How does this thing as a species live if its only defence is to go kamizake on predators?

The answer to that is quite simple. Dweevils mimic the object they carry on their backs and, as it was said some times by Olimar on his journal entries, the dweevils take the role of the object they're carrying a bit too seriously. The reason of bomb-rocks is to explode, so the dweevil acts like a bomb-rock: it explodes. So if it doesn't come into contact with any living thing it survives to the next generation? Kind of odd, but i'd buy it. Also if it goes kamizake when even non threats go near it, how does it get to mate without exploding?
