Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for Wii U and 3DS?), also collectively and unoffically referred to as Super Smash Bros. 4 are the 4th games in the Super Smash Bros. series, as both games are essentially the same with some minor differences. Several Pikmin related elements return from Brawl, such as Olimar being a playable character, and the Distant Planet stage being on the 3DS version of the game. At the same time, many new elements from the Pikmin series also make a debut.

Olimar & Pikmin

Olimar returns as a veteran fighter, retaining much of the moveset he had in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Few details have been announced regarding the changes, but the following are known:

Olimar's moves

From what the screenshots and gameplay show us, Olimar keeps many of his standard moves from the previous game. Thanks to the Super Smash Bros. Direct on Arpil 8th, 2014, we have gotten a little more information.

Standard Special move

Pikmin Pluck: Olimar plucks Pikmin. However, as stated, he can only carry three Pikmin, and to make the Pikmin use more strategy based, the Pikmin come in a set order (Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Purple, repeat).

Side Special move

Pikmin Throw: Unchanged from Brawl. He throws Pikmin, and the Pikmin, unless Purple, will latch on and attack. Purples knock the victim back.

Up Special move

Winged Pikmin: Two Winged Pikmin appear and lift Olimar and his Pikmin up. Opposite to his recovery move in Brawl, Pikmin Chain, the more Pikmin he currently has, the worse his recovery is.

Down Special move

Call to Order: Just like in Brawl, all wayward Pikmin are called back. This time, no Super Armor is given to Olimar during the move.

Final Smash

Olimar maintains the same Final Smash, End of Day, from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, the ship now plummets downward to the stage instead of falling upright.

Sakurai's Miiverse post where Alph is revealed as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Alph

Alph was first leaked by a leaker a week prior to the 3DS version's release in Japan. At the time, it was not known if Alph was a new character or an alternate costume.

On September 11, 2014, Sakurai confirmed that Alph was an alternate costume for Olimar. He functions exactly the same as Olimar, even when it comes to the stage introduction and Final Smash. In other words, Alph still enters out of the Hocotate Ship when entering the stage, and still uses the Hocotate Ship for his Final Smash. He, like Olimar, is unable to use Rock Pikmin. Alph also seems to be a bit taller than he was in Pikmin 3 to match Olimar's body size.

Posts by Sakurai

"Pic of the day. The hero from Pikmin 3, Alph joins the battle!! He has pretty much the same set skills as Olimar since he's basically just his variation. He can't use Rock Pikmin either." [1]

"They are different characters, so they each get their own title treatment on the character-selection screen. See? It says Alph." [2]

Palette

All 8 palettes for Captain Olimar in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Olimar retains his red spacesuit from Brawl. His green color has gone through changes, as well has his white one. Alph has green and pink suits based off of Charlie and Brittany, respectively. He also has a red suit that resembles Olimar himself.

Custom

Like the other characters in the game, Olimar comes with 2 alternate moves for each of his special attacks, as well as exclusive equipment.

Standard Specials

  • Hardy Pikmin Pluck: It takes longer to Pluck Pikmin, but they are more resistant, taking more damage to kill.
  • Explosive Pikmin Pluck: Again, it takes longer to pluck Pikmin, but plucking them causes a small explosion that can damage opponents. However, Pikmin are easily to kill, and may even die without being attacked, forcing Olimar to puck more Pikmin. The amount of damage given by the explosion also depends on the Pikmin type. Red, Yellow, and Blues inflict 7% damage, Whites emit poison fumes that deal 4%, and Purples deal 9% as well as deal a stronger knockback.

Side Specials

  • Sticky Pikmin Throw: Pikmin are harder to shake off, but they deal less damage
  • Tackle Pikmin Throw: All Pikmin behave like Purple Pikmin

Up Specials

  • Winged Pikmin Jump: The recovery is faster, but upon parting ways with the Winged Pikmin, Olimar immediately falls into the helpless state. This attack also requires to be recharged. The attack gets weaker with each consecutive use. It also has a push affect on opponents. At full charge, Olimar has a lot better vertical recovery than the regular move.
  • Mighty Winged Pikmin: The recovery has a set amount of travel distance.

Down Specials

  • Order Tackle: Upon being called back, the Pikmin travel at a high arc and damage any opponent they hit. If they were latched onto someone, there's also a chance that opponent will be brought back with them. However, the move has ending lag, leaving Olimar vulnerable. Red, Yellow, and Blues do 2% damage, Whites do 1%, and Purples do 7%.
  • Dizzy Whistle: All opponents within the vicinity of the attack gets slipped around, similar to Mario's cape. They also take 1% damage from it. The move has starting lag, leaving Olimar vulnerable at the move's early frames.

