The Arctic Cannon Beetle (オオユキカブト?, lit.: "Great Snow Beetle") is a boss in Pikmin 4, and the adult stage of the Arctic Cannon Larva. The Arctic Cannon Beetle appears similar to the Armored Cannon Beetle and Horned Cannon Beetle, with a light blue shell, blue skin, red eyes, and no blowhole. It also spits out snowballs instead of boulders. Due to its lack of a blowhole, it breathes through its mouth instead, allowing it to inhale groups of Pikmin but also forcing it to expose its abdomen as it inhales.

Behavior

The Arctic Cannon Beetle patrols a small area, scanning its surroundings, until a leader or Pikmin approaches. Upon noticing them, it turns towards them and begins to inhale. After a couple seconds, its wings open up to reveal its vulnerable abdomen as it inhales more powerfully, being able to suck up the player and all of their Pikmin. If a bomb rock is thrown at it while it is inhaling, it eats the bomb rock and takes roughly 1/6th of its health in damage. After inhaling, regardless of whether it successfully inhaled any Pikmin, it spits out a large snowball. The snowball can pick up Pikmin and, if it hits a wall, cause icicles to fall that can crush Pikmin. If any Pikmin were inhaled, then half of them would be eaten and the other half of them would be spat out within the snowball. It then shakes off any attacking Pikmin and closes its wings before inhaling again. In Cavern for a King it's behavior is very different while idle. It spits snowballs which go from one side to the other side of the sublevel turning in each curve picking up every captain, pikmin or creature in it's way.

Locations

The Arctic Cannon Beetle appears in Subzero Sauna and Cavern for a King.

Strategy

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Riding Oatchi is recommended, since Pikmin cling to his back instead of trailing behind you, which is important for avoiding it's inhale and the icicles that fall from above. Stand in front of the Arctic Cannon Beetle to get it to start inhaling, then quickly circle around behind it. When its wings open up to reveal its abdomen, start throwing Pikmin at it or rush it with Oatchi. Repeat this process two to three times and the fight should be over.

It should be noted that dealing a significant enough amount of damage, but only immediately after exposing the weak point, the "second phase" increased-force suction will be cut short.

Although it may not look like it, its suction attack actually counts as eating. This can be abused with the use of Pikpik Carrots thrown right in front of its mouth while it charges. The stun provided allows the boss's "phases" created from shaking off Pikmin to be skipped. Since the boss cannot be frozen, this is the cheapest way to induce this kind of stun. Of course, high damaging Pikmin types like Red Pikmin, Purple Pikmin or Rock Pikmin are reccomended to beat this boss faster, or the player can opt to use Ultra-Spicy Spray.

In its encounter in Cavern for a King, the player can choose to bring some Glow Seeds with them since Glow Pikmin will be immune to possibly being pushed off of the platform. Winged Pikmin can prevent themselves from falling into the Abyss too using their flight, but this is not always reliable. Coincidentally, these types also float over the sticky mold present in the Beetle's arena.

Notes

Dalmo's Notes

A beautiful armored bug that sparkles like a diamond. The sight of it busily tromping along...the way it sucks air and spews out snowballs... Everything about it is remarkable! While standing transfixed by its stunning appearance, you'll end up covered in snow for sure!

Olimar's Notes

Upon reaching maturity, the blowhole on its head closes, leaving in its place the pointed crest of the Arctic Cannon Beetle's shell.

In order to get enough food in nutrient-deficient environments, adult specimens start breathing through their mouths. Some experts have posited that this adaptation caused the species to lose territorial competitions with the Armored Cannon Larva, driving it into colder environments.

Though this Beetle has increased suction strength, it must ventilate via a spiracle on its abdomen and open its shell to avoid rapid body inflation.

Louie's Notes

Boil the meaty legs until fully cooked, then drizzle with a generous amount of lemon juice. Once the juice has seeped its way into the muscle fibers, suck the meat out of the shell with one big slurp.
