Attacks Impale Pikmin

Scornets (ハチスズメ?, lit.: "Bee Sparrow") are tiny hornet-like cone-shaped creatures in Pikmin 3 that are lead by the Scornet Maestro.

These enemies are capable of making coordinated formations, and can capture and eventually kill Pikmin by picking them up and then flying around the Scornet Maestro. These Pikmin can be freed by having Pikmin thrown at the Scornet. If a captured Pikmin is not freed, over time it will be carried away and lost. The first swarm of about 30 individuals appears just after a lily pad river ride. When found alone, these creatures as much less uniform and easier to defeat. The only other swarm found is during the Scornet Maestro boss fight, and use three different attacks: the cone, rectangle, and circle formation strikes. In Mission Mode, a group of 30 Scornets are present in Twilight River Remix.

Alph's comments

Structural flaw: weak hide

These buzzing swarms are rare but dangerous. Normal Pikmin aren't built to handle these insects. They'll just get carried off. Use Winged Pikmin instead.

Brittany's comments

If only I could whistle just the right tune or pitch, I bet I could get them to carry me around this planet. I'd only need one, but I'm sure it would take a lot more to get Alph or the captain airborne.

Charlie's comments

  US version
These swarms of tiny terrors are well organized. Then again, so are we! I'll put my leadership skills to the test against their numbers any day! Pikmin, fall out!

Roast over a low fire until golden brown. Add a pinch of salt and set out as an appetizer or perhaps as a simple, aromatic centerpiece.

These highly social insects always travel in groups. Each of them has a unique role in the colony. This type is a small, though still adult, worker female. Rather than lay eggs, they spend their lives carrying out the queen's will. In response to their queen's sonic commands, they move in unison as if they were a single entity. To see them dance through the air is a sight to behold, but don't look too long. Their stingers are still deadly.

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide

Scornets are flying creatures that congregate in large swarms. When Scornets attack, they move into a tiny formation and fly toward their enemies. Any Pikmin unfortunate enough to be skewered by a Scornet will be carried around the area until they succumb to their injuries. Use a large squad of Winged Pikmin to quickly clear out a Scornet Swarm. Gather your Pikmin each time the Scornets move into formation, then resume your attacks when the enemies separate. If any of your Pikmin are skewered by a Scornet, use your Winged Pikmin to defeat the enemy before the skewered Pikmin expires.

Behavior

Scornets look similar to the Scornet Maestro, which controls them using its harp-like beak. Under the Maestro's control, the Scornets will come together to form unique shapes, each with their own attack. When found alone, however, these creatures are uncoordinated and have only one attack. Whether found alone or with the boss, the Scornets' attacks will result in captured Pikmin being carried around in a circle for a set amount of time before being flown away and killed. The Pikmin can, however, be freed if the Scornet holding them is defeated, which can be done easily – in one hit in fact, as Scornet's are extremely fragile, not even having health meters.

Strategy

The following article or section contains guides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Using ground based Pikmin is practically useless, as the Scornets will simply snatch them out of the air in mid-toss. The best way to defeat a swarm is to use a large amount of Winged Pikmin in order to outnumber them. A group of Scornets is found shortly before you get to the Scornet Maestro, hovering around aimlessly on the far side of the river. Their attacks are uncoordinated and their dead bodies are not retrievable. When you fight an organized army of them in the boss battle, all 100 of their bodies are retrievable. After taking them to the Onion, it is not recommended to come back for more, because they are worth only one seed, and it is a long run to and from the landing site.

Naming

  • Common name: Scornet. It is a play on the word "hornet", although the origin of the other part of the word is debatable. It is possible that it stands for "scorn" (which means "to treat with dislike") or "score", particularly in the sense of a musical score, because of the Scornet Maestro.
  • Japanese nickname: ハチスズメ?, lit.: "Bee Sparrow".
  • Japanese name: ワタリハチスズメ?, lit.: "Migratory Bee Sparrow".
  • Scientific name: Its scientific name is Spourgitis advenus, which it also shares with the Scornet Maestro, confirming they are the same species. Advenus is a term meaning "foreign" in Latin, referring to the Scornet's migratory nature.
  • Internal names: Internally, it is known as mure, or むれ? (lit.: "swarm"), referring to how they work in swarms.
  • Prerelease: None.
