Chillyhops (ヒヤシイモ?, lit.: "Chilled Potato") are an enemy in Pikmin 4. They are an ice variant of the Yellow Wollyhop and release icy air, when they land after jumping, which freezes all non Ice Pikmin. Aside from that, they behave identically to their non-ice counterparts. Chillyhops are also blue and white in coloration to go with their icy theme. However, they don't actually freeze Pikmin that touch them, unlike other ice enemies such as the Frosty Bulborb.

Behavior

Chillyhops act the exact same as Yellow Wollyhop. They usually sit in one place until they are disturbed by the player and their Pikmin. They then proceed to leap into the air, towards the player, and slam down, killing all Pikmin they land on. Unlike the Yellow Wollyhop, they also release an ice cold liquid substance when they land which freezes all non Ice Pikmin, the player and Oatchi, if the Thermal Defense has not been purchased. This also means Rock Pikmin's immunity to crush will not matter, as they will freeze and shatter upon impact. Chillyhops also shake Pikmin off of themselves after a while of Pikmin attacking them, this can leave Pikmin vulnerable to being crushed or frozen. Even though their coloration looks like they may freeze Pikmin who touch them, this is not the case and any Pikmin can attack them.

Appearance

The Chillyhop looks almost identical to the Yellow Wollyhop, with the only difference being the coloration. Chillyhops have a white and blue coloration compared to the yellow and green coloration of the Yellow Wollyhop.

Strategy

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Chillyhops can be defeated easily with a moderately large squad of Ice Pikmin. There are two ways to deal with them, you can either quickly throw all your Pikmin onto them, or you can throw them all on at once using Oath's rush ability. The seconds option is the best one as it also stuns the Chillyhop which give your Pikmin more time to attack them. If your Pikmin get shook off, just whistle them all back to you and repeat.

Notes

Dalmo's Notes

Slick and bulbous with a refreshingly frank face - that's one classy hopper! When it lands after jumping, it spills out cold air all around it. Mischievous AND cool? This little fella needs to leave some personality for the rest of us!

Olimar's Notes

When squashing prey with its mighty leap, the Chillyhop secretes a bodily fluid made up of ammonium nitrate, urea, and water. This causes an endothermic reaction that rapidly freezes its prey, making its attack all the more lethal.

After squashing the prey, it gets sucked up through the Chillyhop's belly. Since this species can store its food in a slightly chilled state without eating it for a time, it easily adapts to environments where prey is scarce.

Louie's Notes

Remove the tender meat surrounding the eyes, and stew with soy sauce. The collagen fibres are simply melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

  • Common name: Chillyhop. The word "Chilly" replaces "Wolly".
  • Japanese nickname: ヒヤシイモ?, lit.: "Chilled Potato". ヒヤシ? means "chilled", and イモ? means "potato".
  • Japanese name: ボタユキイモガエル?, lit.: "Wet Snow Potato Frog". ボタ? sounds similar to the onomatopoeia for wet and heavy snow, ポタポタ?, and ユキ? means snow. イモガエル?, lit.: "Potato Frog" is Japanese for "Wollyhop".
  • Scientific name: Amphicaris frigadae. Friga is latin for "cold", and it resembles the english word "frigid".
  • Internal names: ICEFROG. FROG is the internal name for Yellow Wollyhop, so the ice is added to distinguish the two.
  • Prerelease: Unknown