Equipment

  • Brave Pikmin: Attack +50, Defense -29
  • Desperate Defender Pikmin: Improved defense in a crisis. Attack +20, Defense -23

Garden of Hope

File:SSB4GardenStage.jpg
The full view of the Garden of Hope stage. Note the many differences.

The Garden of Hope is a playable stage for the Wii U installment of the series. The main arena takes place in the second half of the area accessible once Louie runs away with the juice. There are a few changes, however:

  • The pieces of land are now connected by a Bridge.
  • The Drake is seen in the area with a Burgeoning Spiderwort and a Tin Box in the real game.
  • The cup, which is constucted out of Fragments, is now on land.
  • There are Elevator Platforms on each  of the ends of the stage.
  • There is a Climbing Stick on the right half of the stage that you can stand on.
  • There is a Tin Can in place of the Bamboo Gate.
  • Most significantly, the other part of the area is no longer there. Instead, there is a massive waterfall.

At this time, there appears to be no stage hazards that inflict damage upon a player

Distant Planet

Main article: Distant Planet.

The Distant Planet stage is present as a Brawl Stage in the 3DS Version. As a whole, not much has changed from Brawl, aside from some minor changes in the background. Just like in Brawl, the stage seems based off of The Forest of Hope and the Awakening Wood.

The Omega form of this stage takes away all the vegetation and leaves a simple dirt platform to fight on. The Final Destination form also provides a better view of the background.

Hocotate Bomb

File:Hocotate Ship SSB4.jpeg
The Hocotate Ship Bomb item, with Olimar and Sonic looking at it.

The Hocotate Bomb is a new item in both versions of the game. On Miiverse and the Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U official website, Sakurai posted an image of Sonic and Olimar next to a small model of the Hocotate Ship, in which he stated that it is a new bomb item that, when triggered, flies up in the air, then crashes back down much like the Warp Star item. However, it should be noted that the bomb will crash down abruptly, giving no indication of when it will drop. The explosion it causes is quite big, and could result in a KO if it hits an opponent. The Hocotate Ship is still used for Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day. Oddly enough, the trophy for the Hocotate Ship actually describes this item.

Post by Sakurai

"Pic of the day. Is this a spaceship from Hocotate? No-this is a bomb SHAPED like a spaceship. After liftoff, it will drop down when you least expect it." [3]

Smash Run

Bulborbs will appear as enemies on the Super Smash Bros. 3DS exclusive Smash Run.

2 enemies from the Pikmin series appear in the 3DS exclusive mode, Smash Run.

Red Bulborb

The Red Bulborb appears in Smash Run. It seems to be a basic enemy that attacks by charging and biting. It seems to be based off of its Pikmin 2 design, having purple eyes instead of blue. The Bulborb's attacks pack a massive punch and have a large amount of health, making them a formidable foe; arguably one of the hardest

Iridescent Glint Beetle

File:GlintBeetleSmash.png
The Glint Beetle in Smash Run.

The Iridescent Glint Beetle is one of the rarest in Smash Run, only appearing in small caves that are normally out of the way. It will only reveal itself after walking over its hiding place. Once it pops out, hitting it will cause it to release golden coins. The more times you hit it, the more cash you get.

Post by Sakurai

"There are other bonus characters that appear in this game, too. Here's an Iridescent Glint Beetle from the Pikmin series. Keep hitting it!! Keep hitting it for gold!!" [4]

Trophies

Trophies are a key part of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and there are quite a few Pikmin trophies

3DS version

A good amount of trophies from the Pikmin franchise are present in the 3DS version, but not nearly as many as the number of trophies in Brawl. So far, the ones seen are listed below.

