Oatchi (オッチン?) is a Rescue Pup, a type of space dog that assists the Rescue Corps. In-game, he is the companion of the player's character, assisting them with transportation, by working like a Pikmin, by performing specialized tasks, and by serving as a secondary leader if the two are separated. He has long served the Shepherd family and he was obeying only Shepherd, the captain of the Rescue Corps, until the protagonist appeared. Like his owner Shepherd, he is from the planet Giya.

Gameplay

Squad member

Normally, Oatchi is a part of the player's squad, just like a Pikmin. In the same way the player can throw or charge a Pikmin towards a task, they can point Oatchi to one. Like a Pikmin or leader, Oatchi can become idle, and he will do some nearby tasks on his own, like taking down Pellet Posies, but won't do others like carrying.

Solo

If the player's character and Oatchi get separated, be it incidentally, by being ordered to do something, by dismissing, or by choosing to switch control between the two, then Oatchi will be able to act independently, and even be controlled like one would control a leader.

While separated, Oatchi is able to walk around the area freely like a leader, and even jump. These actions can both be done by the player while controlling him, or be done automatically with Go Here! When Pikmin are in Oatchi's squad, they jump on his hips. During manual control, he can whistle and throw Pikmin or items, the former being done by what is called "bark" in-game, and the latter being done by Oatchi biting the thing in question and flinging it.

If the player's character whistles Oatchi in this state, he will return to being a part of the squad. If Oatchi whistles the leader instead, they will hop on Oatchi's back to ride them.

Riding

When Oatchi is nearby, the player's character and their Pikmin can ride on his back and hips. They can also dismount if riding. While riding Oatchi, the player takes control of both him and the player character at once – they walk around as Oatchi and can jump, rush, and swim, while throwing and whistling is done from the riding leader.

Vulnerability

Oatchi is a character alongside the player's character. Both of them have their independent health, and can be knocked down if that health reaches zero. If Oatchi comes into contact with a hazard, he will be affected in a similar way to Pikmin if he is not currently immune to them. For instance, if Oatchi gets hurt by fire, he'll run around in a panic with his tail ablaze, and the player's character will have to whistle him in order to save him, with his health dropping throughout.

Some of the upgrades available at the lab can be applied to Oatchi as well, though they must be bought with raw material separately from the leader's version of the upgrade. Oatchi's version costs twice the amount.

Skills

The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 4.
Particularly: Document the training cost for each level.

Buff

Oatchi is capable of carrying things by biting them and dragging them. This way, Oatchi is capable of carrying things solo as well as alongside Pikmin. In addition, Oatchi can also push obstacles like paper bags. He can do these things when ordered by the player's character like a Pikmin, or if being controlled by the player, when the player approaches the task and presses the A Button on the Switch. He will keep at it until the player cancels with the B Button on the Switch.

Buff is a skill he can learn to increase his strength. The higher it is, the more Pikmin he counts for when carrying or pushing.

  • Buff level 1: Strength of 3 Pikmin. This is the level Oatchi starts at.
  • Buff level 2: Strength of 5 Pikmin. It costs 1 Pup Drive.
  • Buff level 3: Strength of 10 Pikmin. It costs 1 Pup Drive.

Super Buff

Super Buff is a skill that becomes available after Buff has reached level 3. It works like Buff but with bigger increments.

  • Super Buff level 1: Strength of 20 Pikmin. It costs 2 Pup Drive.
  • Super Buff level 2: Strength of 30 Pikmin.
  • Super Buff level 3: Strength of 100 Pikmin.

Swallow

Swallow allows Oatchi to eat an object, bring it somewhere, and then spit it back out. While Oatchi is capable of doing this with small things like raw materials from the get-go, the skill taught by Shepherd involves swallowing bigger objects. For the smaller items, Oatchi can be commanded to do so by the player's character, or can be brought to one via player control, after which the player can press the A Button on the Switch to start the carrying process. Much like the Pikmin, Oatchi will start walking automatically towards the destination and if applicable, will walk back to the pile on his own. This process can be cancelled if Oatchi is whistled or if the player takes manual control and presses the B Button on the Switch.

Chomp

Chomp is Oatchi's main method of attack. When commanded by the player's character, he will run at an enemy and attack them by biting. When controlling him (and without having Pikmin), chomp can be used with the A Button on the Switch like how one would punch with a leader. If Oatchi is idling near a target or is attacked by an enemy, he will automatically use chomp whether he is commanded or not.

  • Chomp level 1: Oatchi attacks with a weak chomp able to defeat a Bulborb Larva in one hit. This is the level Oatchi starts at.
  • Chomp level 2: Oatchi attacks with a strong chomp able to defeat a Dwarf Bulborb in one hit. This costs 2 Pup Drive.
  • Chomp level 3: Oatchi attacks with a very strong chomp able to defeat a Pellet Posy in one hit.

Big Chomp

Big Chomp is a skill that becomes available after Chomp has reached level 3. It works like Chomp but with the added ability of hopping in order to bite airborne enemies.

Rush

Rush is a skill where Oatchi rushes forward. This can be used to charge at enemies or obstacles. In the case of the latter, he can smash open pots and frozen objects, or ram into walls to shake down hard to reach items on top. It can also provide enough momentum to run against the direction of conveyor belts. When Pikmin are riding Oatchi, he can also launch the Pikmin directly onto an enemy when rushing into them.

