The Giant Breadbug (オオパンモドキ?, lit.: "Giant Pseudo Bread") is a boss in Pikmin 2 and in Pikmin 4. Unlike other Breadbugs, this one is large and shaped almost perfectly cubical, looking like a whole loaf of bread, making it the largest species in the Breadbug family. It acts the same as normal Breadbugs, but is harder to damage by "rejection" from the pod. It is the least aggressive boss in Pikmin 2 (the boss theme music is not even played, though an exclusive tune is played only in the specific cave sublevel). The more recognizable habitat is located on the last sublevel (6) of the Glutton's Kitchen and consists of only two other Breadbugs, electrical wires, and Anode Beetles. This creature is also found in the Snack Pit in Challenge Mode, and in the final sublevel of the Plunder Palace in Pikmin 4 (its only location in that game). The Giant Breadbug can instantly replenish its HP if it collects an object into its den.

Olimar's notes (Pikmin 4)
“This gargantuan species of the greater Breadbug family has a torso so perfectly square that it almost seems like it was formed in a mold.
For a brief period after birth, the Giant Breadbug competes for food with smaller Breadbugs, but upon reaching maturity, it seeks out much larger prey. This is the primary reason two species with similar feeding habits can coexist in the same habitat.
Hordes of Pikmin appear to pose the only plausible threat to this massive creature's life.”Louie's notes (Pikmin 4)

“パンモドキ科の中では大型だが、基本的な性質は小型のマキパンモドキとほとんど変わらない。体が成長するに伴い、大きな獲物を狙うようになる。
特徴 その1 力が強い
- 引っ張る力が強い。

Translation
“Although it is a large species within the Breadbug family, its basic characteristics are almost identical to those of the smaller Breadbug. As it grows older, it begins to target larger prey.
Feature #1: High strength
- Its pulling power is strong.
- (Image text: It is equivalent to 3 Breadbugs, or 30 Pikmin)
Feature #2: Thick epidermis
- The thick, sturdy epidermis is resistant to lateral impacts.
- (Image text: Like the Breadbug, it is vulnerable to pressure from above)”

The Giant Breadbug's carrying power is always 30.
Strategy
The following article or section contains guides. |
In Pikmin 2, there are three ways to damage the Giant Breadbug, each with their own quirks: by letting it hit its head on the Research Pod, throwing Purple Pikmin at it, or swarming it whilst petrified.
The standard way to defeat this enemy involves you waiting until it latches onto a treasure or defeated creature, such as the nearby Anode Beetles, or Breadbugs. Then, toss onto or swarm the treasure with as many Pikmin as possible (preferably twice as much as the minimum weight; this is of course made easier if Purple Pikmin are used) and watch them drag the helpless Giant Breadbug toward the Research Pod. Like with normal Breadbugs, should there not be enough Pikmin on the treasure, they will be pulled into the Giant Breadbug's den and killed.
When the enemy hits the pod, it loses almost half its health. The process can then be repeated as many times as necessary to take it down. You should note two things however: if the Giant Breadbug carries something back to its den successfully, it fully replenishes its life, wasting all of your hard work damaging it. Secondly, you'll need to bring it to the Research Pod more than once, so make sure that there are enough carriable objects around to work with. This can be harder if there are small Breadbugs around taking out objects into their own dens. To help with this, you can leave some Pikmin to distract the other Breadbugs, you can leave the Anode Beetles alone until you want to turn them into carriable corpses, and you can use eggs as a last resort – if an egg has Mitites, you can get yourself some extra corpses to work with.
If there are no more corpses, the only other normal way to damage the boss is by throwing Purple Pikmin on top of it, which can prove to be challenging, especially with a small number of Purple Pikmin. Each Purple takes away about one twentieth of the Giant Breadbug's health.
Finally, the only other way to damage it is to petrify it and then just send any Pikmin to attack it. However, for some bizarre reason, after the Giant Breadbug hits its head on the Research Pod once, it becomes impossible to petrify it from there on out, until the cave is exited.
Defeating the Giant Breadbug in Pikmin 4 is almost identical to Pikmin 2, except that it's much harder to damage them with Purple Pikmin. It is easier to throw Yellow Pikmin on top of it, as 10 of them will be enough to crush it and deal a large amount of damage. They will also charge your party after being hit by the S.S. Beagle, knocking down any Pikmin (or Oatchi) in their path. This won't kill them, but it will cause them to lose their flowers. This charge is also capable of killing other enemies.[1], and works similarly to Oatchi's charge. The Giant Breadbug can also shake off Pikmin that it is engaged in tug-of-war with, making it much more difficult to successfully steal an object from it compared to in Pikmin 2. It cannot steal objects Oatchi has swallowed, although note that swallowing an object a Giant Breadbug is actively carrying will enrage it and cause it to charge.
