River (渓流?, lit.: "Mountain Stream") is the third mission in Olimar's Assignment, representing the third day of Olimar and Louie's third trip to PNF-404. It takes place in the Twilight River.

Plot

Olimar's Expedition Log: River Survey

[The scene shows Captain Olimar facing the camera. He is next to some rocks near the shore, on the second half of the area, between the pink 5 pellet Pellet Posy and the bamboo gate.]

This is Olimar, captain of the S.S. Dolphin.

I've been to this planet twice before already. I never tire of hunting for treasure here!

I've traveled far and wide across this planet during my several trips here.

But I'm only now noticing that several of my notes and log entries have gone missing.

It must be a memory leak with my file-management routine. I think I heard someone in IT talking about that once.

Once I'm back on Hocotate, I'll try to convince the president we need an upgrade.

[Olimar looks to his left to the area where Scornets are first found in-game, and sees Louie and some Pikmin running around a swarm of Scornets. The scene then returns to Olimar.]

Maybe I can get an upgrade to my partner while I’m at it.

[Louie is heard tripping and falling offscreen, followed by the sound of a Scornet stinging him and him grunting in pain.]

This cutscene is identical to the Secret File Olimar's Expedition Log - At the River -, but with slightly different subtitles.

Synopsis

In relation to Story Mode, this takes place sometime before the Koppaites have reached Twilight River, as there is no indication of their presence, such as the lily pads being available in this part of the area. Louie has also yet to be captured by the Scornet Maestro, which should have happened before the S.S. Drake landed in the area for the first time. There are also several missing objects, such as bridge fragments and clipboards (though their absence could just be for gameplay reasons and not canon). It is likely Olimar buried the Scorch Guard during this visit, as this would be the last time he visits the area before his capture, though this is not seen.

Description

The first area of the Twilight River where the S.S. Drake and the Onion land is inaccessible due to a wall, and the arena where you fight the Scornet Maestro is blocked because the bridge is missing. The player also can't reach the area after the gate that in Story Mode can only be opened by Winged Pikmin, which means that the player can't reach the upper ledge where you were supposed to go to get some bridge pieces. The river also doesn't flow anymore, so there are no lily pads to get on.

The day starts on the right side of the river in an upper position: here, in Story Mode, you can find some clipboards that you needed to tilt to get some bridge pieces. You can get down from both directions (north and south) and you can reach the other side of the river by simply going under it with Blue Pikmin or using a bridge located to the north that is blocked by an Electric gate.

Guide

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Once the day loads, whistle Louie, the Red Pikmin and the Yellow Pikmin. After that go in front and pluck the 3 Yellow Pikmin sprouts. After that split into two groups, one with Reds and Yellows and another with Blues. The captain in the Blue group would go left to the nearest Blue Pikmin sprouts to pluck them and the Red and Yellow group would go right to the Cupid's Grenade. Defeat the two Dwarf Bulborbs and pluck the Yellow Pikmin sprouts after that swap to the Blue group to pluck the first Blue Pikmin sprouts beware of the Dwarf Bulborb in that area before bringing back the Crunchy Deluge then go to the next set of Blue Pikmin. Swap back to the Red and Yellow group to dig up the Cupid's Grenade with 1 Pikmin. Then go to the Electric gate and charge all your Yellow Pikmin to it before swapping to the Blue group. Once getting your Blue Pikmin defeat the Toady Bloyster in the water before grabbing the two Juicy Gaggles and the Zest Bomb it released. Return back to the SPERO to retrieve the 10 Blue Pikmin around this time the Electric gate would have been demolished so swap back to the Red and Yellow group. Pluck the Yellow Pikmin sprouts just by the Electric gate and then go right to defeat the Dwarf Bulborb and pluck the Red Pikmin sprouts. Then defeat the 2 Bearded Amprats collect the two Stellar Extrusions and pluck the last Yellow Pikmin sprouts to collect the Dawn Pustules. Swap back to the Blue group defeat the two Puckering Blinnows and obtain the Juicy Gaggle repeat this process with the two Puckering Blinnows and the Juicy Gaggle. After this point wait for the remaining items to be delivered and the Platinum Medal should be yours.

Briefing

There’s treasure to be had on land and water, and I want it all! Oh, and don’t bother waiting around for lily pads. The water’s not flowing. Find another way!

During gameplay

In some situations during gameplay, Olimar or Louie will leave a comment.

Near the SPERO or Onion OlimarI hear a river nearby... Hopefully there'll be some Blue Pikmin there. LouieDo you hear that? ...Water! And water could mean fish!

Assignment Report

With Louie's help, we’ve collected a pretty good treasure haul so far. I just wish he’d stop eating every fruit he sees.

We have to work harder on finding some truly valuable treasures. The sooner we hit our quota, the sooner I can get back to my wife and kids on Hocotate.
