The Medusal Slurker is an enemy from Pikmin 3. It was the first new enemy fightable in the E3 2012 Demo. It is a floating, pink, jellyfish-like enemy with two small serpentine eyes and a single antenna sprouting from its top that resembles a seeding dandelion. It has a green pouch inside its head to store food. This pouch has a growth like a human uvula hanging from it, which it extends to the ground and expands to trap its prey.
There is a possibility that it could be related to the Greater Spotted Jellyfloat, due to it's similiar appearence, attack methods and the capturing of Pikmin.
In the E3 demo, this enemy can be seen with its pouch full of rock pikmin, which are released when the creature is defeated.[1]
It takes 7 Pikmin to carry, and is worth 15 pokos.
Strategy
The Medusal Slurker seems to be generally passive, usually minding its own business and floating gently above the ground, occasionally moving. When a captain or Pikmin approach, however, it will float away. If the Pikmin or captain still continue to come closer, the Slurker will hover over where they are standing and drop its uvula-like appendage onto the ground, which expands to capture any Pikmin in its mucus-like structure. It will then suck them back into its transparent body and they will presumably be digested over a period of time, much like the Jellyfloats are capable of doing. It can also shake off Pikmin that are attacking it.
To defeat this creature, Pikmin must simply be thrown at its body, and quickly called back. If they aren't called back, they will be shaken off and vulnerable to attack by the creature's uvula. Once defeated, the green core inside the creature will explode and its pink membrane will fly up into the air and after a few seconds, fall back to the ground, where it can be harvested.
Trivia
- The Medusal Slurker is the first gelatinous enemy in the Pikmin series whose body doesn't completely dissolve after death and therefore, is salvagable.
- In the E3 demo of Pikmin 3, the Medusal Slurker used the same sound effects as the Jellyfloats from Pikmin 2. However, these seemed to just be placeholders, as the creature appears to make new, ableit unrealistic sound effects in the 12-5-12 Nintendo Direct footage. It was also shown attacking in this video for the first time.
- The Medusal Slurker resembles the medusal stage of a jellyfish's life cycle, hence the "Medusal" part of its name. However, in the E3 demo, the Medusal Slurker had Rock Pikmin inside its body when it was first encountered, which was also thought to explain the prefix in its name. Because of this, it was speculated that the Medusal Slurker would play a key role in Rock Pikmin reproduction.
