Beastly Caverns is a Mission Mode stage in Pikmin 3. It consists of a central above-ground segment, surrounded by a cave system where the camera takes a unique side-angle view. It is playable in the Collect Treasure! and Battle Enemies! modes. In the original Pikmin 3, it was released as downloadable content on December 2nd, 2013, while in Pikmin 3 Deluxe, it is part of the base game and can be unlocked in each of the 2 modes by completing the first 10 stages in that mode.

Overview[edit]

This map is made of two major components: there is a square-shaped area at the center, and it is surrounded by a long corridor all around it, taking the shape of a square as well. The area at the center takes place at surface level, featuring grass and plants, while the long corridor is located underground and made of holes, bearing a resemblance to burrows. Two lakes can be found, one at the surface next to the starting point, and one underground.

Layout[edit]

Captain Olimar and Alph begin in the center segment of the map, with the SPERO, 10 Red Pikmin sprouts under the Red Onion, and 10 Blue Pikmin sprouts under the Blue Onion; several Pellet Posies surround the area to propagate Pikmin. To the north is a section of land blocked by a reinforced wall, containing a Red Bulborb and two Dwarf Red Bulborbs, as well as a Sunseed Berry, Dawn Pustules, a Firebreathing Feast, and a dirt mound containing three bomb rocks. This section is also accessible through a tunnel to the east, or through a puddle of water in the southwest corner of the outdoors area. To the south, a dirt wall blocks a path containing four Swarming Sheargrubs, a Wayward Moon, and one entrance to the outer tunnel area. In the southeast corner are more Dawn Pustules, another Sunseed Berry, and four more Swarming Sheargrubs. In the northeast is one Dwarf Red Bulborb, the tunnel to the northwestern section and a 5 Pellet Posy in a flower pot. The northeast corner contains a Sunseed Berry and another entrance to the underground area, blocked off by a reinforced wall.

Taking the southern entrance to the underground tunnel leads to an darker, tunnel-like environment with a fixed camera. The southernmost portion of this is a pool of water containing two Sputtlefish and a pile of 20 nuggets. To the right is a raised platform with another pile of 20 nuggets and a shore to the water pool; both pieces of terrain lead to the eastern segment of the tunnel. To the left is a Fiery Blowhog and a passage to the western segment of the tunnel.

The western segment contains three Dwarf Bulbears and a Spotty Bulbear that has ingested Louie. Above them is a smaller burrowed tunnel containing five Purple Pikmin, three of which carry bomb rocks. In the alcoves furthest in the back are three White Candypop Buds, and a pile of 40 nuggets. Heading left will eventually lead to the northern segment of the tunnel.

The northern segment contains a total of seven Male Sheargrubs and a Watery Blowhog, as well another pile of 40 nuggets. Here a ramp can be taken to lead to the upper right platform of the eastern segment of the tunnel, but the lower passage between the northern and eastern segments is blocked by a dirt wall.

The lower terrain of the eastern segment contains a Whiptongue Bulborb and an Armored Cannon Larva, guarding a pile of 40 nuggets and two Blue Candypop Buds. To the right is a geyser to a raised platform, which leads to the upper platform in the southern segment; or a grounded passage to the lower shore in the southern segment.

The upper right ledge of the eastern segment contains a passageway to the central outdoor segment; this is the alternate entrance blocked by a reinforced wall. There is also a set of elevator platforms; one of the platforms is only accessible from this ledge. It begins with a Sunseed Berry that has a weight of 15. Removing it will bring down the other platform, revealing five White Pikmin, two of which carry bomb rocks.

Layout[edit]

In this version of the area, Captain Olimar and Alph begin in opposite ends of the outer tunnel while Louie is lying unconscious in the center of the map, very close to the SPERO. Olimar begins beneath a master Onion used for both Rock and Winged Pikmin; 10 Winged Pikmin sprouts are immediately available, and four Skitter Leaves and two eggs surround the Onion. To the left is a geyser blocked by crystal that leads to the upper left ledge, and a passage to the lower terrain of the southern segment of the tunnel.

The right part of the southern segment has lower terrain gated by a bamboo gate, and higher terrain containing two eggs and a bomb rock. The center contains a lake with eight Puckering Blinnows and a Waddlepus, and raised terrain in the back that leads to the outdoors segment. To the left is a passage to the western segment of the tunnel.

The western segment is where Alph begins. He is in a burrow-like tunnel above the main ground, and close to the drop onto the main ground there are five idle Rock Pikmin in the burrow. In an adjacent such burrow there are eight more Rock Pikmin to whistle. Beneath all the burrows there are 16 Phosbats meandering around, and several Common Glowcaps with which to dispatch them. Heading right will lead to the southern segment, and heading left will lead to the northern segment, although the rightmost part of the northern segment is blocked by a dirt wall.

The northern segment of the tunnel contains eight Desiccated Skitter Leaves spaced evenly on the ground. To the right of them are three Rock Pikmin sprouts, however the sprouts are in the crossfire of an Armored Cannon Larva on the raised ramp. Following that ramp left will lead to the rightmost ledge in the eastern segment, which contains another passage to the central outdoor segment.

The outdoor segment now has a completely barricaded center containing Louie, the SPERO for rescuing him, the Blue Onion and seven blue sprouts, two Blue Candypop Buds, several Pellet Posies and three Yellow Spectralids. The northeast corner has a crystal wall, the southeast a bamboo gate, the southwest an immobile cinder block, and the northwest a dirt wall, leading to another Waddlepus in the northeast corner. Two Arachnodes also inhabit the outer path of the outdoor area, both near and facing the two entrances to the tunnel area. Finally, a bomb rock is available in the northeastern plant pot, next to the crystal wall.
