'''Male Sheargrubs''' are creatures present in both [[Pikmin series|Pikmin games]].  The species is one of the smallest of those in the series, along with the similar [[Female Sheargrub]]s, and are purple in colour.  They kill [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]] by eating them, but can only eat one at a time.  They appear only to be found in warm [[area]]s, both above and [[cave|below ground]], where they spend most of their time below the surface, only emerging in the games to attack Pikmin or [[captain]].  Male Sheagrubs exist in groups of 3 or 4, often along with female members of the species.


The '''Male Sheargrub''' ({{j|ウジンコ♂|Ujinko ♂|Tiny Maggot ♂}}) is an [[enemy]] found in the {{ps}}. Male Sheargrubs can easily be distinguished from [[Female Sheargrub]]s by their dark purple color and large mandibles. Unlike the females, which are believed to scavenge dead [[Pikmin family|Pikmin]], Male Sheargrubs are predatory and extremely aggressive, and will attack [[leader]]s and Pikmin when the opportunity presents itself. Sheargrubs have lost both their legs and wings in an odd twist of evolution, and have adapted to a life spent mostly underground.
In [[Pikmin (game)|Pikmin 1]], these bugs are completely invulnerable while they're chomping down on a Pikmin ''except'' when a Pikmin is tossed directly on top of it. This was fixed in [[Pikmin 2]], allowing players to kill them even if they have a Pikmin in their mandibles. Sheargrubs, both male and female, will also deconstruct any nearby [[Bridge|stick bridges]], which makes defeating these pesky creatures soon after you land a top priority if you want to avoid having to rebuild them.


In {{P1}}, any damage dealt to one while it's eating a Pikmin will not take effect until after that Pikmin's death. The only way to defeat one while it has a Pikmin in its grasp is to land a direct hit on its back with a [[throw]], killing it instantly. This was changed in {{P2}} and stayed that way for future games, allowing players to still kill them in any way, even while they're eating Pikmin. Sheargrubs, both male and female, will also deconstruct any nearby [[Bridge|stick bridges]], which makes defeating these pesky creatures soon after landing a top priority to avoid having to rebuild them.

The species is relatively weak compared to most other creatures, but if one happens to get a hold of a Pikmin, it is invincible to swarming until the Pikmin dies. If you can throw a Pikmin onto the Sheargrub's back, it will die instantly, and the Pikmin will be saved. Attack with Olimar if possible. If there is water nearby, like in [[the Forest of Hope]], lead them into the water. Since they cannot fly, and will keep following you, they will drown.


These creatures are also related to the [[Shearwig]], beyond sharing families. They are both male mandiblards that attack in the same fashion, and in some cases, specifically [[The Forest Navel]], appear in large swarms together.

In ''Pikmin 3'', they can [[Health#Regeneration|regenerate health]] while buried, and are able to fully regenerate in 30 seconds, just like the Female Sheargrubs. If only 20% of their health remains, they return to their original spot to bury and heal, and when their health reaches 50%, they come out again, if there are any prey in range. While they're regenerating, their [[HUD#Health wheel|health wheel]] will be constantly visible above the ground.