It can be performed by holding and releasing the X Button on the Switch, be it by being ordered by the player's character or when the player is controlling Oatch directly. While the button is being held down, a ring-shaped gauge appears with Oatchi's face on it, and increases the longer the button is held for. An arrow also appears on the ground indicating where Oatchi will go. If the button is released after the gauge is full, the rush will start, but if released before that the process will be cancelled. Before releasing the button, the player can also press another face button to cancel. Once rushing, if the player is controlling Oatchi he can be slightly veered left and right. Oatchi can only rush for a few seconds before screeching to a halt on his own, or sooner if the player presses the B Button on the Switch mid-rush. After rushing, the same gauge will appear with a gray ring instead, decreasing to indicating the cooldown during which Oatchi cannot rush again.

  • Rush level 1: Oatchi takes about 3 seconds to charge up his rush. This is the level Oatchi starts at.
  • Rush level 2: Oatchi takes about 2 seconds to charge up his rush. This costs 3 Pup Drive.
  • Rush level 3: Oatchi's rush becomes more powerful, able to defeat some creatures directly.

Mega Rush

Mega Rush is a skill that becomes available after Rush has reached level 3. It works like Rush but is stronger.

Jump

By pressing the X Button on the Switch, Oatchi will perform a small jump. This is required in order to get up some small ledges that the player's character or their Pikmin cannot go over. This skill is unlocked automatically the day after Russ is rescued, costs no Pup Drive, and cannot be improved.

Dig

When sending Oatchi with the A Button on the Switch, he can dig up objects like the Pikmin, such as dirt blocking caves, buried treasure, or dirt mounds. He can also do this if the player is controlling him solo, approaches the task, and presses the A Button on the Switch, after which he can be stopped manually by pressing the B Button on the Switch. This skill is unlocked automatically through progression and costs no Pup Drive.

Doggy-Paddle

Doggy-Paddle is how Oatchi swims. While swimming, his back and hips are above the water, allowing the player's character or any Pikmin riding him to continue doing so as he crosses a body of water. He will learn to swim on day 6 of the game, though not until an area is selected, thus the ability cannot be further trained in the Rescue Command Post until day 7.

  • Doggy-Paddle level 1: Oatchi swims slowly and cannot dive.
  • Doggy-Paddle level 2: Oatchi swims faster but still cannot dive.
  • Doggy-Paddle level 3: Oatchi gains the ability to dive, allowing him to attack underwater enemies and obstacles, as well as carry objects underwater.

Pluck

Pluck allows Oatchi to pluck Pikmin sprouts. Further levels increase the speed at which he can pluck.

Heal

Heal is a skill that allows Oatchi to automatically regain his health over time.

  • Heal level 1: Oatchi is able to heal himself over time. This costs 3 Pup Drive.
  • Heal level 2: Oatchi heals faster than before.
  • Heal level 3: Oatchi heals even faster than before.

Commands

Commands are a set of tasks the player can give to Oatchi, accessible with the Y Button on the Switch (or with a mapped shortcut).

  • Pick Up a Scent: Oatchi sniffs out for any important thing.
  • Come Here: If separated from Oatchi, the player can call him to their current location.
    • When separated, Oatchi can use this command to have the player character do the same.
  • Go to Base: Oatchi will head to the current base.
    • When separated, Oatchi can use this command to have the player character do the same.
  • Gather Pikmin: Oatchi will find any stray Pikmin not performing tasks and bring them to the player's character.
    • When separated, Oatchi can use this command to have the player character do the same.
  • Castaways: Oatchi will locate any castaways nearby.
  • Treasure: Oatchi will locate any treasure nearby.
  • Onions: Oatchi will locate any Onions or Flarlic.
  • Raw Materials: Oatchi will find any raw materials nearby.
  • (Type) Pikmin: Oatchi will locate Pikmin of a certain type and bring them to the player's character.

Some commands can only be unlocked when he reaches certain levels.

  • Command level 1: Oatchi can pick up scents, specifically for castaways and treasures. This is the level Oatchi starts at.
  • Command level 2: Oatchi can use Come Here and Go to Base. This also enables Go Here! for him and the player character.
  • Command level 3: Oatchi can gather stray Pikmin and bring them back to the player's character.

When Oatchi picks up a scent, some blue smoke particles appear allowing the player to visually follow the path.

Legendary Skill

One of the tips in the loading screens indicates that there is a "Legendary skill" that can eventually be taught to Oatchi after learning every other skill. It is not known what this skill teaches him, or how many Pup Drives it costs, as very little is elaborated.

Training

The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who plays Pikmin 4.
Particularly: Document when this feature gets unlocked.

By talking to Shepherd in the Rescue Command Post as the player character, it is possible train Oatchi in order to unlock new skills or level up existing ones. This can only be done if Oatchi has enough drive to learn new tricks, indicated in-game by a point system called Pup Drive. Each skill costs a different amount of Pup Drive. Pup Drive is increased every time the player rescues a castaway.

In the training menu, the player can see how much Pup Drive is available, a list of available and known skills, and the current level of each. They are also capable of learning more about what each level does.

Some of Oatchi's skills are already a part of Oatchi's skillset from the get go, and some others are learned automatically through story progression instead of being taught by Shepherd with with Pup Drive.

Suggestions: Describe his personality.

Oatchi has golden fur, with orange spots on his back, a thin tail that ends in a white tuft, two legs in total, two floppy ears, a collar, blue eyes, and no nose. Despite his alien look, he barks like a real dog.
