The Burrowing Snagret (ヘビガラス?, lit.: "Crow Snake") is an enemy in the Pikmin games and the boss of White Flower Garden in Pikmin 2. It appears to be a combination of a bird and a snake, and a member of the Snavian family (Snavian being a combination of the words snake and avian, avian meaning "bird-related"). They remain underground for the majority of the time, surfacing only when approached by Pikmin or a leader. Every few times it emerges, the beast gets stuck with only its head above ground for a while, giving a leader an opportunity to attack without fear of losing any Pikmin. When above ground, it attempts to eat Pikmin one by one until it is sufficiently damaged, at which point it burrows back underground.
When killed in Pikmin, Burrowing Snagrets explode into many pellets; in Pikmin 2, a dead Burrowing Snagret leaves behind its head to be returned to an Onion or the Research Pod.
In Pikmin 3, the Burrowing Snagret has undergone appearance changes to be represented in HD. Its scales and head feathers are larger and more defined. It can also shed these feathers during battle, although this is just aethstetic. After it is defeated, its entire body will come out from the ground, revealing it has a foot. Unlike the previous games, the Burrowing Snagret only appears once in the Story Mode, and it never respawns. If left unsalvaged, its body will not be there the next day, unlike the major bosses. It drops the only Insect Condo in the story.
Locations
Their only locations in the first game are The Forest of Hope where 3 appear in the same area, and The Final Trial on Challenge Mode. In Pikmin 2, a Burrowing Snagret is the boss of White Flower Garden, found on sublevel 5 (this one contains the Five-man Napsack), and many are encountered throughout Snagret Hole; one is even guarding the entrance in Awakening Wood, where the three in Pikmin are located. Another is on sublevel 4 of Hole of Heroes, and yet another guards the Pink Menace in the Valley of Repose. Burrowing Snagrets are the most common boss-class enemies in Pikmin 2, having eight different in-game occurrences outside of Challenge Mode. In Pikmin 3, Burrowing Snagrets are known to live in the Twilight River. There are also Burrowing Snagrets in Mission Mode levels including Silver Lake, Tropical Wilds Remix, Garden of Hope Remix, Twilight River Remix, and Shaded Garden Remix. There are four of them located in Garden of Hope Remix.

"As its name implies, the Burrowing Snagret spends most of its time underground. When it senses potential prey, however, this creature emerges and uses its powerful beak to snatch up any victims in range. The Burrowing Snagret's body it protected by scales, making the creature's head its only weak point.
Each time a Burrowing Snagret emerges from the ground, there's a brief pause just after the creature's beak appears -- this brief window is the only opportunity you'll have to execute a successful charge. If your Pikmin can latch onto the creature's head before it's fully exposed, they'll be able to do a significant amount of damage in a very short time. Winged Pikmin can charge the Burrowing Snagret's head whenever it's above ground, but you'll need a large squad to compensate for the Winged Pikmin's low attack power.
If you can't seem to land a successful charge attack, flank the Burrowing Snagret's side and toss your Pikmin directly onto the creature's head. This method makes it fairly difficult to keep your squad out of harm's way, but it does allow you to deal reliable damage for the duration of the battle."

In Pikmin, they are extremely hard to beat without losing Pikmin if thrown at the head, as they have very high health and are larger than in the second game. Its striking speed will also allow it to eat some Pikmin and burrow back into the ground before any real damage is done. When trying to defeat it in the first game, the best strategy is to throw Red Pikmin at its head while it's emerging from the ground as fast as you can, then whistling in your Pikmin right before it shakes them off to prevent them being eaten. Another effective, but risky way is to swarm the head in hopes of making the Burrowing Snagret retreat underground. In Pikmin 2, defeating one is an easier task because of its lower health; even so, it remains a good idea to use Purple Pikmin.
It is easy to take advantage of the fact that sometimes, the beast will not fully emerge, getting stuck for some time. It is best to attack the Snagret then, and Olimar should kill it without losing any Pikmin. With quick, accurate throwing, however, this is not necessary to secure the battle. Throw many Pikmin at its head as soon as possible and the Snagret should die before managing to swallow any of the Pikmin that it may have snatched up from the ground.
In both games, if it burrows back underground without swallowing Pikmin it has caught, these Pikmin will die. In the first game, it was the root of many glitches involving the counter.
In Pikmin 3, the Burrowing Snagret can be defeated in a matter of seconds by charging at it with 100 Winged Pikmin under the effects of an ultra-spicy spray. This works because the Snagret will only catch grounded Pikmin, and since the Winged Pikmin can fly, they can both dodge its beak, and aim straight for the head – its weak point.
It is not possible to defeat the Burrowing Snagret with leaders alone.
Burrowing Snarrow

The Burrowing Snarrow is a creature that is referred to only twice in the Pikmin series, but never seen. The first of these mentions is in the enemy reel at the end of Pikmin, while the second is in Olimar's notes on the Burrowing Snagret in Pikmin 2's Piklopedia.

Naming
Pronunciation: unknown.
This boss is named "burrowing" due to its habit of burrowing and remaining underground until prey approach. Although the Pileated Snagret also burrows, it is a less important characteristic. "Snagret" seems to be a combination of the words "snake" or "snag", which means "to catch", and "egret", a kind of bird resembling the Snagret. In Japanese, the creature is called ヘビガラス?, meaning "Crow Snake"; this is because of the enemy itself being a combination of a snake and a bird – likely a crow. Its scientific name is shiropedes anacondii. The first part contains the word pedes, which means "foot", but the origin of shiro is unknown; しろ? does mean "white" in Japanese, however. Anacondii is similar to "anaconda", a dangerous type of constricting snake. The internal name in Pikmin is quite straightforward – snake

Trivia
- The Burrowing Snagret can be seen in a pre-release video of Pikmin, where it appears to have a light or white body.
- In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Burrowing Snagret trophies contain a few mistakes.
- The Brawl trophy states that no one has ever seen a Burrowing Snagret's tail before. However, Olimar states in the Piklopedia that the Burrowing Snagret and Snarrow can both be distinguished by the markings on their tails, implying that Olimar has seen it full body, or at least its tail.
- The Super Smash Bros. for Wii U trophy erroneously omits Pikmin 2 from the list of games. The Pikmin trophies in Smash 4 always list the first two games, except for this one. In addition, the Snagret is more common in Pikmin 2 compared to Pikmin 3, specially considering it appears the most in the second game's story mode, and only once in the third game's. This makes the Pikmin 2 omission a mystery.
- In the US version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the description claims that the creature belongs to the "avian" family, instead of the snavian family.
- The Burrowing Snagret is the most commonly fought boss in all 3 games, as it can be fought 4 times in the first game, 9 times in the second game, and 9 times in the third game.
- If one only counts story mode, then this title is lost in Pikmin 3, as it is only encountered once.
- In-game sources disagree on whether the creature's body is lined with feathers or scales: the enemy reel states they are feathers, while Olimar's voyage log call them scales. Louie's notes refer to the creature's 'serpentine torso', also implying they are scales.
- In Pikmin 2, this enemy and the Pileated Snagret shake the least when damaged, i.e. their model stretches the least amount of all enemies.
