Attacks Freezes and Eats Pikmin

Frosty Bulborbs are large ice enemies found in Pikmin 4. These enemies resemble Bulborbs in appearance, but are blue in coloration and have ice crystals covering their back and midsection. Frosty Bulborbs act almost identical to other Bulborbs, the only difference is that they can freeze Pikmin other than Ice Pikmin if the ice crystals on their back have not been melted.

Behavior

Frosty Bulborbs act just like other Bulborbs in that they lie asleep on the ground waiting until something wakes them up during the day, but patrol their territory at night. If awoken or they notice prey, they will proceed to change and attack the player and their squad of Pikmin by biting at them, up to a max of five Pikmin per bite, until they have left their territory. They will then stop chasing and return to their territory area and patrol for a little while until falling back to sleep. Since this Bulborb has ice crystals on its back, all Pikmin other than Ice Pikmin will be frozen solid if they touch any part of the Bulborb. The only way to counteract this is to melt the ice using fire. Once the ice has been melted, they act like normal Bulborb until the ice is regenerated after a little while.

Appearance

Frosty Bulborbs look very similar to normal Bulborb but they are blue in coloration instead of red. Similar to the Hairy Bulborb, the back and the face share similar colors, with the nose being colored separately, in this instance pink. They also have a layer of ice crystals littering their back and midsection. Therefore, their back and spots cannot be seen unless the ice is melted.

Strategy

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

These Bulborbs freeze any Pikmin other than Ice Pikmin unless the ice on their back has been melted by a fire starter or a flame vent. Therefore, Ice Pikmin are the ideal choice to fight them. Using a large squad of Pikmin and swarming them is effective, but you can also circle around them and throw Pikmin onto their back. The most effective way to defeat them, is to have a large squad of Pikmin and, using Oatchi, rush at the Bulborb to throw them all on at once. If the ice has been melted using a firestarter, any type can be used and Oatchi will not need the Thermal Defense.

Notes

Dalmo's Notes

A creature that thrives in the coldest climates, its ice-coated haunches shimmer like a living jewel in the frigid air. You can admire the way it sparkles to your heart's content, but don't get too close! You'll get frosty-frozen on the spot if you touch it!

Olimar's Notes

A Bulborb with large amounts of ice and frost covering its midsection. It's unusual to find ice such as this attached to a living organism, as it's cold enough to freeze small animals and regenerate any ice mass that gets broken off.

This Bulborb species's intercellular stores of sugars, amino acids, and organic acids provide it with a plantlike resistance to freezing, making it possible for the Bulborb to touch the ice without freezing itself.

Louie's Notes

Sear the rich and fatty meat on both sides in a dab of butter, then sprinkle generously with fresh thyme. For those who prefer leaner cuts, I recommend the tip of the nose.
