The Scornet Maestro is the boss of the Twilight River and the fourth boss overall of Pikmin 3. It appears to be a combination of a bee and a bird, with harp-like strings connecting its mandibles. It is accompanied by a swarm of Scornets, and the Scornet Maestro uses its "harp" to control the Scornets. Upon the player's arrival to the top of the tree stump, it abducts Louie.
Attacks
The Scornet Maestro isn't as much of a threat as the Scornets it commands: the Scornets will fly in and attack the player's squad, but the Scornets will attack in three formations. The first formation involves the Scornets organizing themselves into a conical shape, which will shoot Scornets at the Pikmin. The Maestro repeats this attack until its health is lowered to 50%, after which it utilizes another formation. The Scornet Maestro makes the Scornets line up into a five-row deep rectangular formation, which the Scornet Maestro will send at the Pikmin, one row at a time. It will repeat this until its health is further lowered to 25%, to which it will use its most dangerous attack yet. The final attack involves the Scornets circling around the leader's squad of Pikmin, slowly closing in.
Strategy to defeat
20 Winged Pikmin is a good amount for taking this boss on; more will deal more damage but also have a greater risk of getting snagged by the Scornets. Other types of Pikmin may help, but they are not necessary.
The Scornet Maestro is defenseless without its Scornets. After each attack, the Maestro is vulnerable; during this time, lock on and have your Winged Pikmin swarm it. The Scornet will be brought the ground where it will slowly crawl around. If the you choose, you can bring a stronger type of Pikmin (Red Pikmin, for example) to hit it while it is down and thus deal more damage.
Whenever the Maestro is conducting his swarm (tell-tale harp music will play), there is only one default attack and two are unlocked. These attacks will snag Pikmin that can then be freed by Winged Pikmin when the swarm returns, but it is much simpler to just avoid the attacks.
To avoid the default, or "cone" formation, simply move along the outer edge without stopping until the Scornets have all flown away. Use this opportunity to swarm it.
At 50% health, the "row" formation is unlocked. Follow the same strategy for the cone formation. The attack will come closer but will not hit you as long as you stick the the edge of the arena and run. Once the scornets are gone, attack as per normal.
After taking more damage, the Maestro will use the most dangerous attack yet. The "circle" formation has the Scornet's form a circle around the active captain. If you get caught in the circle, attack one section until there is an opening large enough to escape from
The safest method to deal with this is to have all but one of the captains and all of the Pikmin exit the arena. Then switch to the captain actively in the arena. Put yourself far away from the entrance and sit there until the circle forms. Once this happens, switch to the captains outside the arena. Charge in and wait for the Scornets to fly away. Now attack the Maestro as per normal. As soon as the Scornets return, have the two captains and pikmin exit again. Repeat this strategy until the Maestro is finished.
After its defeat, the Scornet Maestro drops Louie, along with the Seed Hive, a papaya, worth 2 1/2 bottles of juice.*
- It might be best to save grabbing the papaya for later days, as Louie will steal all the juice, and the Seed Hive would be convenient for building up your juice supply.

Trivia
- The Scornet Maestro and its Scornets draw interesting parallels to the captains and their Pikmin. Both the captains and the Maestro command massive armies made up of small organisms that would be weak by themselves. However, without this army, both leaders are effectively defenseless.
