Erma Shepherd, usually simply called Shepherd, is the captain of the Rescue Corps in Pikmin 4. She is Oatchi's trainer, and leads the group's mission. She is the second member of the Rescue Corps found in the tutorial, being found holding onto a pole in the Burrow of Beginnings surrounded by 3 Bulborb Larvae; defeating the Bulborb Larvae will let Shepherd come down from the pole to join the player character and Collin. In the Rescue Command Post, talking to Shepherd lets the player train Oatchi to unlock new abilities, utilizing Pup Drive.

Personality and appearance

Shepherd has a pear-shaped head, long ears, dark skin, and blonde hair styled in a bun with a long curl on the side. She also wears a bandana that matches her spacesuit and has blue grease paint under her eyes.

Shepherd takes a lot of interest in dogs, which makes sense as she is the one who trained Oatchi. Funnily enough, when Olimar starts to talk about his dog with Shepard, she gets very excited going on about about how loyal and kind these creatures are.

Through she has a love for animals Shepard has a contrasting view on pikmin at first. During the beginning of Pikmin 4, she hide herself upon a pole as the captain is deathly frightened of the pikmin. This is quite a distinction from the previous captains of pikmin: Olimar and Charlie. The blond is also the first captain to not be playable in the main story. She is only a chose-able character in the Dandori battle Co-op mode.

Later in the game, she seems to warm up to the pikmin. Even showing sorrow if your pikmin end up dying.

Shepard seems to be very straight- forward and commanding. Her perspective seems to be very surface level, to illustrate when the rescues corps find the antagonist, Shepard never questions why this person would do such a thing. Shepard straight up keeps convincing the player to “catch them!”

Her impulsivity and anxiety can hinder her role as a captain. Her apprehensive headstrong persona is a contrast to the humble tranquil Collins. For example, when the pikmin start to play with oatchi after the tutorial, Shepard hides behind Collin in fear. The communications operator assures Shepard that the pikmin are harmless. In addition, Collin actually questions while showing empathy for the antagonist and their reasons, unlike Shepard’s more “blind” take on them.

Collin and Shepard are both responsible in helping the player character in their mission. You will see their dialogue boxes the most in the day explorations. Shepard Is the only helping character that playfully taunts the player.
