Flower types are an important part of Pikmin Bloom. There is a large variety of flower types that appear in several different forms. These different forms include the flowers on Pikmin heads, nectar, petals, and Big Flowers. At the beginning of each month, a new flower type (or a new color of an existing flower type) is introduced to the game and made available to obtain.

Flower type uses[edit]

Although there is very large amount of flower types and colors, there are not many game mechanics that require specific flower types to be planted. While one of the games most important features is flower planting, this can simply be done with normal petals. Despite this, there are still some specific uses that require specific flower types and colors to be used instead of other types. These include:

  • Completing missions during events that require specific types and colors of flowers to be planted. This includes Event Challenge missions as well as special missions to earn Community Day badges during anniversary and half-anniversary events.
  • Pikmin with seasonal flowers on their head have increased attack power against mushroom battles. Attack power is further increased if the seasonal flower is also the current Flower of the Month.
  • Following the gameplay loop surrounding flower types, once nectar for a specific flower type has been obtained, it can be fed to Pikmin to create petals of the same flower type. These petals can be planted in the radius of a Big Flower to bloom the flower into the same flower type, which will reward a fruit that gives nectar of the same flower type.
  • 150 petals of a specific flower type can be used to immediately bloom a Big Flower using the "Use petals to make flowers bloom!" button that appears in the menu of a Big Flower, which is used to obtain Big Flower Postcards. Lifelog artwork of the selected flower type and color will appear on the postcard once obtained, and the Pikmin chosen to appear in the postcard will have the selected flower type appear on their head.
  • While participating in a flower planting challenge, players will sometimes receive 1 petal for every 1,000 petals of whatever flower type was planted by another participating player. (For example, if one player plants 1,000 blue pansies, all players participating in the weekly challenge may receive 1 blue pansy petal as a bonus. The specific details behind this mechanic are not entirely understood).

Big Flower Forecast and Flower of the Month[edit]

Towards the end of every month, Niantic publishes a blog post in the news section of the Pikmin Bloom website called the Big Flower Forecast. This blog post highlights the new flower type that will be added into the game the following month, dubbed the Flower of the Month, lists the available flower types, and announces the date for the following month’s Community Day. The Community Day is always themed around the Flower of the Month, and rewards a badge themed around that flower type. The Big Flower Forecast changes monthly, and has occasionally been the same for two months in a row.

When the new month starts, the available flower types that were listed in the blog post become available to obtain from fruit earned from mushroom battles, and Big Flowers with primarily regular flowers planted in it's radius will have a chance of blooming into any of the seasonal flowers available in the Big Flower Forecast.

History[edit]

Throughout the game's lifespan, the available flower types have changed frequently to add variety to the game. Originally, these changes happened inconsistently, but after March 2022, the Big Flower Forecast was introduced and simplified the monthly flower system. Whenever a Community Day occurs, all Big Flowers bloomed with regular petals will bloom into the Flower of the Month.

  • When the game was released in October 2021, there were simply two tiers of rare flowers: pansies and roses. Planting regular flowers in the radius of a Big Flower would usually make the Big Flower bloom into a regular flower, but there was a small chance that it would bloom into a pansy. Planting pansies in the radius would usually make the Big Flower bloom into a pansy, but there was a small chance that it would bloom into a rose. This made roses a very rare flower type. During this period, fruit earned from mushroom battles rewarded pansy nectar.
  • The second Community Day on December 18th, 2021 introduced poinsettias as a flower type. After that date, poinsettias replaced pansies as the main rare flower, though planting mostly pansies inside the radius continued to bloom a pansy, and this method of blooming out-of-season flowers has continued ever since. (For example, planting pansy petals in the radius of a Big Flower even if pansies are not included in the current month's Big Flower Forecast will still bloom the Big Flower into a pansy). Planting poinsettias or pansies in the radius of a Big Flower still had a low chance of making a rose bloom. After December 21st, fruit earned from mushroom battles rewarded poinsettia nectar.
  • On January 1st, 2022, camellias were introduced as a new flower type, and these joined poinsettias as rare flowers that had a low chance of blooming when regular flowers were planted in the radius of a Big Flower. After the Community Day on January 22nd, poinsettias were no longer available to obtain this way. After January 22nd, fruit earned from mushroom battles rewarded camellia nectar.
  • On February 11th, 2022, plum blossoms were introduced as a new flower type, and now, planting regular flowers in the radius of a Big Flower had a chance of blooming it into a pansy, poinsettia, camellia, or plum blossom. The 2022 Valentine's Day Event on February 14th made roses very common to bloom Big Flowers into, and changed it so fruit earned from mushroom battles rewarded rose nectar. Once the event concluded, things returned to the way they were prior to the event.
  • Since March 2022, the system of flower availability from Big Flowers was simplified with the introduction of the Big Flower Forecast, and the second tier of flower rarity was removed, with roses now being treated the same way as other rare flowers, which were now called seasonal flowers. Since this change, planting regular flowers around a Big Flower now has a chance of blooming a selection of seasonal flowers from the current Big Flower Forecast, and fruit earned from mushroom battles can reward any of the current flowers available in the Big Flower Forecast as well as regular nectar. Community Days continue to change the flower availability for that day/weekend only and feature the current Flower of the Month.
  • Since August 2023, Pikmin with the Flower of the Month on their head gain an additional point of strength in mushroom battles, compared to Pikmin with other seasonal flowers blooming on their head. In months where only one color of a particular flower species is the Flower of the Month, all colors of that species give this attack boost.