Name Picture Description
Olimar The trophy for Captain Olimar in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, followed by a Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin. "A veteran spaceship pilot for Hocotate Freight, Captain Olimar parters with Pikmin in Smash Bros. to help him battle. Olimar is much stronger when he's got Pikmin with him, so keep them plucked and good to go. Pikmin abilities are based on their color —learn what each is best at!"
Olimar
(All-Star)
A trophy for Captain Olimar in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, throwing a Red Pikmin while guarded by a Yellow Pikmin and a Blue Pikmin. "Pikmin aren't just good for attacking, you know. For example, when you throw them, they can pick up items on their way back. Only items that aren't very heavy, though! Also, if there's someone charging or shooting at you, a well-timed Pikmin throw can stop them in their tracks!"
Alph The trophy for Alph in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, being followed by a Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin. "Alph is a young explorer who crashed on the planet PNF-404. As the engineer of the S.S. Drake, he feels responsible for finding the missing crew and the ship after the crash. Waking up in a pond, Alph quickly encounters a tiny creature— it's a Pikmin!"
Louie The trophy for Louie in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "Louie worked for Hocotate Freight in Pikmin 2. His appetite has gone into overdrive in Pikmin 3. Rescued from a swarm of Scornets by Alph and crew, Louie thanked them the next day by stealing all of the food they'd collected. Maybe he should work on his manners more than getting a meal..."
Hocotate Bomb The trophy of the Hocotate ship from the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "With the outward appearance of a Hocotate Freight ship, this is actually a bomb in disguise! Arm it by throwing it on the ground, and give it a nudge if you're impatient. It'll fly up into the sky, returning a short time later and exploding. Force your foes into the landing zone!"
Red Pikmin The trophy for a Red Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, sliding down a Sunseed Berry. "This Pikmin has a red body and a long, pointy nose. It was the first type of Pikmin Olimar ever met. In Smash Bros., they have the second highest attack power among the Pikmin. Like their fiery color suggests, they can attack with flames and withstand them."
Yellow Pikmin The trophy for Yellow Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing 3 Pikmin around a Face Wrinkler. "This yellow Pikmin is sporting some pointy things on its head. Maybe those are ears? Hmm... Anyway, yellow Pikmin are immune to electricity and are the lightest Pikmin in the Pikmin series. In Smash Bros., a thrown yellow Pikmin will fly through the air in a nice curve, zapping anyone it comes in contact with."
Blue Pikmin The trophy for a Blue Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, walking through water and beside a pink petal. "This blue Pikmin walks around with its mouth ajar. At home in the water, they're very helpful when objects are submerged and need retrieving. In Smash Bros., blue Pikmin have defense second only to purple Pikmin. They are also able to do more damage when thrown, so don't be shy about hurling them at foes."
White Pikmin The trophy for White Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing a Pikmin standing on a rock. "These tiny, white Pikmin have bright-red eyes. They are the fastest of the Pikmin, perfect for finding and retrieving hidden treasure. In Smash Bros., you can use them to poison your enemies. Since they can fly the farthest of any Pikmin when thrown, use them to poison enemies from afar."
Purple Pikmin The trophy for a Purple Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, carrying a single Dusk Pustule. "These purple Pikmin are the strongest, but they're also slower and heavier. In Pikmin, they can be thrown at animals to stun them! In Smash Bros., they're great for attacking and launching, but they've got a pretty short reach. Get close to your foe to make these little ones truly effective!"
Rock Pikmin The trophy for a Rock Pikmin in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, sitting beside a creeping burhead. "These Pikmin are made of solid rock, so they can stand up to a lot of attacks and won't get hurt when they get stepped on. They specialize in body blows, dealing a lot of damage when thrown, and they can also break right through glass and crystal. They can't latch on to other creatures, though. But that's OK—nobody's perfect!"
Winged Pikmin The trophy for Winged Pikmin in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, showing 2 Pikmin around a Juicy Gaggle. "These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down."
Bulborb The trophy for a Bulborb in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, fighting Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, Blue Pikmin, Purple Pikmin, and White Pikmin. "These creatures from the Pikmin series have snail-like protruding eyes, huge mouths, and really bad tempers. They're known for snapping at fighters and trying to trample them underfoot. If you see one in a group of enemies, you should try to take it out fast—it'll shoot off and bounce around, hitting other enemies as it goes!"
Iridescent Glint Beetle The trophy for an Iridescent Glint Beetle in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "Hope you're not scared of bugs... In Pikmin, these guys drop nectar, but in Smash Run they drop coins instead. They hide, waiting for fighters to get too close...then strike! They're tough to catch, but your reward for success is coins, coins, coins. They'll slink away to sulk after being properly robbed."
Pellets The trophy for red, yellow, and blue pellets in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. "A crystallized nectar that contains the essence of the Pikmin's home world, these pellets are most often harvested from the plant life of the planet. Each pellet displays a number on its surface, and this number may increase over time. The Onion generates more Pikmin with bigger numbers."

Wii U version

File:ZlCfzR7N9uYpuZt gw.jpg
Brittany's Trophy as seen in SSB4.

So far, Brittany is the only revealed trophy from the Pikmin series for the Wii U version. However, assuming the that this installment follows the trophy pattern from the previous installments, Olimar, his Pikmin, and the Hocotate Bomb will all get trophies of their own in this version.

Post by Sakurai:

"Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed."
