The Bug-Eyed Crawmad (デメジャコ?, lit.: "Bug-Eyed Mantis Shrimp", Bugeyed Crawmad in the European version) is a miniboss that appears in Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4. It is fought twice in the Garden of Hope in Pikmin 3, and found in Giant's Hearth and The Mud Pit in Pikmin 4. Its appearance is similar to the Hermit Crawmad, but it possesses distinctly large eyes protruding out of its head through eye-stalks. Instead of appearing from only one hole in the ground, it can switch between two different holes. It resembles stout lobster or shrimp-like crustaceans whose claws resemble those of squillas but are in fact related to hermit crabs.
The enemy sits in its burrow and is usually found around watery areas, although it can survive on dry land as well. It will peek out of its hole when prey – such as Pikmin – approach it. If a Pikmin or leader gets too close to its dwelling, the Crawmad will attack. It attacks by charging out of its hole and grabbing prey (up to ten Pikmin at once), almost instantly devouring them. The only way to damage this enemy is to hit its eyes. Once they are both significantly damaged, it will flip over exposing its raw underbelly. Despite being one of the largest bosses in the game, it takes only twelve Pikmin to carry.

Dalmo's notes[edit]
“Its peepers aren't just big—they're capable of seeing things our eyes can't. This bug-eyed darling could identify all sorts of unknown objects for us if we showed it what to look at. How useful could that be?!”
Olimar's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]
“Like its cousin the Hermit Crawmad, it makes its home in a burrow rather than a shell.
It has abnormally overdeveloped eyes with which to detect prey in cloudy water or low-visibility mud. These enormous eyes can perceive circular polarized light, as well as the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum.
It is well protected from predators, allowing it to live for upward of 50 years and grow to immense size by repeated ecdysis.”Louie's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]
Pikmin 3 Prima Guide[edit]
“The Bug-Eyed Crawmad is a large, burrowing creature. This heavily armored enemy attacks by lunging straight ahead and snapping its powerful claws. Any Pikmin it captures are fed directly into the creature's mouth, so it's important to keep your squad out of the Bug-Eyed Crawmad's path.
After you coax this creature out of its hole, throw your Pikmin at its retractable eyes. When both eyes have pulled back into its head, the Bug-Eyed Crawmad flips onto its back. Throw your Pikmin onto the creature's underbelly to deal damage until it recovers. Repeat the process until you defeat the Bug-Eyed Crawmad.”Pikmin Garden[edit]

