This article or section is a short summary on Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. |
This article or section is about an upcoming or recently released game. |
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for 3DS and Wii U?), also collectively and unofficially referred to as Super Smash Bros. 4, are the 4th games in the Super Smash Bros. series, as both games are essentially the same with some minor differences. Several Pikmin related elements return from Brawl, such as Olimar being a playable character, and the Distant Planet stage being on the 3DS version of the game. At the same time, many new elements from the Pikmin series also make a debut.
Olimar & Pikmin
Olimar returns as a veteran fighter, retaining much of the moveset he had in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Olimar is lighter in this installment.
Olimar's moves
Olimar keeps many of his standard moves from the previous game. Like every veteran, many moves have gone through a slight adjustment.
Standard Special move
Pikmin Pluck: Olimar plucks Pikmin. However, as stated, he can only carry three Pikmin, and to make the Pikmin use more strategy based, the Pikmin come in a set order (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple, repeat). The Pikmin that is next in line to be thrown has a pointer above its head. In the 3DS version, all Pikmin stay in their leaf stage and cannot develop buds or flowers.
Side Special move
Pikmin Throw: He throws Pikmin, and the Pikmin, unless Purple, will latch on and attack. Purples knock the victim back. In general, Pikmin are thrown further than they were in Brawl, and Pikmin may also carry small items back if thrown at one, such as Pitfalls and Capsules.
Up Special move
Winged Pikmin: Two Winged Pikmin appear and lift Olimar and his Pikmin up. Opposite to his recovery move in Brawl, Pikmin Chain, the more Pikmin he currently has, the worse his recovery is.
Down Special move
Call to Order: Just like in Brawl, all wayward Pikmin are called back. Unfortunately, There are far fewer super armor frames than there were in Brawl.
Final Smash
Olimar maintains the same Final Smash, End of Day, from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, the ship now plummets downward to the stage instead of falling upright. It has a larger blast radius as well.
Alph
Alph was first leaked by a leaker a week prior to the 3DS version's release in Japan. At the time, it was not known if Alph was a new character or an alternate costume.
A few days later, on September 11, 2014, Sakurai confirmed that Alph was an alternate costume for Olimar. He functions exactly the same as Olimar, even when it comes to the stage introduction and Final Smash. In other words, Alph still enters out of the Hocotate Ship when entering the stage, and still uses the Hocotate Ship for his Final Smash. He, like Olimar, is unable to use Rock Pikmin. Alph also seems to be a bit taller than he was in Pikmin 3 to match Olimar's body size.
Posts by Sakurai
"Pic of the day. The hero from Pikmin 3, Alph joins the battle!! He has pretty much the same set skills as Olimar since he's basically just his variation. He can't use Rock Pikmin either." [1]
"They are different characters, so they each get their own title treatment on the character-selection screen. See? It says Alph." [2]
Palette Swaps
Olimar retains his red spacesuit from Brawl. His green color has gone through changes, as well has his white one. Alph has green and pink suits based off of Charlie and Brittany, respectively. He also has a red suit that resembles Olimar himself.
Custom Moves
Like the other characters in the game, Olimar comes with 2 alternate moves for each of his special attacks, as well as exclusive equipment.
Standard Specials
- Hardy Pikmin Pluck: It takes longer to Pluck Pikmin, but they are more resistant, taking more damage to kill.
- Explosive Pikmin Pluck: Again, it takes longer to pluck Pikmin, but plucking them causes a small explosion that can damage opponents. However, Pikmin are easier to kill, and may even die without being attacked, forcing Olimar to pluck more Pikmin. The amount of damage given by the explosion also depends on the Pikmin type.
Side Specials
- Sticky Pikmin Throw: Pikmin are harder to shake off, but they deal less damage.
- Tackle Pikmin Throw: All Pikmin behave like Purple Pikmin and do not latch onto enemies.
Up Specials
- Winged Pikmin Jump: The recovery is faster, but upon parting ways with the Winged Pikmin, Olimar immediately falls into the helpless state. This attack also requires to be recharged. The attack gets weaker with each consecutive use; at full charge, Olimar has a lot better vertical recovery than the regular move.
- Mighty Winged Pikmin: The recovery has a set amount of travel distance.
Down Specials
- Order Tackle: Upon being called back, the Pikmin travel at a high arc and damage any opponent they hit. If they were latched onto someone, there's also a chance that opponent will be brought back with them. However, the move has ending lag, leaving Olimar vulnerable.
- Dizzy Whistle: All opponents within the vicinity of the attack gets slipped around and take slight damage, similar to Mario's cape.
Equipment
To do: Find all missing equipment. |
Olimar has 3 equipment classes which he can equip: Pikmin, Space Suit, and Boots, which correlate with Attack, Defense, and Speed respectively. There are a total of 23 Equipment pieces that are exclusive to Olimar and Alph only.

