Big Flowers are plants in pb that can be found throughout the world at set points of interest. They appear on the map screen with circles around them with a radius of 40 meters. If a player is planting flowers within the Big Flower's radius, it will contribute towards blooming the Big Flower. After 300 flowers are planted in the radius, the flower will bloom, and within the first hour after it blooms, it will reward players who plant flowers nearby with an expedition to collect a fruit from it. (If a player has not yet unlocked the ability to do expeditions, they will not get a reward from a Big Flower.) Any player that walks within 100 meters of a blooming Big Flower can swipe vertically across it while viewing its information page to gain 1-2 nectar, even if they have already retrieved the fruit. The nectar provided by the Big Flower depends on the type of flowers that were planted in the radius.

Types
Types
When a Big Flower blooms, the type of flower it becomes depends on the flowers planted inside its radius. The color of the flower (and therefore the type of fruit it provides) depends on the color of the planted flowers, and the species of the flower (and therefore the species of nectar the fruit provides) depends on the species of the planted flowers.
The type of a flower consists of 2 parts: the flower species and the flower color. When a Big Flower blooms, both the species and color of the flower it becomes depends on the flowers planted inside its radius. The species of the flower (and therefore the species of nectar the fruit provides) is determined first and depends on the species of the planted flowers. The color of the flower (and therefore the type of fruit it provides) depends on the color of the planted flowers, limited to the colors available for the determined species.

Big Flower Forecast
Every month, Niantic publishes what they call the Big Flower Forecast, which introduces a new flower into the game, dubbed the Flower of the Month, lists the available seasonal flowers and nectar, and announces the month’s Community Day. This forecast changes monthly, but occasionally is the same for two months in a row. A Big Flower with mostly regular flowers planted around it will have a chance of blooming into any of the seasonal flowers available in the current Big Flower Forecast.

Species
There are 2 categories of flower species: regular flowers (from standard petals), and seasonal flowers (such as pansies, camellias, and roses). If only regular flowers are planted within the radius, the Big Flower will likely be some color of regular flower, with a chance of becoming one of the seasonal flowers in the current Big Flower Forecast. If most of the flowers planted within the radius are the same seasonal flower, the Big Flower will most likely bloom into that seasonal flower, though with some additional complexity and randomness. The chances of different flower species blooming has varied throughout the game's lifespan, and events have frequently added temporary boosts to certain probabilities.

Color
Color
A Big Flower's eventual bloomed color is determined by the color of the flowers that players plant within, with additional complexity added by white flowers. For red, blue, and yellow flowers, having a majority of that color of flower planted within the radius will cause the Big Flower to grow into that color. For a Big Flower to grow into a white flower, at least 70% of the flowers in the radius need to be either white, or another color that is not the most prevalent non-white color, and when the 300 flower goal is reached, the color of the Big Flower will still be randomly picked. When this occurs the flower species is first determined, and then the color is picked based on odds unique to the species.
A Big Flower's eventual bloomed color is determined by the color of the flowers that players plant within, with additional complexity added by white flowers and flowers that aren't available in all 4 colors. For red, blue, and yellow flowers, having a majority of that color of flower planted within the radius will cause the Big Flower to grow into that color, provided that it's available for the determined species.

For Big Flowers where at least 70% of the flowers planted in the radius are white or where the determined species lacks a variant in the most prevalent color, then when the 300 flower goal is reached, the color of the Big Flower will be randomly picked based on odds unique to the species. This means that it is impossible to guarantee a white bloom from a Big Flower if there are multiple color variants.

Flower type predictions
The likely eventual color and species of a Big Flower is displayed in the screen that appears when an unbloomed Big Flower is tapped. The type displayed does not guarantee that it will be the final type of the Big Flower, because it could still change as more flowers are planted. The colors "red", "blue", and "yellow" will display in this message if that color of flower is the most common non-white color within the radius, and if the 70% rule for white flowers has not been reached. The color "white" is never displayed here, as if the 70% rule has been reached, the color will be displayed as "???" instead. For example, if there are 40 white flowers and 30 red flowers within a Big Flower's radius, the Big Flower will say it will be red, because there are less than 70% white and non-red flowers. If an additional 20 yellow and 20 blue flowers were planted within, they would contribute to white as they are less common than red flowers, and the Big Flower would display "???" as its eventual color.

