extremely dangerous to Pikmin attempting to retrieve the treasure.

Half Activated Dweevil

Start up the Piklopedia. Then go to the Volatile Dweevil archive. First petrify it, then wait. Right before it breaks free, petrify it again. If it is done correctly, Bomb Rock should be turned into stone. Throw Pikpik Carrots at it, and if they hit it, it will wake up, but the bomb-rock won't activate. Before the rock breaks free, petrify the Dweevil, and only the body will be petrified, but the bomb-rock will activate. The bomb-rock may even explode and kill the petrified Dweevil.

2-player battle

In battle mode, if the roulette wheel lands on Volatile Dweevil, a player can drop one on the enemy at any time by pushing Y. This is a good idea if the enemy is in the middle of plucking Pikmin.

Strategy

If there's a Volatile Dweevil in your way, stay away from it. Otherwise, it'll explode and kill all your Pikmin in one hit. Therefore, it is best to stay out of their path if a pilot has no Pikmin behind him. If a Volatile Dweevil is near an enemy, it is best to let it be near a group (example includes four Dwarf Orange Bulborbs). If you're doing it in Submerged Castle, have no ally Bulbmin. Otherwise, the small Bulbmin will be killed by the explosion.

Trivia

  • The Volatile Dweevil is one of only two enemies that can be killed in the Piklopedia.
  • It's Piklopedia entry states Dweevils copy the "behavior" of the objects they carry, hence Volatile Dweevils blowing up like the Bomb Rocks they possess.
