The Shallow End (すいちゅうへの いざない?, lit.: "Invitation to go underwater") is the last main area in the Verdant Waterfront. It takes place in a lake, much like most of the Verdant Waterfront's areas, but has some crystals with sharp edges, resembling icicles. Some of these will fall after Captain Olimar gets too close, so the player has to either outrun them or bait them into falling, to avoid having them fall on Olimar or the Pikmin.

Description

At the start, the player can call some Blue Pikmin. After this encounter, Olimar comes across a huge crystal, looking like an icicle. The protagonist has to be careful with it, otherwise it will hurt Olimar or kill some Pikmin when it falls. The area is filled with those obstacles, along with lakes and stretches of water. After a long trip through a lake infested with Puckering Blinnows and icicle-like crystals, the player can break a dirt block that is hiding a doorway leading to the first treasure, the Greed-o-Sphere. The player has to be careful with the Large Splurchin near the treasure. A small time after this, Olimar can enter a doorway placed on a bridge, however it leads nowhere. The player has to keep going in the level, dive in the lake, and take a path to the left. Then, Olimar has to avoid an icicle and a Large Splurchin in order to get to a doorway. The last treasure, the Conformity Enhancers, is waiting for him on the other side. In order to retrieve the second treasure, the player has to go back to the edge of the lake (after the doorway on the bridge), and fly with their jetpack to the right. Then, the protagonist will enter a small hole, leading to the Twisty Pick. After this, the player will go through a corridor decorated with deadly icicles, and face a wall of Puckering Blinnows at the end of it. Fortunately, the exit is right behind it.

Cutscenes

Cutscene Screenshot Trigger Description
Stone carrying   The player moves a bit beyond the first lake. Four Blue Pikmin carrying a stone come from off-camera. They carry it to the center of the scene, drop it, and scurry to hide behind it. Two of the Pikmin peek out eventually, but end up going back down.
Earthquake   The player leaves the pool with Large Splurchins, climbs to the ledge on the left that needs the jetpack, and goes a bit further to the left. The camera focuses on a stone. The ground begins to shake, and three Blue Pikmin pop out of the stone and start panicking. A fourth Blue Pikmin gets up slowly, but is too sleepy to care about the shaking. The rumbling eventually stops, and the scared Pikmin shake their heads and return to hiding behind the rock. The sleepy Pikmin does the same, but much slower, and still without much of a reaction.