Easter Eggs
In the Boxing Ring stage, Olimar's alias is "Veteran Astronaut". Alph's is "Astronaut in Training". This is referring to the fact that Olimar has been on many space adventures, yet Alph has only been on one known adventure.
Guidance Conversations are conversations Pit and Palutena can have on the Palutena's Temple stage. These conversations give details about a fighter Pit is facing. The Guidance Conversation regarding Captain Olimar and Alph features Pit, Palutena, and Viridi. It is written below:
Pit: "Oh, its that explorer guy."
Palutena: "Did you know that Pikmin are named after Pikpik carrots, a vegetable native to Hocotate?"
Pit: "Huh. Guess you learn something new every day.
Viridi: "Enough with the pointless fun facts. Let's talk fighting strategy. Here's what I know about these Pikmin.
"Red Pikmin are strong!
"Yellow Pikmin fly high!
"Blue Pikmin have the mightiest throw!
"White Pikmin are fastest!
"Purple Pikmin are heavy and the most powerful!
"Be sure you remember all this, Pit."
Pit: "Uh, right."
Palutena: "There are also Winged Pikmin that don't attack you.
"Numerous Pikmin will weigh down the Winged Pikmin. And that's when you should attack!"

Stages
Garden of Hope
- Main article: Garden of Hope#In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
A stage based on the eponymous Garden of Hope will be available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. For the most part, the layout is identical to that of the Pikmin 3 area, with some changes to make it more akin to a Smash Bros. battle arena. One of the key hazards in the area is the Peckish Aristocrab. It scuttles around, knocking down the fragmented teacup and knocking back fighters who touch it. Wild Pikmin can fix the damage caused by the crab. Fighters can destroy the teacup and the climbing stick as well.

Distant Planet
- Main article: PNF-404#In the Super Smash Bros. series.
The Distant Planet stage is present as a Brawl Stage in the 3DS version. As a whole, not much has changed from Brawl, aside from some minor changes in the background. Just like in Brawl, the stage seems based off of The Forest of Hope and the Awakening Wood.
The Omega form of this stage takes away all the vegetation and leaves a simple dirt platform to fight on. This form also provides a better view of the background.
Hocotate Bomb
The Hocotate Bomb is a new item in both versions of the game. On Miiverse and the Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U official website, Sakurai posted an image of Sonic and Olimar next to a small model of the Hocotate Ship, in which he stated that it is a new bomb item that, when triggered, flies up in the air, then crashes back down much like the Warp Star item. However, it should be noted that the bomb will crash down abruptly, giving no indication of when it will drop. The explosion it causes is quite big, and could result in a KO if it hits an opponent. The Hocotate Ship is still used for Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day. Oddly enough, the trophy for the Hocotate Ship actually describes this item.
Post by Sakurai
"Pic of the day. Is this a spaceship from Hocotate? No-this is a bomb SHAPED like a spaceship. After liftoff, it will drop down when you least expect it." [3]
Smash Run
2 enemies from the Pikmin series appear in the 3DS exclusive mode, Smash Run.
Red Bulborb
The Red Bulborb appears in Smash Run. It is a basic enemy that attacks by charging and biting. It seems to be based off of its Pikmin 2 design, having purple eyes instead of blue. The Bulborb's attacks pack a massive punch and have a large amount of health, making them a formidable foe; arguably one of the hardest. It has a simple charging attack, a biting attack, and even a backwards jumping attack to attack players behind it. It is a semi-rare enemy to find.
Iridescent Glint Beetle
The Iridescent Glint Beetle is one of the rarest in Smash Run, only appearing in small caves that are normally out of the way. It will only reveal itself after walking over its hiding place. Once it pops out, hitting it will cause it to release golden coins. The more times you hit it, the more cash you get.
Post by Sakurai
"There are other bonus characters that appear in this game, too. Here's an Iridescent Glint Beetle from the Pikmin series. Keep hitting it!! Keep hitting it for gold!!" [4]
Smash Tour
In the Wii U exclusive mode Smash Tour, a Yellow Wollywog and the Plasm Wraith can appear on a space. Their purpose is currently unknown. (See Trophies in the Wii U version below for more info.)
Trophies
Trophies are a key part of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and there are quite a few Pikmin trophies.
3DS version
A good amount of trophies from the Pikmin franchise are present in the 3DS version, but not nearly as many as the number of trophies in Brawl. They are listed below.
Wii U version
So far, Brittany is the only intentionally revealed trophy from the Pikmin series for the Wii U version. However, assuming the that this installment follows the trophy pattern from the previous installments, Olimar, his Pikmin, and the Hocotate Bomb will all get trophies of their own in this version. Final Smash trophies have also been confirmed, so it's assumed End of Day will be included.
Post by Sakurai
"Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed." [5]
Unofficially announced
On October 23, Nintendo held a 50-Fact Extravaganza for Smash U, in which a few Pikmin trophies were found. Footage of the Smash Tour mode shows the trophies some of the players had collected, with trophies for the Yellow Wollywog and the Plasm Wraith being present in the video. The function of the Yellow Wollywog trophy is unknown in Smash Tour, but the Plasm Wraith trophy will heal the player if they block attacks using a shield. It is currently unknown whether these are actual in-game trophies, or if they're objects similar to trophies but exclusive to the mode. In addition, the Trophy Box mode footage shows a trophy for the Peckish Aristocrab. A Trophy Box for Pikmin is known as Distant Planet & Indigenous Creatures.
