Pikmin 3 is the upcomming third installment in the Pikmin franchise, revealed during the Nintendo press conference at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo on June 5th. It will be released on the Nintendo Wii U console.[1]

Plot

From what has been seen so far at E3[2], the game revolves around 4 entirely-new characters exploring the depths of the Pikmin planet. Olimar and presumably Louie are notably missing as well.[3]

The absence of the two main characters from Pikmin 2 so far could be because only the challange mode was shown, which they are not a part of. In the knowledge that no footage of the story mode was shown could mean the two could be the protagonists again.

In a recent interveiw, Miyamoto was asked to tell exactly how the game would work. He then compared Pikmin 1 and 2, saying that Pikmin 1 was more about strategy and the folloring of a strict time limit, which allowed less time to explore, while Pikmin 2 was all about exploration and using the Pikmin in different ways.

Miyamoto went on to say that Pikmin 3 would be a combination of both, presumably having strict rules and the need for careful, strategic planning, while aslo being able to explore and use many new Pikmin and their abilities in fun, new ways.

It can be assumed that Pikmin 3 may have a time limit like the first game did, but also periods in which time is not a problem. Miyamoto then confirmed this in a later interveiw on the same day.[4]

Gameplay

Pikmin 3 will play in a similar fashion to previous installments. However, the Pikmin themselves will be able to preform a multitude of different tasks. There are new hazards such as ice and magma-based enemies. Olimar is, for a reason Miyamoto wants to stay secret, not a playable character. Instead, a pink-haired girl, a bald general, a small blue haired boy and a tall, green-haired man are the playable characters. [5]

Pikmin will break walls differently based one where they attack walls, and the various other new tasks can be performed, such as picking up fruit and anything else used for nourishment.

The captains will be able to throw other captains and appear to be able to play with eachother in the main story mode.

The controls and battle mechanics will be much more detailed. For example, the players can use the Wii controls, and shake the wii remote to throw Pikmin, and shake the nunchuck to charge. Also, the Pikmin will be able to do more damage depend on where they hit a specific monster. The Wiimotion Plus is required for Wii controls. The players will be able to use the Wii U gamepad to scroll completely out of the map during play.

There will be many new game modes, including multiplayer, singleplayer, and a new type of Challenge Mode.

In the E3 demo, many critics took note of the fact that the "swarm" feature appeared to be absent from the Wii remote and nunchuck control scheme. It appears to be replaced by an entirely new ability; The captains can now quickly roll side-to-side, and any Pikmin following them will do the same. This can become incredibly handy for moving out the way of quick-moving enemies. It is most likely, however, that the swarm feature was simply not implemented at the time [6]

The game was confirmed to have an additional Multi-player gaming mode. It will not, however, have the online multi-player capabilities other Wii U games have displayed, due to complications from having so many Pikmin on the screen at once. [7]

New Pikmin

So far, 2 new Pikmin types are available:

According to a woman at the E3 showfloor, there will be additional Pikmin that will be discussed about at a later date. [8]

Miyamoto was questioned in a recent interveiw about the absence of the Pikmin from Pikmin 2, particularilly, the White Pikmin.

He jokingly stated "They're in there...they're just hidden."[9]
