e-Reader

Outstanding job! We've always wanted to have more info on the e-Reader games, and now you came along and added it. I'd like to point you down to the chatroom – we have a few members there, but for the most part, the "pros" are always around. At least three of us are good with programming and fiddling with in-game files, so if you feel like chatting about reverse-engineering and in-game discoveries, hop in and chat (though keep in mind that we could be away because of our busy schedules...). Keep up the great work, too! Oh, and if you can add some more juicy content to the e-Reader page, I think it'd make a great candidate for a featured article; we're getting close to the day we have to swap out for a new featured article. — {EspyoT} 10:21, 17 February 2015 (EST)

No problem, it was quite a learning experience for me! Anyway, I've tried joining the chat but can't seem to connect. Either the server is down or it's a problem with my security settings to I'll look into it. I soon plan on asking about data mining Pikmin 3 and I've seen your work on TCRF as it seems not a whole lot has been found within the game yet so hopefully we'll be able to discover more soon! Pikmin 3 fruit values

Hi there. Where exactly did you get the fruit values from? Are they in the _indirect .szs files? Because I can't find them at all. — {EspyoT} 14:28, 5 May 2016 (EDT)

Yes, after the indirect file is decompressed you'll get some text documents, one is called params.txt. The price value in each is about 50 lines down under a section called mPrice (you might have to open it with a special encoding in Notepad++ or something). This is the only field I've confirmed so far but eventually we'll need a fruit technical info template. Also, the fruit data is located in the otakara folder. For a while the only dump of the game available was missing this folder so check that you have it. GreenPikmin (talk) 15:18, 5 May 2016 (EDT)
Thanks for the detailed reply! I actually browsed the indirect files before and found that mPrice field... but it doesn't match up to what appears in-game. Further, I tried checking the Delectable Bouquet (internal name "fig") and it says its mPrice is 0. Are you saying you get an 80 on that exact same file? I wonder why our files are different... The files I'm checking are the vanilla (no DLC or update) files inside the European copy of the game. What about you? — {EspyoT} 15:24, 5 May 2016 (EDT)
That's odd, I'm gonna run through everything again and get back to you. I think I'm using the fully updated US version but I'm not sure yet since I'm still in the process of extracting all the models and files to see if there's any DLC data or objects. GreenPikmin (talk) 15:32, 5 May 2016 (EDT)
I double checked all the values and everything matches up. I'm guessing it indeed is something to do with the version and poko values for all the fruits were added at some point despite not all being used. Aha, I figured it out! I have the files for all of the patches, and these values were introduced in the 1.2.0 update. I guess they figured "Hey, since we're making DLC, we might want to use other fruits too, so let's give all of them a value." I also made a fruit technical data template in the meantime. Cool, glad it's figured out. I'll add the technical data to the articles but I have a couple concerns. One is that the alpha component of every juice color is 255 so I'm wondering if it's still necessary to list. The other is that the grade parameter appears to correlate with the size of each fruit, the only exception being the Fire-Breathing Feast, which is given a 1 when it should really be a 4 or 5. So I did some research to see if this value indeed affected the carry path. Pikmin should be able to carry grade 1 fruits through a dug out tunnel, which is true for stuff like grapes. With the dragonfruit having this value the same should happen, right? Luckily this can be tested with the one in Beastly Caverns. The result was that non-blue Pikmin get stuck if the reinforced wall isn't bombed, and they will not try to bring it through the tunnel. This could be caused by something else, but I thought maybe they'd bring it through the tunnel anyway making the edges glitch through the wall or something. So I'm thinking we either shouldn't list this value until we truly know what it is, or we could still list it for all the fruits and maybe put a note on the Fire-Breathing Feast. To be honest, I didn't check for the juice alpha values, I just rolled with it. I'd say we keep it for completion's sake (not like it'll bloat the article or anything), but make it hardcoded into the table, instead of forcing the editor to add a 255 to the template. The table is meant to have the values from the game files in as raw a format as possible, so that's another reason to keep it, I'd say. As for the "grade" thing, you kind of reached the exact same conclusions me and Marty did on the IRC! Can you access the IRC? It'd be a lot easier to discuss these things there. We didn't think of the Beastly Cavern's Fire-Breathing Feast, though. It's interesting that the Pikmin don't try to take it through the tunnel, but that could be because the FBF on the Beastly Caverns has an override on the "grade" value. Specific instances of objects on specific areas and missions can override their class's attributes (e.g. the HP of the Bug-Eyed Crawmad on the Fortress of Festivity), so this might be what happened. Unfortunately, I don't have the DLC stages's files, so I can't check if that really is the case... I know what you mean about being unsure about keeping it, but maybe it'll help us understand what they mean if we actually keep them. Having them won't really bloat anything, especially because the table is hidden by default, and having these values around might pique some readers's interests, and they could try to get to the bottom of this too. I'm actually on the fence about adding a warning specifically for the Fire-Breathing Feast, though. — {EspyoT} 16:06, 7 May 2016 (EDT)

Alphabetical Fruit Order