When at least one of the seasonal flowers in the current Big Flower Forecast lacks a variant in the current majority color, the display will always read "???" when normal flowers of that color are planted. This is because if the Big Flower mutates into one of the species without a variant in the majority color, it will not bloom into the majority color. For example, whenever Cherry Blossoms (only available in white) are in the Big Flower Forecast, every Big Flower with only normal flowers planted below it will display "???", as white always displays “???”, and Cherry Blossoms are a species that lacks all 3 of the other colors.

Technical details
The color and species of flowers planted under the Big Flower determine what the bloom will be.
* The flower species is determined before the color.
* Planting 156 or more of a given flower species around a Big Flower usually guarantees that type (unless it mutates, see next bullet point).
** If enough flowers to spawn to a given species (156 or more) are planted under a Big Flower, there is a small chance (~3%) it will mutate to another flower type, such as the current Flower of the Month, or other seasonal flowers in the Big Flower Forecast.
* Planting 156 or more of a color locks in the color, provided the color is not white, and that a variant in that color exists for the determined species.
** If a majority of the flowers planted are white or an unavailable color for the blooming flower species and that species has more than one color variant, it is random which color blooms.
*** There is no way to force white blooms if the species has multiple color variants.
*** The color is picked based on odds unique to the species.
** If a majority of the flowers planted are white or an unavailable color for the blooming flower species, but over 100 of a secondary color that is available for that flower species, it will bloom that secondary color.

Species
Color odds per species
There are 2 main categories of flower types: regular flowers (from standard petals), and seasonal flowers (such as pansies, camellias, and roses). The chances of different flower species blooming has varied throughout the game's lifespan, and events have frequently added temporary boosts to certain probabilities.
Each species of flower has a unique distribution of colors that will be used to randomly determine the color of a Big Flower when that species is bloomed and the majority color is either white or a color that is unavailable for that species. The following is experimental data sourced from this spreadsheet, so it may not be perfectly accurate.

Throughout the game's lifespan, the flower species Big Flowers commonly provide has changed frequently to add variety. Originally these changes happened in a rather inconsistent way, but since March 2022 there has been a consistent monthly flower system. Whenever a Community Day event occurs, all Big Flowers will bloom into the flower the event is themed around for the day, no matter what flowers are planted in the radius.

Whenever a Community Day event occurs, all Big Flowers will bloom into the flower the event is themed around for the duration of the day, no matter what flowers are planted in the radius.

When the game was released in October 2021, there were two tiers of rare flowers: pansies and roses. Planting regular flowers in the radius would usually make the Big Flower bloom into a regular flower, but there was a small chance that it would bloom into a pansy. The second Community Day on 18 introduced poinsettia flowers. After that date, poinsettias replaced pansies as the main rare flower, though planting mostly pansies inside the radius continued to bloom a pansy, and this method of blooming out-of-season flowers has continued ever since. Planting poinsettias or pansies had a low chance of making a rose bloom.

On 1, camellias were introduced, and these joined poinsettias as rare flowers that had a low chance of blooming when regular flowers were planted. After the Community Day on 22, poinsettias were no longer available this way. On 11, plum blossom flowers were introduced, and now, planting regular flowers has a chance of blooming pansies, poinsettias, camellias, or plum blossoms. The Valentine's Day event on 14 made roses very common for the day and lowered the rarity of the type.

From March 2022, the system of flower availability from Big Flowers was simplified, and now each month, planting regular flowers around a Big Flower has a chance of blooming a selection of seasonal flowers. The second tier of flower rarity was removed, and now roses are treated the same way as other rare flowers. Community Days continue to change the flower availability for that day only. The following table shows the flower types available each month:

Community Days continue to change the flower availability for that day/weekend only and feature the current Flower of the Month.

