Note: I do not speak Japanese. The translations below were mostly done with a combination of machine translation and checking each word and sentence with the help of the Jisho dictionary, and I suppose some pattern recognition.

#01 謎の惑星 PNF-404 (Mysterious Planet, PNF-404)

“ある遭難事故によって、数世紀ぶりに未知の惑星が発見された。豊富な水源に恵まれたこの青い惑星は、多様な生態系や文明の痕跡が見られるという……。まずは、この謎に包まれた惑星についてくわしくレポートしていこう。

TOPIC 1 未知なる惑星の発見

この惑星は、ホコタテ星では名のあるベテラン宇宙飛行士キャプテン・オリマー氏が休暇の途中、突然飛来した流星に直撃。吸い寄せられるように墜落したことから発見された。

また、その事故からほどなくして、コッパイ星による食料資源調査のために放たれた無人探査機が同惑星を発見。「PNF-404」と名付けられた。

偶然なのか、それとも……。

奇妙なことに、遭難したオリマー氏に続き、オリマーを救助するために向かったチームや、食料を求めてやってきた探索チーム（キャプテン・チャーリー氏ら3名）も、惑星に着陸態勢に入る寸前で事故が起こり、遭難してしまったという……。この事故と惑星の因果関係については不明な点も多く、いつかレポートにまとめようと思う。

TOPIC 2 惑星の環境について

地表の70%が水に覆われていて、そのほとんどが塩水である。公転面に対して地軸が傾いている影響で、大気を循環させる風が発生し温暖な気候を保ち、中緯度地域では季節も確認できる。

大きな衛星をひとつ持ち、それによって潮汐が発生することで多様な生態系が形成されたと考えられる。

TOPIC 3 文明の痕跡

この惑星には過去に存在した文明の遺産と思われる建築物や、人工的な物体が多く確認されている。そのいくつかを紹介しよう。

古代のアーケード

金属製の柱に木製の屋根がふかれた、巨大な構造物。古代では、この屋根の下で市場などが開かれて活気にあふれていたのではないだろうか？

白亜のやぐら

その圧倒的な白い偉容は、人々の信仰の象徴としての役割を果たしていたと考えられ、当時の祭事で使われたであろう謎の器具がいくつものこされている。

巨大な建造物の内部

建造物の中に城跡があるなど、高度な文明の痕跡が認められる。ここは、かつて繁栄を極めたこの惑星の王族の最期の隠れ家だったのかもしれない。

そして、未知なる生き物も……？

さまざまな自然環境に文明の痕跡。我々が想像する以上に、この惑星は多くの謎に満ちあふれていることがわかった。次のレポートでは、実際にオリマー氏が初めて出会った不思議な生き物について紹介するとしよう。”

Strangely enough, following Olimar's shipwreck, the team that was headed to rescue him and the search team (Captain Charlie's group of three) that came in search of food also had an accident and were shipwrecked just before they were ready to land on the planet... The causal relationship between these accidents and the planet is still unclear, but I will try to summarize it in a report someday.

TOPIC 2 — About the Planet's Environment

70% of the surface is covered by water, most of which is salt water. The tilt of the planet's axis relative to its orbital plane generates winds that circulate the atmosphere, maintaining a temperate climate, and seasons can be observed in the mid-latitude regions.

Traces of advanced civilization can be recognized, such as the ruins of a castle inside the structure. This may have been the final resting place of the once prosperous royal family of this planet.

#02 奇妙な生き物ピクミン (Mysterious Creatures, Pikmin)

“まずはこの１枚の写真を見てほしい。前回のレポートで惑星「PNF-404」について解説したが、今回はその惑星に遭難したキャプテン・オリマー氏が出会った、奇妙な生き物についてレポートしていこう。

TOPIC 1 ピクミンとは？

惑星内の他の原生生物と比べ、知能が高く非常に友好的である。言葉こそ通じないものの、投げたり、笛を吹いたりすると、指示を出すこともできるらしい。また、社会性があり集団で行動することが多いのは、1匹1匹ではこの厳しい惑星で生き延びるのが難しいからだろう。

我々より少し小柄なそのからだは、人間のようにもひょうたんのようにも見えるが、最も異なるのは、頭の先に植物のようなものが生えているということだ。

半動物半植物の生き物

動物 二足歩行で行動することができ、落ちているものを運ぶ習性がある。

植物 タネが地面から芽吹いてピクミンが生まれ、頭の葉っぱが成長するとつぼみや花になる。

植物なのに水が苦手？

多くのピクミンは、水への適応ができないようだ。専門家によると、「植物の根から進化したピクミンは、陸生の根菜と同様に水中では皮膚呼吸ができずおぼれてしまう。」とのことらしい。

COLUMN ニンジンそっくり？

ホコタテ星の特産品でもある「ピクピクニンジン」によく似ていることが、「ピクミン」の名前の由来となっている。高級食材の「ゴールデンピクピクニンジン」は、誰もが一度は食べてみたいあこがれの野菜である。

TOPIC 2 リーダーとの共生関係

共生関係とは？

共生とは、異なる生物が相互に関係を持ちながら同じ場所で活動することである。双方の生物が得をするだけでなく、片方だけが一方的に得をすることもあるらしいが、ピクミンの場合はどうなのだろうか？

リーダーとピクミン、それぞれのメリット

ピクミンの芽を引っこぬくと、リーダーと認識してついてくるようになる。この瞬間から、リーダーとピクミンとの間にある種の共生関係が生まれるのだ。

リーダーのメリット たくさんのピクミンがいれば、重いものを運んだり、行く手をはばむ原生生物を倒すこともできるだろう。

ピクミンのメリット 有能なリーダーを得たピクミンは、爆発的にその数を増やして、この星で最強の生物となることができるのだ。

TOPIC 3 野生のピクミン

乗組員は見た！野生のピクミン

うまく共生関係を築けずに数を減らしたり、群れからはぐれてしまったピクミンの一部は、野生化し、活動の場を地下に移すこともあるようだ。

野生のピクミンすら絶滅してしまったのだろうか、「ポンガシグサ」という花にピクミンを投げ入れることでしか生まれない、とても貴重な種類もいる。

変な種類の報告も…… 他にもこのような目撃情報もある。

ピクミンは、リーダーとの共生によって数を増やすだけに留まらず、どうやら彼らが生まれる仕組みさえも共生によって得ているらしい。「オニヨン」という彼らの巣とも母体とも言える物体に栄養を与えると、タネを吹き出して増えるのだが、実はオニヨンはピクミンとは近い種ではあるものの、まったく別の生き物なのだという……。次回は、この「オニヨン」についてレポートしていこう。”

Benefits for Pikmin — Pikmin with a competent leader can explosively increase their numbers and become the most powerful creatures on the planet.

TOPIC 3 — Wild Pikmin

It seems that some Pikmin, which have not been able to establish a good symbiotic relationship and whose numbers have dwindled, or which have strayed from the group, have gone into the wild and shifted their activities underground.

Some very precious types of Pikmin may even be extinct in the wild and can only be created by throwing Pikmin into flowers called "Candypop Buds".
