White Spectralids (白シジミ?, lit.: "White Clam") are small butterfly creatures in Pikmin 3 and Hey! Pikmin, acting as new versions of the Unmarked Spectralids from Pikmin 2. They have white wings, very fuzzy bodies, red eyes and two small feet they use to stand on things. They are very aesthetic, and will fly around any level and land on almost any surface, usually flowers, Pellet Posies, or the eyes or back of a sleeping Bulborb. Compared to other Pikmin 3 flitterbies, this one has white wings, with a purple and black circular pattern on the tips, for the top wings, and without the purple on the bottom ones.

Unlike other Spectralids, this type of flitterbie drops nothing. To compensate, in Pikmin 3 it is found near the landing site and the Blue Onion, meaning their retrieval doesn't normally take much time. This is a good (albeit slow) way for players to farm seeds without needing to stray away into more dangerous zones.

In Hey! Pikmin, they only appear in a cutscene in The Burning Sky and don't have a log entry, similar to Yellow Spectralids. Because of this, it is unknown if these are the same creatures as in Pikmin 3. They probably are though, due to their appearance and behavior being strikingly similar. In fact, the only major difference is that the purple rings near the tops of their wings are larger and brighter.

Notes

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide

The White Spectralids[sic] is a harmless flying creature. Unless Pikmin cultivation is your priority, it's usually best to ignore these enemies. If you choose to attack a White Spectralids[sic], use Winged Pikmin to defeat the creature with ease. If that's not an option, wait for the White Spectralids[sic] to land, then toss a single Pikmin onto its back.

Alph's Notes

There's a saying that a tiny design adjustment can cause huge cascades of change elsewhere in a project. It makes me wonder what effect our presence here has had on the planet.

Brittany's Notes

You'd think with wings like that, it would float away on the slightest breeze. Maybe it's working really hard to stay where it is. If that's the case, it could've fooled me.

Charlie's Notes

It's a flighty one, in both senses of the word. But even if it would stay still, I don't have the heart to unleash my steely fists on the poor thing.

Louie's Notes

Remove the wings and drop straight into the deep fryer. Cook until golden or until the enticing aroma starts to sting your eyes. Serve immediately.

Olimar's Notes

It's remarkably similar to its unmarked brethren, but the telltale wing patterns and lone pair of hind legs give it away. It sticks to its own habitat for the most part; though it may fly away to reach a flower or escape a bulblax, it will soon return to its home. The white variety gathers no nectar but sometimes may be found carrying a pellet.

Behavior

White Spectralids may be seen on the ground, nearby flowers, or the back of a sleeping Bulborb, but in all cases, when a leader or Pikmin approaches them, they will fly away. They will flutter around aimlessly in the air, and while doing so they are difficult to reach. After the leader moves a considerable distance away from the Spectralid, it will return within 10 seconds. In Hey Pikmin, one is found flying close to the ground, and soon after lands on a nearby stone. After Pikmin lunge towards it, it flies off and disappears.

Strategy

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Any type of Pikmin can be thrown directly at a White Spectralid to defeat it instantly. You must, however, remain a considerable distance away from the creature, as it will fly away if any leader gets too close; this is not a problem for Winged Pikmin, as they will give chase, making them the best option for defeating these creatures. Unless you are trying to cultivate as many Pikmin as possible, it's best not to bother with these creatures; they drop no nectar when killed and they provide only one Pikmin when brought to the Onion

Trivia

  • The White Spectralid is the only Spectralid in Pikmin 3 that doesn't appear in Mission Mode.
  • In the game files for the Garden of Hope, a White Spectralid is meant to spawn near the Bulborb the player encounters on the way to free Brittany, but in-game, no such Spectralid exists.
    • There is a White Spectralid near the gate blocking the way to the Astringent Clump in the Garden of Hope, but this Spectralid actually starts out of bounds slightly under the floor, beyond the gate, before the transition zone, and on the left ledge. It's not until the day begins that it moves to its correct position.