Locations[edit]
Pikmin 3[edit]
In the main Story Mode, they're both found in the Garden of Hope.
- One of them is in a cave that contains an elevator platform puzzle, Dusk Pustules and some Hermit Crawmads. This cave is located behind two electric gates, located to the east of the Garden.
- The other one can be found on the half of the area where Blue Pikmin are found, to the Northwest of the path leading to the Quaggled Mireclops's arena. This Crawmad is located near the north pile of fragments that can be built into the tea cup, above water.
In Mission Mode, one appears in the Collect treasure! variant of the Fortress of Festivity. It appears in the circular arena that requires two captains to use the Bouncy mushrooms from the cake with the Dusk Pustules to reach and for one of them to be thrown up (who can then use Rock Pikmin to break a crystal to allow easy access). It releases 4 Cupid's Grenades when defeated and is worth 100 Pokos. Another appears in the Battle enemies! version of Forgotten Cove. It's behind a dirt wall, and killing it gives the player 100 points. Both of these enemies are considerably weaker than the ones encountered in Story Mode.
Finally, one also appears in the Bingo Battle stage Twisted Cavern.
Pikmin 4[edit]
In the main Story Mode, there are two Bug-Eyed Crawmads in the Giant's Hearth and one in The Mud Pit. In Giant's Hearth:
- One of the Giant's Hearth Crawmads appear in a small lower section with a sprinkler that either needs to be turned off or killed with Blue Pikmin and drops a Seed Hive.
- The second is found in a small body of water in-between the drainable pool with Wolpoles and the entrance of Cradle of the Beast and drops the Fish-Bed Snack.
The one in The Mud Pit appears on the third and last sublevel in a muddy arena and acts as the boss of the cave alongside two Hermit Crawmads and relinquishes a castaway when defeated.
In Olimar's Shipwreck Tale only, there is a Bug-Eyed Crawmad in a small arena near Serene Shores's southeast corner. This one holds an Automatic Gear.
Strategy[edit]
As an eye is attacked, it turns redder and eventually retracts. If both eyes are taken out before the Crawmad retreats into its hole, it will flip over, revealing its soft underbelly. After some seconds, it will flip back upright and the cycle restarts. Repeat the process if needed to defeat the beast.
With thrown Pikmin, manual cursor aiming may be needed, but Winged Pikmin can charge the eyes instead of the body. Rock Pikmin deal good damage when thrown directly onto the eyes as well. Bomb rocks may be used to instantly take out one eye, or both at once, immediately flipping the creature onto its back. Alternately, if one is ingested by the creature, it will cause it to take a sufficient amount of damage and flip over.
Winged Pikmin can take this mini-boss out in just a few seconds. Bring 100 of them out to fight it, preferably flowers, but the result shouldn't matter too much. Once the Bug-Eyed Crawmad is vulnerable, just lock onto one of the eyes and swarm it. The Winged Pikmin take out the eyes very quickly, and once one eye is down they will attack the other – either that or they will attack both at once. Once it flips over, don't do anything, as the Winged Pikmin will be above the body and will take that out very quickly too. This strategy becomes even more efficient when combined with an ultra-spicy spray, given its improvement in attack power for Winged Pikmin. When time is of importance (such as during Mission Mode or the Side Stories), a small group of 20 or more Winged Pikmin powered up by ultra-spicy spray can be dismissed near the mini-boss, and they should be able to defeat it on their own, allowing you to do something else in the meantime.
The Crawmad has been made quite a bit easier in Pikmin 4, as its health has been lowered. The beast also actually takes considerable damage to its eyes when hit with Rock Pikmin, more than the impact of a Purple Pikmin, which is an oddity.
In Pikmin 4 the strategy using Winged Pikmin is still effective, and Winged Pikmin actually seem to have better targeting of the enemy's eyes and underbelly while in combat, but it should be noted the couple encountered in Giant's Hearth may be seen as not worth bringing Winged Pikmin to, since Winged Pikmin lack the good amount of uneven ground, water or elevated enemies to make them particularly useful otherwise in this area. Notably, one of the two shellfish at Giant's Hearth are encounted under the protection of a Sprinkler, which Blue Pikmin can pass through without the construction of a Clay Valve.
Ice Pikmin also make considerably strong counters to this boss, as they can freeze it from the eyes allowing its entire body to be attacked. A small amount of Ice Pikmin as low as 15-20 can quickly freeze the Crawmad, writing its death sentance to a large squad of Pikmin. It should be noted that Oatchi's rush allows Rock Pikmin to deal increased damage when the beast is frozen, as little as 35 Rock Pikmin tipped off of oatchi are enough to deal mortal damage when the foe is frozen. In The Mud Pit, the boss is located in a large puddle of mud, which can permenantly freeze the boss with enough Ice Pikmin, making for a guarenteed defeat (although, it could be quicker to simply use your already presumably present squad of Winged Pikmin using Spicy Spray). The same can be said for when the boss is encountered in a puddle of water in Giant's Hearth.

Naming[edit]
- See more: Crawmad family#Naming.
- Common name: Bug-Eyed Crawmad. It is called such because of its protruding eyes – creatures like this are often called "bug-eyed". In UK English, the word "bug-eyed" is spelled "bugeyed", so the European and Oceanic releases of the game call the creature "Bugeyed Crawmad".
- Japanese nickname: デメジャコ?. デメ? means "bug-eyed", and ジャコ? is very similar to シャコ?, or "mantis shrimp".
- Japanese name: タイリクシャコガニ?, lit.: "Continent Mantis Shrimp Crab".
- Scientific name: Camabarus subterranid. Subterranid is a play on "subterranean", referring to its ability to hide underground.
- Internal names: Internally, this creature is called
demejako
, which is a Romanization of its Japanese name. - Prerelease: None.