From August 2023, Pikmin with the Flower of the Month blooming on their head gain an additional point of strength in Mushroom battles compared to Pikmin with other seasonal flowers blooming on their head. In months where only one color of a particular flower species was the Flower of the Month, all colors of that species gave this attack boost.

When the game launched initially, there used to be a rarity hierarchy, where Regular Flowers had the possibility to bloom into Pansies, and Pansies had the possibility to bloom into Roses. But once the flower forecast was simplified, this rarity hierarchy was removed, but the feature for seasonal flowers to bloom into other seasonal flowers stayed.

It is roughly a 3% chance for a mutation to happen. Mutations are flowers within the same season as the base flower, often being the flower introduced after the base flower.

Blooming a desired flower type
Event missions often require specific flower types to be planted, most of which are seasonal flowers whose nectar can be scarce. Because of this, it is often useful to control what a Big Flowers becomes to get more of a specific nectar. This is most easily done by finding a Big Flower that has a precondition of the full 300 more flowers until it blooms, although this method can be used as long as the precondition still requires at least 256 flowers.
The requirements for blooming a Big Flower into a specific flower type are as follows:
* 156 or more of the flowers must be of the desired species.
* 100 or more of the flowers must be of the desired color.
* There must be no other color with more flowers planted than the desired color except white or a color not available for the desired species.
Since the species and the color are decided separately and have different thresholds to meet, you can bloom a specific type even if you don't have any petals of that type, as long as you have some of any species with the desired color and some of the desired species in either white or 2 separate colors.
One simple method for blooming a specific flower type even when lacking petals of that type is:
* 102-144 flowers of any species in the desired color.
* 78-99 <code>color1</code> flowers of the desired species.
* 78-99 <code>color2</code> flowers of the desired species.
* both <code>color1</code> and <code>color2</code> can be white, the desired color, or both different.
Note that this method is not guaranteed to work for white flowers. However, following this method for white blooms will give you white bloom attempts without spending the corresponding white nectar. Each of these attempts become a random color with a chance of being white, with odds unique to each flower species.
Big Flower Postcards
In addition to planting 300 flowers in the radius of a Big Flower to make it bloom, players can also exchange 150 petals in order to automatically bloom one by pressing the "Use petals to make flowers bloom!" button that appears at the top of a Big Flower's information menu, which rewards a specially designed postcard. This method does not require the player to be in the Big Flower's radius, and can be done as long as the flower can be seen on the map screen. Big Flowers that have been bloomed using this method function the same way as Big Flowers that bloomed by flowers that were planted around them; players who plant any flowers in the radius are rewarded with a fruit expedition and can swipe down on the flower to get 1-3 nectar. In addition, 7 nectar is rewarded when obtaining the special postcard.
Blooming a Big Flower using this method ultimately results in using many more petals than would be used for planting around the flower, meaning players should plant normally if they want to maximize on total nectar rewarded from blooming a Big Flower. The purpose of this method is obtaining special customizable postcards that can only be obtained through this method of blooming a Big Flower.
* Once the button to start the process has been pressed, a menu of all the player's petals opens, asking the player to pick which flower type to use.
* Once a flower type is selected, a menu of all the player's Pikmin opens, asking them to pick 1-5 Pikmin that will appear on the postcard. At least 1 Pikmin must be chosen.
* Once Pikmin have been selected, players can press the GO button in the bottom right of the menu, and a unique animation will play as the Pikmin that were sent will have the flower types that was used appear on their stem, the Big Flower blooms, and the special postcard appears on the screen, with the option to either receive or discard it.
** Pikmin that are sent to appear on the Postcard will have their friendship level slightly increased.
The Postcard that is obtained through this method will have a special pastel flower color design, and will feature lifelog artwork of the flower type that was used to bloom the Big Flower.
This feature can also be used on Big Flowers that have already bloomed. When this is done, the Big Flower does not bloom into the flower type that was picked to use petals automatically on, only requires 80 petals for the postcard to be obtained, and the button to start the process now reads "Use petals to get a postcard!". As the flower will not be replaced by the type that is picked for the postcard, the chosen flower type only affects the lifelog artwork that appears on the postcard.

