The scarab beetle family is a family of enemies in Pikmin 2, Pikmin 4, and Hey! Pikmin. The members of this family can all produce electricity.

Members

Main article: Anode Beetle.

The Anode Beetle is an enemy in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4. It walks around harmlessly, periodically stopping in place and charging up electricity. If another Anode Beetle is nearby, the two will create a current of electricity between them, which will instantly kill non-Yellow Pikmin. If a beetle is alone, it will cause no harm. Its carapace makes it invulnerable to attacks, so a Pikmin must be tossed directly from above in order to flip it around and make it expose its soft underbelly – its only weak point.

Electripede

Main article: Electripede.

The Electripede is a cave-dwelling, centipede-like Scarab Beetle introduced in Hey! Pikmin. It looks unlike any other member of its family, with a segmented body, bright yellow and orange stripes, and two pairs of small legs. Under normal circumstances, they are harmless, but when hit they will stop in place and emit electricity that will shock anything nearby.

Widemouthed Anode Beetle

A Widemouthed Anode Beetle.
Main article: Widemouthed Anode Beetle.

The Widemouthed Anode Beetle is a subspecies of Anode Beetle found in Hey! Pikmin. It bears a strong resemblance to a standard Anode Beetle, but its head is larger and more clearly separated from its body. It is also considerably larger than the Anode Beetle. Unlike Anode Beetles, Widemouthed Anode Beetles are actively hostile and will devour any Pikmin they come across. They emit a constant stream of electricity, and will electrocute any Pikmin that aren't Yellow Pikmin. Once again, their shell protects them from damage, so several Pikmin must be tossed onto its back in order to flip it over and make it vulnerable.

Naming

This family's name is based on the real-life scarabaeidae family. This is also alluded to in the Anode Beetle's genus name, Scarabum.
