The mawdad family is a family of centipede-like creatures introduced in Pikmin 3, although the family went unclassified until Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It contains only one member, the Armored Mawdad, which the family is named after. Members belong to the tuberclipeum genus.

Main article: Armored Mawdad.

Armored Mawdad is the first boss in Pikmin 3, and the boss of the Garden of Hope. It is a massive beast with a multitude of small gecko-like legs, a large head, yellow eyes, a bluish-green underbelly, a gaping mouth, and large curved mandibles. The boss crawls about and is able to climb up the sides of walls as a means of fleeing. Its shell is crystal and can be broken by Rock Pikmin to expose the soft skin underneath.

Naming

The family name mawdad contains maw, a word used to describe the thick jaws of a predator, which members posses. The dad part may be an indication of authority.

The family genus, tuberclipeum, includes the word "tuber". This is because potatoes are a type of tuber, in reference to the Japanese name of the Armored Mawdad, which contains the word "potato". The word clipeum, meanwhile, is Latin for "shield", in reference to the Mawdad's crystal shell.
