Death

Because this subject has no official name, the name "Death" is conjectural.

Death occurs when an enemy reaches zero HP one way or another and can apply to captains, pikmin and enemies. Pikmin Death is commonly referred to as Pikmin Lost in the day results menu and Final results menu.

Death Statistics

Pikmin Lost and Enemy Death is usually easily accessible during normal gameplay.

Pikmin Lost

In Pikmin, the day results screen shows both pikmin 'lost in battle' and pikmin 'left behind' for any given day as well as a total count of both. On the Pikmin Lost counter on the final result screen does not differentiate from different types of hazards or Pikmin, combining the previous two separate counts.

In Pikmin 2, on both the day result screen and final result screen separates pikmin lost into seven separate categories: Battle, Sunset, Fire, Water, Electricity, Explosion, Poison and an overall count of all the above. The day results screen includes both a number for this day under 'Today' and a total counter under 'So Far' for each category. On the High score menu there is only a total counter, but it counters your personal three best scores for each category.

In Pikmin 3 the pikmin lost is split into five categories, one for each type of Pikmin in the story mode. There is also an overall counter underneath, showing how many pikmin was lost today (having a separate counter for sunset) as well as a total count Alongside a basic counter for each pikmin, a graph is displayed showing pikmin numbers throughout the day. On the final results screen it shows a separate death counter for each pikmin as well as a total count of all pikmin lost. All of this applies to Pikmin 3 Deluxe.

In Pikmin 4 the Pikmin lost statistics are always highlighted red. The day results menu has a separate pikmin lost for each of the eight types with an onion, as well as an overall counter. On the final results screen for both the main game and Olimar's Shipwreck Tale it is instead streamlined into one overall Pikmin Lost counter, displayed simply as 'Lost'.

In Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4, their piklopedias contain separate Pikmin Lost counters for each of their enemies. Pikmin 2 refers to it as "Pikmin Lost" and Pikmin 4 refers to it as "Pikmin Casualties".

Enemy Death

There is no Piklopedia in Pikmin and Pikmin 3, hence it has no counters for pikmin lost to a certain enemy or how many times and enemy has been defeated.

In Pikmin 2 the Piklopedia is introduced along with the statistics. The amount of enemies that have been killed is next to the text 'Creatures Defeated'.

In Pikmin 3 Deluxe, the counter for how many enemies have been killed by the player appears next to the text 'Killed'.

In Pikmin 4, the counter returns on the second slide of the 'Data' tab and under 'Defeated'.

Mechanics

Captain Death

When depleted of health a captain will die. What happens next depends on the game, more thoroughly documented here.

In Pikmin, if Olimar 'dies' he will be transported back to the ship in a cutscene, leaving all Pikmin on the field behind and instantly ending the day.

In Pikmin 2, if a captain 'dies', they will be knocked out and appear in front of the ship or be sucked up by the research pod. They cannot be used for the rest of the day, in or out of caves. If both die on the surface, a repeat of what happens in Pikmin happens. In caves, all Pikmin are lost as well as any pokos earned from treasures or enemies. In Challenge Mode, which takes place exclusively in caves, if a leader dies, the challenge ends. In 2-Player Battle if a captain dies, the opposing team wins.

In Pikmin 3 and its port to switch, the same thing applies as Pikmin 2's surface with a few differences. Firstly, there are now three leaders instead of two, leading to one more chance. Second, the captain is beamed up into the S.S. Drake and no longer lies in front of it. The mechanic functions the same in Mission Mode, functioning like Pikmin 2s challenge mode and in Bingo Battle, functiong like Pikmin 2s 2-Player Battle. However, in Bingo Battle, two captains can be used instead of one, giving an extra life.

In Pikmin 4, if the captain or Oatchi go down they will return to under the ship where they can be roused to get back up, but are otherwise unusable. If both are knocked out, a prompt will appear asking the player if they want to rewind.

Enemy Death

When an enemy's health drops to zero, it will usually die, with a few exceptions.

Flying enemies, like the Swooping Snitchbugs, Bumbling Snitchbugs, Careening Dirigibugs and Scornet Maestro cannot die in the air; they must fall to the ground first.

In all games besides Pikmin 3, Mandiblards lose health consistently before dying. In Pikmin 4, this includes Shearfleas and the health loss is accelerated greatly.

Certain enemies will revive themselves after death in every game, a list of which is found here.

Game Specific

In Pikmin:

  • Yellow Wollyhops and regular Wollyhops can crush Pikmin under them after being depleted of health and won't die until they land.
    • This post mortem crush is reflected in Pikmin 4's new family of Shellcakes.

In Pikmin 2:

  • Certain enemies can't begin their death animation if they are playing out an animation;
    • All the elemental dweevils, Fiery, Anode, Caustic and Munge, cannot die if they are in the middle of attacking.
    • Careening Dirigibugs also cannot die when creating a bomb rock.
    • Burrowing Snagret and Pileated Snagrets cannot die when rising out of the ground or eating Pikmin.
      • They CAN die if killed in the short time frame where they have a Pikmin in their mouths but haven't begun eating.
    • Yellow Wollyhops and regular Wollyhops cannot die while off the ground due to a jump.
    • Spotty Bulbears cannot die while shaking off Pikmin.
    • Adult Bulbmin cannot die during their shaking off and eating animations.

In Pikmin 3 and it's deluxe port:

Tracking Oddities

There are many exceptions and oddities with how deaths are tracked

Pikmin Lost

  • In any game with caves, Pikmin thrown into a candypop bud in a cave and left as sprouts, (or by any other enemy that sprouts e.g Swooping Snitchbug.) when a captain exits a cave even though inaccessible and removed, they do not count as Pikmin Lost.
  • Harmless enemies can kill Pikmin and have this change accounted for in their Piklopedia entries. For example the Puffy Blowhog could blow Pikmin into a pit and have it count to both a Pikmin casuality on the Piklopedia and a Pikmin Lost on the results screen.

Pikmin 3

Pikmin 4

  • Glow Pikmin lost are not counted, as they return to the Lumiknoll as stated in its Piklopedia entry.
    • It could also be stated that Glow Pikmin are not technically Pikmin and therefore do not count. However, they do count towards individual enemies 'Pikmin Casualties' counters.
  • Pikmin from dandori challenges and dandori battles do not count towards 'Pikmin Lost'.

Enemies Defeated

Pikmin 2

  • Enemies killed by friendly fire count towards Creatures Defeated.
  • Even though killing a buried Armored Cannon Larva does not unlock its piklopedia entry, it does increase the Creatures Defeated counter.

Trivia

  • In Pikmin 4, Breadbugs and Giant Breadbugs are the only enemies in the game incapable of ever increasing their 'Pikmin Casualties'counter.
