The Mammoth Snootwhacker (オオハナタタキ?, lit.: "Large Nose-Knocker") is a large enemy in Pikmin 4. It is the older variant of the Miniature Snootwhacker. Like its younger form, it has a thick skin that prevents most attacks and allows it to crush non-Rock Pikmin with the weight of its trunk. These attacks pose a greater threat and larger radius given the increased size. Unlike the smaller version, it takes two charges from Oatchi to damage it, as only one will simply stun it instead of exposing the belly, its weak point.

Behavior

The Mammoth Snootwhacker will patrol a given area where it naturally spawns. When a Captain, Pikmin, or Oatchi enters this area, it will run up to them and begin attacking. Its first attack, the sweeping attack, is a long-range movement of its trunk in the area surrounding it, sending Pikmin every which way when it connects. The Snootwhacker telegraphs this attack with a few circular movements of its trunk. This attack will knock the player off of Oatchi, as well as knock both down if they are caught in the swing, but is otherwise non-lethal. After this attack, it will usually try to attack by curling its trunk up before slamming it down on anything directly in front of it. This will crush anything caught in the attack (except for Rock Pikmin, provided they are on soft ground). The player can, of course, send Oatchi at it with a Rush, causing it to trip up for a while. If hit again, it will be flipped over, exposing its belly. If given enough time in either knocked-down state, it will get back up and immediately use its crushing attack. If the player leaves its patroling area, the Snootwhacker will go back to normal, patrolling the area as expected.

Much like its miniature version, Oatchi is required to defeat this creature. With Oatchi, Rush down the Snootwhacker from its sides to cause it to enter a stunned state. After that, the player has ample time to follow up with another Rush, allowing you to expose its soft underbelly. It will typically flip itself back up after it takes about a third of its health, meaning you will need to repeat this process a few times to fell the beast. Simply being mindful of if and when it is going to attack, and which attack it will use is the main key to this fight, and it will give ample time to telegraph its attack and allow the player to position themselves accordingly. Provided the player has the appropriate upgrades connected to his Rush, Oatchi can usually knock down the Snootwhacker before it can even begin to attack the second time around. While it typically will not appear in an area where it can send Pikmin into more perilous situations (except for the one found in the Trial of the Sage Leaf), the player should still be mindful of where Pikmin end up if they are knocked away.

Dalmo's Notes
Olimar's Notes
“The long nose on this specimen has neither bone nor cartilage but is made up entirely of muscle and can be flexibly curved and extended. Its tough hide consists of densely layered collagen lattices that cover almost its entire body, leaving only the regular skin on the belly exposed.
The fully developed trunk is large and quite heavy, so the Mammoth Snootwhacker usually rolls it inward to carry it closer to its center of gravity. But if its territory is invaded, it will extend the trunk and frail it around, even using it to strike a perceived enemy.
Just like a juvenile Snootwhacker, their nose comprises a disproportional amount of their body weight, resulting in poor balance. If attacked from behind or from the side, even an adult of the species is easily knocked over.”Louie's Notes
