Very helpful article. Hopefully, we get some users to submit some cool featured Pikmin articles if possible.

Okay, since we're now not using a rotation, should this be changed? Should we set up a system whereby articles can be nominated to be featured? We would just set up a page for people to edit with their nominations, and change the article to a new popular one when it's getting old (maybe at Pikmin: Featured articles/nominations). Also, I'd like to have a record of what's been featured here, something like:

Perplexing Pool
30th March 2008 - 18th April 2008
[[8-day run]]
18th April 2008 -

Hm? Also, is there any possible appropriate image for the current feature? It needs one.GP 08:48, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm on it. And a "yes" to all the other stuff.--Prezintenden
Okay, seeing as featured articles now just use the introductory paragraph or so from the main article, there's no point in creating a page for them; just have it at template:feature and change that text. I'm going to set that up now; what I want to know is the opinion on what should be done with the other featured articles and the rotation page.GP 18:18, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Right, I've made a few changes. There's the featured article header template at template:featured, the current featured article is always at template:feature, and this page has changed; and I created Pikmin:Featured articles/nominations.GP 19:40, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I think it's time to choose a new feature from the four on the nominations page. Might be easier if people actually opposed those they won't support rather than being nice.GP 18:15, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Should I change the featured article to Smokey Progg soon? ~~ Edit: Oops. Vol (Talk)

I could swear it was featured previously. Guess not. Well, go for it. Also, you only... used two tildes... no matter. {EspyoT} 08:18, 12 April 2011 (EDT)

Should Pikmin 3 be in this list?Edit

I noticed that Pikmin 3 was in the featured article category and had the {{Feature}} template, but wasn't in the list of featured articles on this page. I looked through a bunch of page histories, and worked out that the list here follows the featured article progression on Pikipedia, while the Pikmin 3 article was featured on the Wikia wiki. The Wikia wiki had a different progression of featured articles during the split period, as shown on their revision history for Template:Feature. Should the list here reflect this, or should it only contain the Pikipedia list? And if so, should Pikmin 3 be removed from the featured article category? — Botanist(talk) 05:49, July 13, 2021 (EDT)

Hmm... I think only Pikipedia's should remain, otherwise things will get too confusing and conflicting. Cases from the Wikia days can be wiped out. — {EspyoT} 13:55, July 13, 2021 (EDT)

The nature of featured articlesEdit

The way Pikipedia does featured articles is really quite different from the standard way wikis feature articles. Usually, being featured is a state an article can have, and articles can be added to and removed from a list of featured articles. The article shown on the main page is selected from among the featured articles (Wikipedia does this daily since it has a lot of articles, while the Super Mario Wiki frequently alternates between its featured articles).

In contrast, Pikipedia chooses a new article to feature specifically for the purpose of showing on the main page. The featured status only applies for those 2 months, while the "previously featured" status lasts forever, even if the article is no longer good enough to be featured.

Now, Pikipedia's system has quite a bit of history behind it and is simple to understand, but I wonder if it would be worth slightly changing it to be like other wiki systems. This could be done by moving the "Ready nominations" from the nominations page into its own page of feature-worthy articles, and this page would also store previously featured articles that are still high-quality. (If articles dropped in quality, they could be removed from that list.) That way, we could have a catalog of articles featured on the 2 month cycle (the featured article history), and a list of the highest-quality articles on the wiki (the featured article list). Would it be worth making a change like this? — Soprano(talk) 17:06, December 21, 2021 (EST)

Both methods have pros and cons. With a random showcase, the reader could always miss out on some articles because of the randomness. With Pikipedia's approach, they need to wait months before seeing something new. With the other method, the same list could be in circulation for years until someone adds something new, whereas with Pikipedia, because the updates are so slow, there's usually enough time to get something fresh every two months. Pikipedia's way is much less stressful on workload since it only happens every once in a while, but it's also a big, tiring deal having to find the best of the best. Flagging some minor or more incomplete articles as features helps a lot with article diversity and effort, but isn't the idea of a featured article to showcase the shining stars of the wiki?
At the end of the day, I think our approach is fine, at least for now while we still have a healthy list of articles to use. We used to use a random selection of featured articles (or was that only for the featured images? Can't remember) but because nothing happened with the franchise for years, no new articles ever needed to be added. At least the randomness kept the front page fresh throughout that time. Maybe we'll have to go back to that one day. — {EspyoT} 11:46, December 24, 2021 (EST)