Big Flowers are plants in Pikmin Bloom that can be found throughout the world at set points of interest. They appear on the map screen with circles around them with a radius of 40 meters. If a player is planting flowers within the Big Flower's radius, it will contribute towards blooming the Big Flower. After 300 flowers are planted in the radius, the flower will bloom for 23 hours. If a player plants any flowers in the radius of the Big Flower within the first hour after it blooms, they will be rewarded with an expedition to collect a fruit from it. (If a player has not yet unlocked the ability to do expeditions, they will not get a reward from a Big Flower.) Any player that walks within 100 meters of a blooming Big Flower can swipe vertically across it while viewing its information page to gain 1-3 nectar, even if they have already retrieved the fruit. The nectar provided by the Big Flower and the fruit it rewards will match the bloomed flower type, which depends on the type of flowers that were planted in the radius.

There are some flowers on the map that look like Big Flowers but have a rainbow bud. These are a different kind of flower, called a Special Spot.

Stages[edit]

Viewing information about a Big Flower in bud form in Pikmin Bloom. Notice that blue rose flowers are planted around it, and the box below says it will be a blue rose. The location information has been covered up.
A Big Flower in bud form.

A Big Flower has 3 stages:

  • Sprout: players have planted 0 to 49 flowers within.
  • Bud: players have planted 50 to 299 flowers within.
  • Blooming: players have planted 300 or more flowers within.

Each time a Big Flower grows to its next stage, it will flash in light and change in appearance. In addition, when more than 150 flowers are planted in the radius, the bud will flash and falling petals will temporarily surround it.

Types[edit]

The type of a flower consists of 2 parts: the flower species and the flower color. When a Big Flower blooms, both the species and color of the flower it becomes depends on the flowers planted inside its radius. The species of the flower (and therefore the species of nectar the fruit provides) is determined first and depends on the species of the planted flowers. The color of the flower (and therefore the type of fruit it provides) depends on the color of the planted flowers, limited to the colors available for the determined species.

Big Flower Forecast[edit]

Every month, Niantic publishes what they call the Big Flower Forecast, which introduces a new flower into the game, dubbed the Flower of the Month, lists the available seasonal flowers and nectar, and announces the month’s Community Day. This forecast changes monthly, but occasionally is the same for two months in a row. A Big Flower with mostly regular flowers planted around it will have a chance of blooming into any of the seasonal flowers available in the current Big Flower Forecast.

Species[edit]

Color[edit]

Flower type predictions[edit]

Technical details[edit]

The color and species of flowers planted under the Big Flower determine what the bloom will be.

  • The flower species is determined before the color.
  • Planting 156 or more of a given flower species around a Big Flower usually guarantees that type (unless it mutates, see next bullet point).
    • If enough flowers to spawn to a given species (156 or more) are planted under a Big Flower, there is a small chance (~3%) it will mutate to another flower type, such as the current Flower of the Month, or other seasonal flowers in the Big Flower Forecast.
  • Planting 156 or more of a color locks in the color, provided the color is not white, and that a variant in that color exists for the determined species.
    • If a majority of the flowers planted are white or an unavailable color for the blooming flower species and that species has more than one color variant, it is random which color blooms.
      • There is no way to force white blooms if the species has multiple color variants.
      • The color is picked based on odds unique to the species.
    • If a majority of the flowers planted are white or an unavailable color for the blooming flower species, but over 100 of a secondary color that is available for that flower species, it will bloom that secondary color.

Color odds per species[edit]

Each species of flower has a unique distribution of colors that will be used to randomly determine the color of a Big Flower when that species is bloomed and the majority color is either white or a color that is unavailable for that species. The following is experimental data sourced from this spreadsheet, so it may not be perfectly accurate.

