Phosbat Pods (コカガミのタマゴ?, lit.: "Child Mirror Egg") are egg sac-like structures from which Phosbats spawn. Much like the Phosbats themselves, they are sensitive to light, and will close up if exposed to it. They do not move, and function more like structures or terrain features than enemies, but they have a Piklopedia entry in Pikmin 3 Deluxe. However, it does not appear as an enemy on the radar. They can also be disabled by being attacked by Pikmin until defeated.

Behavior

Phosbat Pods can start either active or dormant, and while active, they will periodically spawn Phosbats. When the main light of the room they are in turns on, or when a nearby Glowcap or light bulb starts emitting light, an active pod will close its opening and will stop spawning more Phosbats; dormant pods will remain dormant.

Pods spawn a new Phosbat every ten seconds. Any given pod can spawn up to five Phosbats, and once it has done so, it will stop spawning more. Any time one of the Phosbats from that pod is killed, it will spawn again, up until it reaches the limit of five.

If a pod is dormant, only the Vehemoth Phosbat's roar will activate it, which happens when two small lights in the boss's arena are lit up.

Notes

Alph's comments

Structural flaw: light sensitivity
Weight: unknown

I have so many questions. Where does it get the resources to manufacture all of the tiny models? And why does light cause it to stop working? I've heard of solar-powered machines, but this one seems to be solar-powerless.

Brittany's comments

Try to break the egg, and the adult phosbat will come screeching right for you. As ugly and mean as it is, it does care about its little ones, so you can't call it all bad.

Charlie's comments

The downside of these things is that they never stop pumping out nasty critters, but the upside is that if you stand next to one long enough, you can get some good combat training in. I'd take one home to generate sparring partners, but they stop working as soon as light hits them.

Louie's comments

You can slurp up this beast's eggs right from the shell! With a sweet and velvety texture, they melt in your mouth!

Phosbat Sac
Tectupervus pteromys
Aerodentia family

The vehemoth phosbat's egg sacs are found affixed to surfaces around its lair. Each sac spawns roughly five baby phosbats, stopping when enough pheromones are in the air to trigger its automatic response. This keeps the population density of phosbats in any given cave at a sustainable level, which is important given the limited supply of food available in its habitat.

Naming

See more: Phosbat#Naming.

Its name simply comes from it being a sort of cocoon for generating Phosbats.

Its scientific name, Tectupervus pteromys, is shared with both the Phosbat and Vehemoth Phosbat.