Throughout the game's lifespan, the flower species Big Flowers commonly provide has changed frequently to add variety. Originally these changes happened in a rather inconsistent way, but since March 2022 there has been a consistent monthly flower system.

Planting pansies in the radius would usually make the Big Flower bloom into a pansy, but there was a small chance that it would bloom into a rose. This made roses very hard to get.

The second Community Day on December 18th, 2021 introduced poinsettia flowers. After that date, poinsettias replaced pansies as the main rare flower, though planting mostly pansies inside the radius continued to bloom a pansy, and this method of blooming out-of-season flowers has continued ever since. Planting poinsettias or pansies had a low chance of making a rose bloom.

On January 1st, 2022, camellias were introduced, and these joined poinsettias as rare flowers that had a low chance of blooming when regular flowers were planted. After the Community Day on January 22nd, poinsettias were no longer available this way. On February 11th, plum blossom flowers were introduced, and now, planting regular flowers had a chance of blooming pansies, poinsettias, camellias, or plum blossoms. The Valentine's Day event on February 14th made roses very common for the day and lowered the rarity of the type.

From March 2022, the system of flower availability from Big Flowers was simplified and the second tier of flower rarity was removed, with roses now being treated the same way as other rare flowers (now called Seasonal Flowers). After this change, planting regular flowers around a Big Flower has a chance of blooming a selection of seasonal flowers from the current Big Flower Forecast. The Big Flower Forecast changes monthly, but occasionally is the same for two months in a row. Additionally, each monthly Big Flower Forecast introduced a new flower, dubbed the Flower of the Month.

Mutations[edit]

A mutation is a rare chance of a Big Flower blooming into a different but related flower.

There is roughly a 3% chance for a mutation to happen. Mutations are flowers within the same season as the base flower, often being the flower introduced after the base flower.

The following table shows which seasonal flowers can mutate to what other seasonal flower:

Blooming a desired flower type[edit]

Flow chart of how to bloom a Big Flower into a type you want.
A flowchart representing the process for blooming a desired type of Big Flower.

  • 156 or more of the flowers must be of the desired species.
  • 100 or more of the flowers must be of the desired color.
  • There must be no other color with more flowers planted than the desired color except white or a color not available for the desired species.

  • 102-144 flowers of any species in the desired color.
  • 78-99 color1 flowers of the desired species.
  • 78-99 color2 flowers of the desired species.
  • both color1 and color2 can be white, the desired color, or both different.

Note that this method is not guaranteed to work for white flowers. However, following this method for white blooms will give you white bloom attempts without spending the corresponding white nectar. Each of these attempts become a random color with a chance of being white, with odds unique to each flower species.

Big Flower Postcards[edit]

A Big Flower Postcard that was obtained by using petals to bloom a Big Flower automatically in Pikmin Bloom.
A postcard that was obtained by automatically blooming a Big Flower using petals.

  • Once the button to start the process has been pressed, a menu of all the player's petals opens, asking the player to pick which flower type to use.
  • Once a flower type is selected, a menu of all the player's Pikmin opens, asking them to pick 1-5 Pikmin that will appear on the postcard. At least 1 Pikmin must be chosen.
  • Once Pikmin have been selected, players can press the GO button in the bottom right of the menu, and a unique animation will play as the Pikmin that were sent will have the flower types that was used appear on their stem, the Big Flower blooms, and the special postcard appears on the screen, with the option to either receive or discard it.
    • Pikmin that are sent to appear on the Postcard will have their friendship level slightly increased.

Trivia[edit]

  • The places where Big Flowers appear on the map are taken from Wayspots in Niantic's Wayfarer system. This means that they will frequently appear at the same locations as features in other Niantic games, including PokéStops and Gyms in Pokémon GO, and Portals in Ingress.
  • Big Flowers in military areas cannot ever bloom, as flowers cannot be planted there.
